Pregnant and just sold the convertible!

sirmione16 · 08/06/2018 17:13

We found out we're pregnant (yay!) and as many say, it's time for sacrifices now! so obviously my convertible Audi has had to go in place for a sensible (but still nice) car and I can't help feeling rather sad!! I'd waited a long time to get a soft top, saved up a lot and it genuinely is my dream car! Which I'm now waving bye to! Has anyone else had to make sacrifices that were bittersweet when having children?

(Disclaimer: I know it's for the child, I don't regret selling it and I'm over the moon to be pregnant so no criticism here please! Just wondering if anyone else had a similar experience with an item/lifestyle)

I must be a really bad parent. I kept the soft top.....

pigsDOfly · 08/06/2018 17:18

Oh yes, I had a lovely little sporty job when I got pregnant with my first child just short of 40 years ago.

It had to go and be replaced with something more sensible, but I really missed that car and still have fond memories of it.

It would be a classic car now so should probably have hung to it.

No criticism from me, I know exactly where you're coming from.

TroubledLichen · 08/06/2018 17:19

This was exactly me last year!

I actually kind of regret it, we won’t be having another baby any time soon (childcare is very expensive where we live, a second would mean me becoming a SAHM which is something I don’t want to do) and DD is now 1 and loves riding in her seat on DH’s bike so I think she’d probably enjoy the wind in her hair. And I ditched the big pram for a tiny stroller very quickly so no boot space issues... Oh well, the SUV we bought instead is no doubt safer 😢

PineapplePrincess · 08/06/2018 17:25

I’m in the polar opposite position. Was pregnant, lost baby and now buying a convertible.

Was always planning to switch cars to sensible family car suitable for prams, buggies and bikes. But now car shopping is depressing looking at sensible cars - going for the frivolous option in a lame attempt to cheer myself up.

My point being focus on the positive not the negatives in the situation. Life’s too short otherwise.

Congratulations on your pregnancy, btw.

DeepFatFriar · 08/06/2018 17:28

I wouldn't have got rid of it.

Also "we're" pregnant?! /shudder

Abouttoblow · 08/06/2018 17:29

I kept my convertible Confused

TheSconeOfStone · 08/06/2018 17:29

We kept our convertible until baby two was born. Sold it and bought a type 25 VW van. We’re not sensible people though.

Bloody miss my convertible 😢

sirmione16 · 08/06/2018 17:29

@Ethelswith I fought hard to keep it against my OH! Lol

@PineapplePrincess sorry to hear of your loss, but I agree that life is too short and you must be a little frivolous now and then! Even if it's only for a windswept country driving summer!!

OP posts:
sirmione16 · 08/06/2018 17:31

@DeepFatFriar lol well it was a joint effort Wink

And I think the main issue is that is was a 3 door, and coupe (obviously) so not room to easily manoeuvre a car seat/baby in and out at all. Was a nightmare practising with my niece (this was me trying to prove to OH it was fine. It wasnt.) Grin

Candyflip · 08/06/2018 17:33

yes, my career. I wanted to be at home with the children when they were small, but it does take a while to rebuild your career after. Why did you have to get rid of the car? Is it multiples?

sirmione16 · 08/06/2018 17:36

@Candyflip was practically impossible to get a car seat in, and far too difficult to lift a baby in and out of :( as I pp, we attempted with my niece and her seat. Too hard.

OP posts:
sirmione16 · 08/06/2018 17:38

@Candyflip PS I hope it's not multiples! I'm bricking it about having one!! ConfusedGrinGrin

Why do you have to sell a convertible car once you’re pregnant? Confused

TheSconeOfStone · 08/06/2018 17:39

It might have taken two of you but only one is pregnant.

OyO · 08/06/2018 17:40

Sad I thought it’d be the poster whose husband spent thousands on her DS’s clothes.

lovemyhorsesxo · 08/06/2018 17:42

How far along are you op

ThatEscalatedQuickly · 08/06/2018 17:43

'We are having a baby' but 'I am pregnant'. Please no 'we are pregnant' I always think of that phrase as very American and not reflective of who is making the major effort to bring the baby into the world!

No harm to move to a more practical car but you probably could have held on it for another while.

blaaake · 08/06/2018 17:45

Yes, but I had to get rid of a sensible car to get another! My BELOVED Porsche Cayenne had to go when I got pregnant with DC4 and I needed a seven seater, so got a Volvo XC90 thingy Sad. Found the Volvo boring tho and ended up in an Audi sq7 Confused

TroubledLichen · 08/06/2018 17:47

walnutwood, I sold mine because:

The boot wasn’t big enough for a big travel system pram. We replaced the beastly pram with a tiny babyzen yoyo after a couple of months.

It was difficult to get the baby seat in/out. I easily could have coped, the car seat travel system days are so short as tiny babies shouldn’t be in their seat for too long and bigger ones are too heavy to lift.

Thought we wouldn’t put the roof down with a baby. Now she’s 1 it would be fine as long as it wasn’t too hot and maybe not for motorway driving which we rarely do anyway as we live in a city.

If I had my time over I’d keep the convertible.

sirmione16 · 08/06/2018 17:47

@OyO your husband spent thousands?! How?! On what?!

OP posts:
frasier · 08/06/2018 17:49

DH not only kept the soft top, he bought another two seater when DS was one 🤔.

His reasoning was he wouldn’t be able to have those sorts of cars when we had a family... but we HAD a family! He procrastinated for ten years while we were ttc and then jumped when DS was born 😲

sirmione16 · 08/06/2018 17:50

It's sensible to sell it now as more people are looking for a convertible in summer than winter so it sold quickly and easily. Plus come winter I'll be heavily pregnant and th stress of selling a car, and Christmas, and a baby is not what I need! GrinI've posted twice about why it wasn't suitable, and another poster has stated their opinion and why they sold there's for similar reasons.

OP posts:
sirmione16 · 08/06/2018 17:52

@TroubledLichen interesting post! Gives me hope that maybe I'll get one again before the child is 18... (screenshots post as evidence to persuade OH)

MyKingdomForBrie · 08/06/2018 17:53

We sold ours because we needed two cars we could fit all of us in, just in case! Also means I can pick up friends when I have dd with me etc..

Was a very sad moment though!

user1471426142 · 08/06/2018 17:55

We got rid of ours for an SUV. The amount of shit you end up having to cart everywhere just means you need a big boot really. My husband wanted to keep it as he reckoned we’d managed until we had a second. I don’t think the next stage car seat would have fit in the car if we had kept it.
