To not believe my friend about DDs GCSE's...

adhominemhaterr · 08/06/2018 16:44

My friends daughter sat her first two maths GCSE papers (one last month and one yesterday).
After the first exam, she texted me asking about my daughters maths exam, she's claiming her DD was given an AQA paper when the school they're at only offers edexcel.
She also says her DD was given lots of questions based on topics she hadn't studied for.
Is there any way her DD could've been given an AQA paper by mistake? Surely this would have been noticed?
My DD definitely did an Edexcel paper, not AQA....

I can't help but think she is lying about this. Why would the school order one AQA paper by mistake when the exam boards are completely separate!?
She is now writing a complaint!

@adhominemhaterr
And don't forget how they deliberately didn't teach her things when she wasn't there.

Noodledoodledoo · 08/06/2018 17:59

Bekabeech - AQA GCSE Maths was sat yesterday this week and the Thursday before half term - I know as I got the paper last night as I am marking it so started my training.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 08/06/2018 18:00

I work as admin in a school, DH is SLT.

He confirms what most have said above about the way students are told to check their papers. Students have to write their own name and candidate number on the paper, they are not prenamed.

There’s no way an AQA paper snuck in with edexcel. They come from completely different places - and in my school they use a different delivery company too! The way exam papers are sent out, received and stored in school is unbelievably strict. There’s very little room for error.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 08/06/2018 20:27

Papers do come from the board in sealed envelopes. We can't open them except in the exam room. We then separate out any for special arrangement students

Bambamber · 08/06/2018 20:34

But surely it won't exactly be difficult for the appropriate people to confirm whether or not there was a mistake?

I would imagine if she does write a complaint, all they have to do is look at the exam paper to ensure she sat the right one

Anasnake · 08/06/2018 20:38

She won't complain, she's thinking of excuses for her dd doing shit.

ReservoirDogs · 08/06/2018 20:39

The only ever papers at gcse that are prenamed and numbered are the answer sheets for any papers thatvare multiple choice.

MyNewAlias · 08/06/2018 20:45

Invigilator here, AQA maths was definitely yesterday and Thursday 24th May. Paper 3 next Tuesday.

Ellapaella · 08/06/2018 21:07

AQA was sat yesterday. My son did it.

BoneyBackJefferson · 08/06/2018 21:12

I don't know how true the names already on papers is but from the pupils that have come and seen me they have said that their name and candidate number was on the paper already.

Although it is possible that our exams office may have printed out stickers for various students that have tricky parents.

raisedbyguineapigs · 08/06/2018 21:25

If her name was printed on the exam paper, how can it have been for the wrong board? They would have to have deliberately entered her for an exam, the only child in the school to do a different board at a cost to them, taught her the wrong spec, ignored all the single entries that came in for a completely different exam board from a completely different place (both the examinations officer and the maths teacher) ignored the one exam paper that was sent to them and then let her sit the paper. After all these cock ups by the school, she then hasn't noticed!

BoneyBackJefferson · 08/06/2018 21:28

IMO

I am with the posters that she is trying it on because she thinks that she has done badly and wants to be able to blame the school.

Examseason · 08/06/2018 21:29

All maths papers are at the same time for all boards

SadieContrary · 08/06/2018 21:34

As an Exams Officer I'm inclined to say this is very unlikely. Edexcel and AQA are two boards that our school uses and the front cover is very different. Let's say the EO missed it, the invigilator(s) wouldn't miss it also.
Lastly, when packing scripts up to send for marking, you have to include the official register sent by the board - that lists student by name and candidate number. So an EO will cross refer the papers they have against those listed on the register so ensure they're all there. In the instance you describe, it would be noted at that stage that they had a paper for a student that wasn't entered for the subject.
As a previous poster has said, I think the student is trying to cover for some bad results

MrsCD67 · 08/06/2018 21:36

At the start of every exam, they ask students to check that what is written on the front of the paper is correct. So, all students have the correct papers and if they don't, they have more than enough of an opportunity to call over an invigilator

BoneyBackJefferson · 08/06/2018 21:49

Just another thought on this, we sit the pupils in the groups for each of the papers.

So aqa Higher sit together.
aqa foundation sit together
etc.

So its unlikely that a higher paper or a paper from a different exam board would end up with the wrong pupil.

Furrycushion · 08/06/2018 21:50

Well, it will be easy enough to get a copy of the paper at a later date

Tunnocks34 · 08/06/2018 21:52

Again, extremely unlikely.

Also, AQA tends to be the slightly easier board anyway (for math) which makes her point moot.

NewYearNewMe18 · 08/06/2018 21:53

My DD definitely did an Edexcel paper, not AQA....

Edexcel changed to Pearson a while back, 4 maybe 5 years

Forums like thestudentroom will be full of the papers by now.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 08/06/2018 22:10

They were bought by Pearson weren’t they? And are Pearson Edexcel, usually shortened to Edexcel, including by themselves.

AlexanderHamilton · 08/06/2018 22:10

Well dd besrly didn’t end up with a maths paper at all, twice!

Ok - slight over exaggeration. At her school they sit in groups. Foundation candidates, then higher, then access candidates (laptop etc). Dd is the only access candidate in her school doing Higher Tier & the invigilator missed putting her paper out, twice. Possibly due to the fact that she doesn’t use a laptop for maths but the seating stays the same.

But she just stuck her hand up & told the invigilator & it was all sorted.

WhaleofaThyme · 08/06/2018 22:16

I don't think it really has anything to do with you, and am unsure why you are sharing it with mumsnet. Regardless of whether it's a lie, or it's happened, it's a truly awful situation.

Coming to have a bitch about it on a public forum doesn't put you across as a very nice friend at all.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 08/06/2018 22:18

Exactly, Alexander. apart from the huge number of very weird things that would have to happen in order for a school that only uses Edexcel for maths to end up with a single AQA paper, she clearly noticed she had the wrong paper so she could have sorted it then.

FreeMantle · 08/06/2018 22:35

Whale why are you on AIBU? The clues in the name. People give a senario, which by its very nature ,will likely involve other people.
