To bloody hate flight radar

I am away at the moment with friends in a house about half hour from the nearest airport. It's a huge European airport. They have all gone inside for a snooze and I am outside on a sun lounger to read my book.

Except I can't read my bloody book cos it turns out we are on the flight path and there are loads of planes passing over. I seem to have developed a bit of an obsession with wanting to know where planes are going and have come from so I can't even read more than a couple of pages without having to flick back to bloody flight radar to check. I do this at home too but the planes seem to be every hour or so there. Here it's relentless.

I have already broken off twice from this post to work out that the planes passing are from Munich and Gothenburg respectively. This enhances my life in no way at all yet I can't help myself.

It was Mumsnet who told me about Flight Radar. Who do I complain to?! Blush

Im aware of how nerdy that sounds. I suggest reading all comments in a Steve Urkel voice for effect.

APMom · 07/06/2018 18:33

I’m in Dublin so lots of transatlantic planes track over us, we play the game of what plane it is, altitude and where it’s going and then check Flightradar24. I also use marine traffic, love it for tracking the boat to France. I use blitzortung.org for lightning and windyty for weather, air pressure, wave height etc. they’re all great especially when you’re tracking family going abroad. Skies quiet here at the min.

SpartacusJnr · 07/06/2018 18:46

I bloody love Geoguessr but had forgotten about it dammit.

Flight radar I like. No major flight path near us, but there is a wee local airport and a couple of gliders parked up :D

SofieMonde · 07/06/2018 18:47

I remember there is also a car app. Can't remember what it was exactly, maybe car share? but you can see where people are exactly on the roads...maybe someone else knows the one I mean. It was a while ago I used it

UpstartCrow · 07/06/2018 18:54

This is another good one - help archaeologists locate and protect sites, using satellite images;

I think i will win the nerd alert! I even have a plane spotters book which I tick off the planes I have seen...WinkI got it for the kids really

SwedishEdith · 07/06/2018 19:51

I live under a flight path as well. Maybe I could rent our house out on Air BnB and add that as a plus point.

Just tracked an RAF one from Gander (?) in Canada to Brize Norton. I've no idea why.

NotACleverName · 07/06/2018 19:56

The place where I work is on the flight path to/from Manchester airport. I consider it a great day if I go out for my fag break and the A380 goes overhead.

I love Geo Guesser, too!

CadyHeron · 07/06/2018 19:58

Swedish - I've mentioned this on MN before, but I hear ya with this

Just tracked an RAF one from Gander (?) in Canada to Brize Norton. I've no idea why.

I track planes from their destination and to it's end and pretend I'm going on holiday with it Blush Grin
Get off in say Tokyo or whatever, google street map view, have a walk about and find yourself some restaurants and google the menu etc lol Grin
I think I've just outgeeked half the thread but I don't care as its escapism, virtual holidays are fun as you can sightsee and spend bog all money Grin

SpartacusJnr · 07/06/2018 20:19

@CadyHeron Grin

Love it!

SwedishEdith · 07/06/2018 20:24

Ha ha - love the idea of a virtual holiday.

TheGonnagle · 07/06/2018 20:33

@YesItsMeIDontCare Hello from not very far at all!

Nodancingshoes · 07/06/2018 20:46

Omg op - I thought I was the only person that does this!!!! My dh says I'm a loser! I get particularly excited if a jumbo jet goes over - we are on the transatlantic flight path to the Central America and the carribbean. I can't wait to tell dh there are loads of us that do this.... Wink

JamPasty · 07/06/2018 20:53

You bastards, you've got me hooked now!!

:)

jaimebravo · 07/06/2018 20:55

Wow this is a great thread.
I am in the West of Ireland so the transatlantic flights are always coming and going over us, I love the AR view feature on Flightradar24 to see all the different flights, especially in the morning when there are loads of flights.

Northernmum100 · 07/06/2018 20:56

Dh and I are avid flight radar fans much to the horror of our kids (we are on a flight path to one of the UK airports so plenty to see)
Just told him about the shipping one and he has gone very quiet and staring intently at his ipad.....

megletthesecond · 07/06/2018 20:58

My name is Meglet and I bloody love Flight Radar and Lightning Maps.

I always try and figure out which oligarch or A-lister is flying into Farnborough on their private jets.

PaintedHorizons · 07/06/2018 21:00

Me too. Got it from MN sometime last year, (or even the year before - don't remember). Live under the LHR flightpath and was very much an airline person, (Dad, Mum, Me, Brother, Husband, Mil, SiL and many friends - all worked for BEA/BOAC/BA/ SAS and EzyJet!!!)

Summer afternoons or early mornings when it is just me awake I'm tracking the first planes in. Love it!

Proseccoagain · 07/06/2018 21:00

Ooh, I love flightradar! Before we flew to Canada last year I tracked our flight just to see how long it actually took and where it went. It was amazing. Took off about 1pm, landed in Calgary about 10pm. Seemed an age. Loved the flight when we actually flew. Was on the bus this afternoon when I found this thread and had to go on flight radar straight away, had forgotten all about it. When DDIL took DGDs to Sweden a few years back just had to track the flight to make sure they got there ok. We're under a busy flightpath, luckily for me.

PaintedHorizons · 07/06/2018 21:03

CadyHeron - I do this!! (But had never thought to link up the flights and the streetmap -. Genius!!)

Was "on holiday" in Spitsbergen yesterday.

LadyMisty · 07/06/2018 21:05

I've got flight radar, lightning strikes and QuakeFeed. Blush

And now you tell me there's a shipping one too???
That's my life wasted!

LadyMisty · 07/06/2018 21:08

Omg CadyHeron I think I may go off on a "holiday" tonight Grin what an amazing idea.

84CharingCrossRoad · 07/06/2018 21:10

Last summer my late DP was in the hospice at the same time as my best friends stepdad. Her stepdad used to be wheeled into the garden in his bed and DP my mum and I joined them. Friends husband used to sit by the bed telling his father in law where the planes were going. Mum couldn't understand till son in law explained. DP spent many happy hours in the hospice on FR. Mum and I use it now a lot too!

CuppaTeaAndAJammieDodger · 07/06/2018 21:12

I’ve just redownloaded the app - AND IT’S ALL YOUR FAULT!!

thenightsky · 07/06/2018 21:15

I love flight radar 24. We have a plane come over every night at 20 mins past midnight. It sounds slow and heavy and quite low. It NEVER appears on flight radar! Angry
