Can i breast feed my DD-to-be if i'm vegan?

Recently turned to a full vegan diet and it suddenly dawned on me that it can't possibly be vegan to breast feed my baby when she is born in November? How did i not know/realise this?

OP posts:

I don't think adults would drink another person's breast milk.

I mean, I wouldn't consider it not vegan. Just ick.

Haffiana · 08/06/2018 22:36

Don't have a baby, get a potted geranium instead.

HarshingMyMellow · 08/06/2018 22:36

'Addressing the sensible folk' she says.

Never heard so much nonsense in all my life. Confused

PerfectlyDone · 08/06/2018 22:37

Actually, no, apologies, I have NOT solved your problem, OP.

Your problem is that you are seeking justification to NOT breastfed because it makes you feel like a 'caged animal'.
How that makes dried cow's milk, from you know cows, the better vegan choice, I really don't know. As a non-vegan who has fed her babies in all sorts of ways, maybe I wouldn't.

Anyway, best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

You'd be surprised. It was a health craze not so long ago Shock

MyOtherUsernameisaPun · 08/06/2018 22:38

OP I think you need to settle down. The reason vegans are opposed to the consumption of dairy products is that animals can't consent to us taking their milk. We are therefore inflicting something upon them that they can't consent to, to benefit us.

You are a human with free will - so you can consent to provide milk to your child. There isn't any moral implication here because you're not forcing a decision upon another living thing unable to consent.

If you don't want to breastfeed because the thought makes you uncomfortable then that's okay. You don't have to. But your baby will need fed and if he or she isn't having your milk he or she will be having cow's milk in formula. It's up to you to decide what you're happy with - there's no wrong decision. Fed is best, whether by breast or formula.

DangerMouse17 · 08/06/2018 22:38

I'm amazed you've survived this long on the planet OP, let alone knew how to get pregnant.

Brains is seriously lacking.

HarshingMyMellow · 08/06/2018 22:39

Come on, OP.

It's basic vegan culture knowing that vegan babies don't breastfeed.
They absorb nutrients via osmosis. Just like plants!

Namethatchange · 08/06/2018 22:39

Good luck finding a non animal based baby formula, the soya version has fish oil etc in as does the hypoallergenic amino acid based formulas which are prescription only or prohibitively expensive.

Jesus Christ is all I can come up with!

Suprisingly yes some would! Shock

3 posts by the OP and the thread's going like a rocket. That's very well done.

Sheep, your reasoning seems a bit non-linear. First of all you linked to one tragic case as evidence vegan mothers couldn't breastfeed, and now you're telling us about a study about macrobiotic diets?

That said, I agree that the OP doesn't sound up to the job of designing a vegan diet for a toddler.

Strokethefurrywall · 08/06/2018 22:46

Please don't give vegans a bad name 😩 and... Not sure how eating rotting animal corpse or secretions is still viewed as superior... in the same post.

How ironic seeing as your second comment is exactly what gives Vegans a bad name... Hmm

TammySwansonTwo · 08/06/2018 22:46

My advice: if you’re concerned about bfing not being vegan, definitely don’t use a breast pump.

redshoeblueshoe · 08/06/2018 22:47

nauticant yes that is truly excellent Grin

Absofrigginlootly · 08/06/2018 22:48

This has got to be a wind up.

I was vegan for over a decade (Incidentally I starting eating dairy and eggs again when TTC and white meat and fish during pregnancy and BF because I personally needed the extra protein for various reasons do I would not bring my DD up to be vegan - I don’t think it’s right for me personally to make that decision for her)....

Anyway, anyone who has done even the most basic research or given even a minutes thought to being vegan knows that the rational behind veganism is firstly not wanting to be part of animal torture and exploitation, along with possible health concerns and all the environmental concerns associated with commercial animal farming.

BF is quite literally the most ethical and natural and environmentally friendly “product” there is. I don’t understand what your thought process could possibly be here?? Confused

AnnieAnoniMouser · 08/06/2018 22:49

Honest to god...just when you think you’ve heard it all.

gillybeanz · 08/06/2018 22:49

I know - I need to go to sleep but I am enjoying this thread too much.

redshoeblueshoe · 08/06/2018 22:49

Can I just ask - what the fuck did you think you would feed your baby ?

LighthouseSouth · 08/06/2018 22:50

"This has got to be a wind up"

yes, I think the OP probably posted as yet another way to have a go at vegans. I'm not vegan btw, just can't help noticing it.

the only other time I saw a post, or set of posts, with this level of crazy - the poster said the next day she was drunk! Grin

NoParticularPattern · 08/06/2018 22:50

What I want the know is exactly what the OP is going to do about feeding her baby if the general consensus were to be that breastfeeding isn’t vegan?! Clearly traditional formula milk is out as it contains cows milk, the soya ones contain fish products I believe (oil? Maybe?) and the ones which could legitimately be classed as vegan are either only available on prescription or would cost the GDP of a small country to raise a child on.

Anyway the way I see it is that vegans do not consume or use unnecessary animal products. Since fully grown adults can live on fruit and veg alone then that obviously isn’t a problem. However infants can not survive on fruit and veg- their digestive system is designed to absorb nutrients in liquid form from breast milk. Even if you could somehow find that breast milk is not vegan, it doesn’t take away from the fact that a baby NEEDS that milk to survive. They cannot survive on anything which isn’t breast milk (or a breast milk replacement I.e. formula). A baby can not survive on an adult vegan diet. It’s the same as the fact that it is dangerous and harmful to feed cats a vegan diet. They cannot survive.
