To bloody hate flight radar

I am away at the moment with friends in a house about half hour from the nearest airport. It's a huge European airport. They have all gone inside for a snooze and I am outside on a sun lounger to read my book.

Except I can't read my bloody book cos it turns out we are on the flight path and there are loads of planes passing over. I seem to have developed a bit of an obsession with wanting to know where planes are going and have come from so I can't even read more than a couple of pages without having to flick back to bloody flight radar to check. I do this at home too but the planes seem to be every hour or so there. Here it's relentless.

I have already broken off twice from this post to work out that the planes passing are from Munich and Gothenburg respectively. This enhances my life in no way at all yet I can't help myself.

It was Mumsnet who told me about Flight Radar. Who do I complain to?! Blush

If you love hate Flight Radar, do not click on this link: www.marinetraffic.com/en/ais/home/centerx:154.6/centery:-35.2/zoom:6 which charts all the cruise ship journeys in the world.

Last year my Australian friend went on a cruise - I was happily following its course one day when it disappeared off the screen. I was frantic and nearly had a heart attack thinking it had sunk, couldn't imagine what the hell had happened. Fortunately it reappeared half an hour later with no explanation.

Enjoy Grin

So since we live in the arse end of absolutely nowhere we have zero flights which cross us pretty much ever. I am however most interested in the lightning/weather/constellations one’s if anyone has a link.

Because I 100% need something to do during night feeds that doesn’t involve spending money on baby clothes Blush

woodpigeons · 07/06/2018 21:46

If you set Flightradarmup for alerts you can see planes diverting for emergencies.
7700 means general emergency, 7600 lost radio contact.
There’s one for hijack but they don’t show it.
Stanstead is the London airport for serious emergencies and hijacks, or so I was told.
I saw a plane diverted there but never heard anything about it.
Long haul flights often have to fly around in circles to dump fuel, usually over the sea.
I don’t think it’s ever anything dangerous. Most likely a drunken passenger on easyJet., but interesting.

I was following DH on flight radar. He landed at Heathrow and his plane went off the end of the runway and halfway across a field Shock I knew this was probably because the signal and the satellite map were not aligned. But it was hard.

Omg I’m now addicted to geoguesser

I was tracking DS on his way back from NZ last Christmas - then his plane suddenly disappeared as it crossed the Indian Ocean. Bit of a panic until we checked online to find it had made an unscheduled stop in Sri Lanka due to bad weather at the end destination Dubai. Took a while but eventually it reappeared on the app.
But it was really useful that we could then track his rescheduled connecting flight and time our pick up to arrive just as his plane landed.

Kizzibel · 07/06/2018 22:32

I became addicted to flight radar last year when I had a long haul flight with a short connection in SE Asia which was causing anxiety as there were only 2 flights a day that I could connect onto.

I spent the preceding 3 weeks prior to my departure date checking every day whether the flight left heathrow on time and what time it landed, turns out that although it left a few mins late each day it always landed early except for one day where it left very late.

I have never seen a sqawking flight though, this is a game changer!

NincompoopsShadow · 07/06/2018 22:41

I watch the international space station live, great when it's docking and means on a clear night I can try to spot it when it's zooming within sight. When it isn't, that's when flight radar comes out!!

IndigoApple · 07/06/2018 22:44

Another Flight radar geek here! DD and DH think I'm really odd. We're close to the flight path and I pass right under it on the way to work. At the moment planes are flying back towards the airport for some reason (usually the opposite direction) which for some reason is even more exciting! Grin

Martinimonster · 07/06/2018 22:47

Just went and had a look. I've been hooked all damn night

Me too!! Goddamn this thread Grin
Just spent the past hour pootling down random fields in Arizona etc trying to guess where I am.
As if I didnt' spend enough time googling shite and procastinating on t'interweb lol

MizCracker · 07/06/2018 22:51

I'm obsessed with FR24 and would love nothing more than to visit an airport for plane spotting purposes only.

I remember being awake around 4am with newborn DS and listening out for the first Heathrow arrival of the day. Turns out that the Singapore flights get in ridiculously early. Can't be nice for the locals having an A380 thundering over them at that time in the morning, but I enjoyed hearing them at 10,000 ft over Essex Grin

Longdistance · 07/06/2018 22:56

Flight Radar 24 rocks 🤟🏻

I live near an airport, and can hear them landing in. Sometimes they overshoot the runway, and have to take off again and redo the approach.

witchofzog · 08/06/2018 17:12

Well I am now ALSO addicted to Geoguessr too as is one of my friends. You bastards. You were supposed to all call me unreasonable Grin Grin

@TressiliansStone it's tomorrow (Saturday), I have no idea why I typed Sunday. They're due to fly over the palace at 1 so I'll be watching Brize departures from 12 😀

MissMiserable · 08/06/2018 23:16

I couldn't work out why one plane wasn't moving. Then I realised it was parked up at the airport Grin

TressiliansStone · 08/06/2018 23:33

I've now found the Battle of Britain Flight display schedule, thanks to you madvixen.

www.military-airshows.co.uk/press18/bbmfschedule2018.htm

They'll be everywhere from Newcastle to Torbay this year. Gotta catch one or another!

MrsApplepants · 08/06/2018 23:48

I don’t get this. Why is it fun? Seems like an enormous waste of time. Can someone explain what’s interesting about this?

welcomething · 08/06/2018 23:50

You should change your name to

Mrsgrumpyjudgyunecessarycommentypants

Some people enjoy it. So what?

Panda81 · 09/06/2018 06:40

Has anyone paid for the upgrade on FR? Any good?

TheFairyCaravan · 09/06/2018 06:55

I love Flightradar24. DH, who is an aircraft engineer thinks I’m a bit mad.
