Hey everyone. Iv had the mirena insert the 28th of March and I have been bleeding eveyday sense getting it insert no break at all.. sometimes heavy other days lighter.. the whole reason I got it insert was to stop heavy periods but now im bleeding constantly 😕 has this ever happened anyone? Does it stop or should I get it taken out..Thanks everyone in advance for your replies

I bled for 3 months on and off and then it stopped and I had no periods at all for 10 years. Stick with it I reckon. Although lots will have horrible stories about the Mirena, I thought it was fab once the bleeding stopped.

Cazz10 · 08/06/2018 13:10

Right now it seems like it will never stop but after hearing your story im feeling hopefull x

Think you need medical advice here. I would contact whoever had it put in for you, be checking bloods for anemia.

Miloarmadillo2 · 08/06/2018 13:22

I had mine 8 miserable months and bled on and off the whole time (and was miserable as sin) I kept being told it would settle, was offered hormone tablets to stop the bleeding ( the whole point was not to be on systemic hormones). It didn't stop until I insisted on having it removed. I think it is worthwhile persevering to see if you are one of the people where it will settle, but put some sort of time limit on that. HCPS are not keen to remove them because they expect it to last 5 yrs and not have to supply contraception in the meantime.

Mousefunky · 08/06/2018 13:24

I had the implant and same issue. Kudos to you for sticking it out so long, it made me realise why the implant is the most effective contraception when I had it- you don’t want to have bloody sex! Bled none stop and was already anemic before getting it, I had mine taken out after about six weeks. Biggest relief of my life.

rogueone · 08/06/2018 13:25

Go and get it checked and ensure it’s fitted properly.

MyGuideJools · 08/06/2018 13:26

I bled a lot for 3 months, then lighter for another 3 months then absolutely nothing since (had it in 3 years now) I'm glad I stuck with it.

Caribou58 · 08/06/2018 13:26

I bled for about 3 weeks and then settled to much lighter periods (unlike many women, mine did continue) and markedly less pain for the next 6 years - until I had it removed and hit menopause soon after.

Cazz10 · 08/06/2018 14:23

Iv already had a vaginal scan in the hospital and they said its were it should be..but they also want me to stick it out as there not keen on taking them out so soon.. they reckon it stops in some women after a few months but hopefully it does stop because dont wanna to go through all this and still having to get it out anyways

I hated the mirena, I got thrush every 4 weeks and got it whipped out!

DanielCraigsUnderpants · 08/06/2018 19:09

I wanted mirena to work for me. I really did. But I had regular bleeding the whole way through and also got thrush and recurring BV. I had it removed and went back on the pill

Cazz10 · 08/06/2018 19:20

The bledding is very annoying and im really getting sick of it at this stage just wish it would stop.. if I knew it would stop eventually then I would be ok with it I'd stick it out .. here's hoping that it will stop eventually Confused

It's normal and usually settles after 6 months. Speak to your GP if it's particularly problematic.

Pannacott · 08/06/2018 19:59

I think I had very light but pretty much continuous bleeding for six months. It was really annoying. But then I had no periods, not ovulating, no pmt for years. It was worth it.

Debfronut · 08/06/2018 20:02

Had bleeding for 6 months gradually reducing. Now been free for 11 years on my third and probably last. Love the Mirena as had horrendous heavy periods. My GP told me the worse your periods were the longer it takes to work not sure if thats true

washewihersen · 08/06/2018 20:11

I had light bleeding for about 6 months then very light but erratic periods from then on. It was really tedious initially and I nearly asked to have it taken out but so glad I stuck with it in the end. It's restored my sanity. My periods were very heavy before. Much as I hated the insertion I will definitely have another one when this runs out.

Cazz10 · 08/06/2018 22:49

Thanks so much for your replies there making me feel really hopeful so might just stick it out to see how it turns out.. really hoping it does stop has my periods were very heavy that I even ended up in hospital for two days in january so be delighted if this does finally settle

Oh Cazza I feel for you. I am waiting on getting a mirena fitted for heavy periods. I have heavy periods and didn't stop bleeding from beginning of December until beginning of April, so understand how draining it is.

I would speak to your GP and make sure you get tested for anaemia. By the time I got tested for anaemia I had to be rushed in for a blood transfusion. Hope you get it sorted.

TheDarkPassenger · 01/08/2018 22:05

Strange that this is on here because today I spent 5 hours in hospital barely conscious from blood loss due to the copper coil. I’ve been given the go ahead to get it removed and I cannot fucking wait I’m considering trying to take it out myself.

I know it’s not the Mirena it’s slightly different but my body is rejecting this horrifically I’ve had it 2 months and I’ve non stop bled and sometimes it’s like a waterfall. I’ve passed out twice. I feel I’ll constantly like flu. I get stabby period pains all the time. I constantly feel like my star is trying to drop out. I’ve had thrush for the first time in my entire life and it took a few goes to get it away. Today was the end, I bled so much I soaked a towel (a drying yourself towel not a san pad) and the painw as horrific! I need this gone immediately!

TheDarkPassenger · 01/08/2018 22:06

Arse** lmao not star, although that works too I guess

TheDarkPassenger · 01/08/2018 22:07

FWIW they gave me iron tablets, tranexamic acid & codeine to tide me over until my appointment at the family planning clinic. I feel truly rotten

Whatsthisbear · 01/08/2018 22:11

I had Mirena fitted due to heavy periods......bled every day for 9 months until I begged them to remove it.
Initially I was told ‘it can take a few months to settle down’ then it was ‘some women take up to 6 months to settle down’ then ‘just leave it a few weeks longer’...... awful, awful thing. Was glad to get it out.
Whereas my sister had one fitted- no period for 5 years - it just doesn’t suit every woman.
Hope it gets better for you.

Gojira · 02/08/2018 22:10

Yes, although mine was with the implant. I bled for nine months and had the most horrendous mood swings.

My (male) doctor told me to persevere with it numerous times Hmm

In the end, I went back and said, if you don't take it out, I'll cut it out - and I really meant it!

WillowRose79 · 03/08/2018 07:42

This happened to me too- they won't take it out so soon after having it put in apparently It's ridiculous. I had mine for 3 years and it was fine, had it again and I hated it my mood swings were absolutely horrific. I got it taken out and feel so much better
