DS starts school in Sept and I don't know how many is best to buy. The jumpers and poloshirts are embroidered so can't just get a plain one from the supermarket. The jumpers at £9 each and the polo shirts are £7 each.

Definitely at least 2. One will often get lost and can take a few days to show up. Personally however many I thought I'd need I'd buy an extra in the size up. That way you have a spare for emergencies but you'd eventually need to buy that size anyway so it's not wasted money.

BarbarianMum · 07/06/2018 10:53

And check out egg yolk yellow kid's polo shirts on Amazon (they exist)!

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 07/06/2018 10:53

Are these dark enough yellow: www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-unisex-pure-cotton-easy-care-school-polo-shirt-pack-of-2/gold/p3170485

Also try M&S

Jemimapuddleduk · 07/06/2018 10:55

More than you could imagine. Very rarely does my reception age dd get more than 1 days wear.
We had 3 pinafores plus 2 given second hand
3 skirts
2 pairs trousers
5 polo shirts
2 jumpers and 3 cardigans
For summer
5 dresses (one binned already due to permanent marker) and 2 playsuit
3 lighter weight cardigans.
Go for the cheapest you can find (Asda is v v good) as they will get trashed.
We’ve got through 3 pairs of school shoes too.

MumofBoysx2 · 07/06/2018 10:55

I always have 5 x shirts/jumpers/trousers for each kid so that they have a clean set every day, also they wear less so look more new (only 3 x shorts though). 2 x PE kits.

cjt110 · 07/06/2018 10:56

MumofBoysx2 · 07/06/2018 10:56

Interesting that some people buy plain when the uniform is logo-ed. I haven't been brave enough to try that although I have seen one or two at our school with plain shirts, haven't had the nerve to ask if they got pulled up on it!

cjt110 · 07/06/2018 10:57

How the fuck do they do through so many shoes? DS has a few different pairs of pumps at home and they've lasted him ages?

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 07/06/2018 10:58

Yay!

Check out Trutex as well. They do school polos in 16 colours, including Sunflower, Gold and Yellow. www.trutex.com/polo-shirt

cjt110 · 07/06/2018 10:58

MumofBoysx2 Isuppose a polo shirt wouldnt matter but yes, I'm not sure if I would want him in none logo'd incase we were pulled on it.

We have the "Starting School" meeting tonight. I wonder if I dare ask,....?

5 of everything for regular uniform and 2 of all pe kit. My dc need to be changed every day, not because they get dirty but because of general school/classroom/dining hall smells. I like them to smell and look fresh - I don't wear clothes for 2 days running and I don't want them to either. I do buy bigger than they need though and so far I've managed to gets 2 years out of everything.

Jemimapuddleduk · 07/06/2018 10:59

Also you can get that deep yellow polo shirt colour from John Lewis’s or amazon (trutex or fruit of the loom).

Mol1628 · 07/06/2018 11:00

Three jumpers (with logo)
6 shirts (could get away with 5 but they come in packs of 2)
3 pairs of trousers
One pair of shorts

liz70 · 07/06/2018 11:00

For DD3 we have:
Tie
6 short sleeved blouses (no need for long as school is boiling)
2 cardigans
2 skirts
4 gingham summer dresses
About 7 or 8 pairs of the following:
Tights for winter
Grey knee socks
White ankle socks

Two logo sweatshirts
Two logo polo shirts
Two pairs of logo shorts
Dittojoggers

1 school blazer
1 autumn jacket in school colour
1 winter coat in school colour
1 rucksack in school colour
2 each of woollen hat, scarf and gloves in school colour

1 pair each of black MJ shoes and outdoor trainers
1 pair of black plimsolls for indoors

I think that's it. Phew!

Mol1628 · 07/06/2018 11:02

What I will say is don’t worry too much. I panicked when my son started school- I went a bit crazy because everything had to be just exactly right. In the end it doesn’t matter and if you realise something isn’t right or you need extra or something different you can get it any time of the term and teachers aren’t going to come down on you if you don’t have the right stuff straight away.
Start off with a few things and you can get more if you need them.

cjt110 · 07/06/2018 11:03

Any tips for a first timer? About school in general?

OP posts:
Mol1628 · 07/06/2018 11:06

Honestly I’d say don’t worry. You’ll learn things as you go along- get tips from other parents etc and you can ask the teachers and staff anything. It’s not that much of a big deal- but I know it feels like it when your baby is going to school!

MarklahMarklah · 07/06/2018 11:07

If you have to have logo stuff, can you check to see if there is a buy/sell/swap uniform page on fb or similar for your DC's school?
For my one DD I have:
6 polo shirts (logo)
2 long-sleeved shirts (no logo)
3 skirts
2 pinafores
3 pairs trousers
2 summer dresses
2 jumpers (logo)
3 cardigans (logo)

That tends to cover pretty much any eventuality and means if I don't get a wash done (or the weather's bad so things don't dry out in time), then there is still something acceptable to wear.

Of the list above, all the logo stuff was bought second-hand so rather than pay £8-12 new, I paid £1-3.

liz70 · 07/06/2018 11:08

"Any tips for a first timer? About school in general"

Drop them at the gate and run (or drive) like the wind.

Screaminginsideme · 07/06/2018 11:08

Find out when your new school has it’s summer fair. I brought 1 new jumper and then second hand one. The smaller sizes tend to be in excellent condition and once school starts no one will know. You will save some money and help the school.

Jemimapuddleduk · 07/06/2018 11:10

Also I’d say that only about half the kids have logo’d jumpers/cardis and polo’s. Don’t spend much on wellies or trainers/pumps- they don’t use them much at all (wellies have never been used).
Get a water bottle that’s big, plastic and unusual as often the name labels peel off with washing.
The best coats seem to be the ones from outdoor type shops (the ones with waterproof outer and removable fleece liner) they can then be used for winter and spring/summer.
Get shoes with the rubber protectors over toes (Clark’s do these)- the toes of shoes get trashed. I have no idea what dd does with hers!
Get a key ring/ something to attach to school book bag and duffel bag so child can identify their bag (if they have to get branded school bag they all look identical!).

RedLily84 · 07/06/2018 11:12

I have 2 logo polo shirts to wear with skirts. Then I have 4 pinafores and polo shirts as don’t need logos and 2 cardigans that are school colours and blooody £21 each! Summer dresses I have 5 as they’re about £4 each from Sainsburys

bluedabadeedabadoo · 07/06/2018 11:15

My son is Y2 and I've always had 5 of everything. I work full time so don't want to have to worry about washing and ironing during the week. I like to make sure in Sunday night that he has a clean set for every day. He doesn't need logo uniform though so it doesn't cost me much to buy 5 x £3 trousers, £4 jumpers and £3 for 2 shirts from Asda. He's so messy and I could have never got away with him wearing a set for more than one day. He also loses jumpers constantly (I've bought 15 this school year!!!!!) so I refuse to buy logo ones!!

cjt110 · 07/06/2018 11:17

Drop them at the gate and run (or drive) like the wind. Haha, I like this tip. He's fine at nursery/GP drop off so am hoping that continues.

Yes we have a school brandad book bag, drawsring bag too apparently. All will look identical. DS has a keyring with his name on. Might use this as an identifier. School provide a named water bottle so that's taken care of.
