To ask if your house smells like smoke

If you smoke outside and you get inside once finished? Can people who come inside your house smell it? Just curious

Yes. People who don’t smoke will be able to smell if you have just had a cigarette. I can tell when people at work go out for a smoke then get in the lift afterwards as it reeks of cigarette smoke. As a smoker you won’t be aware of it because you become nose blind to the smell

Anotherdayanotherdollar · 06/06/2018 20:37

I don't think that the smell of farts or alcohol (that has been drunk, not spilled!) become ingrained in the wall/furniture/soft furnishings of a house though...

PsychoPumpkin · 06/06/2018 20:38

My house still stinks of smoke and the previous tenants moved out over a year ago now. We’re not smokers

Brazenhussy0 · 06/06/2018 20:39

People are usually shocked to find out I’m a smoker (and judging by this thread, probably a little miffed that they’ve missed so many opportunities to look down their nose at me for my habit Grin)

Most people can’t detect that I smoke, either on my clothes/hair or when they’re in my house… and I smoke hanging out my kitchen window, not even outside.
I do smoke menthols though, which seem to be a lot less strong-of-scent for whatever reason.

TheDairyQueen · 06/06/2018 20:43

Classy. Not.

I can smell my neighbours smoke- it comes through the wall when she smokes in her kitchen and makes my stairs stink.

I hear ya! My neighbour chain smokes all day and we can smell the smoke coming through the walls too. We are non smokers and annoyed we have to put up with the smell in our house!

Neither of us smoke but I can smell it when we go to friends' houses, even though they smoke outside, it clings to their clothes, hair and breath even if they think eating mints helps it doesn't.

mancmummy1414 · 06/06/2018 20:51

Brazen Hussy Grin love that response.
So many judgey responses! Fag smell is horrible though - I’ve recently given up (people were shocked that I was a smoker too) I only ever smoked when DS was in bed or out of the house as I never wanted him to smell of it. Still mortified that my non smoking friends must have thought I stunk! My personal hygiene has always been impeccable other than smoking!

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 06/06/2018 20:53

My neighbour smokes outside her back door and it somehow goes around the 8ft high/ 6ft long fence, through the closed back door and all the way through to the front of my house. Thankfully she doesn't do it often as it makes me rage.

ElderflowerWaterIsDelish · 06/06/2018 20:54

It definitely clings to peoples skin, hair, clothes...there was a woman that walked past me in the street recently, she wasn't smoking at the time, but as we past each other the smell of smoke was overpowering, and that was outdoors with fresh air around us, so I imagine being indoors the smell would be worse

Jozxyqk · 06/06/2018 20:56

If you smoke, your house smells. TBH I can smell if someone has been near a smoker for any length of time, even a few hours ago, unless they've had a shower & hair wash, & changed all their clothes.

Cherrysherbet · 06/06/2018 20:57

Yes, if people smoke outside, you bring the stink in...and what a horrible stink it is. I'm all in favour of smokers keeping their stink to themselves.

MrTumblesSpottyHag · 06/06/2018 20:58

DD2 borrowed a coat from my friend's DS. Friend only smokes outside after the kids are in bed. DD2 wore the coat for less than 5 mins and she absolutely reeked. I had to wash her hair when we got home as it was clinging to her 🤮

bullyingadvice2017 · 06/06/2018 21:00

Folk love to bash the smokers. My whole family call my granny about being a dedicated smoker. Apparently she is all the cliches on here. I have smoked for 18 years and never once has it been mentioned. They regularly come to my house. I have doors open all the time and burn insence...

Pinguine · 06/06/2018 21:01

I very clearly remember when I was doing my teacher training and brought a pile of work home to mark. I couldn't work out why my room stank of smoke. Then marking the books, I realised that one of them absolutely reeked of smoke, from when the child had taken his book home to do homework. It really upset me and was a bit of a dawning moment about how different home lives can be.

Anyway, back to the question- my neighbours always smoke in the back garden, never in the house, and yet if they open their front door I get a strong waft of smoke smell.

I can also identify which children have smoker parents from the smell of a child walking past me.

So yes- smoke is one of the strongest, most persistent smells there is.

dildial · 06/06/2018 21:11

My elder daughter plays the violin, and she was at an orchestra camp where one of the tutors was the wife of a relatively famous (for teenagers) member of McFly. As a 'treat' for them working so hard over the course of the week, the tutor brought him to meet them. The one thing my daughter remembers is how much he stank of smoke.

Ginmakesitallok · 06/06/2018 21:12

When I was a smoker I'd have said no. Now I'm a non smoker - yes it stinks.

OpiningGambit · 06/06/2018 21:21

Yep. I can tell when my colleagues have been out for a smoke, and I've been to smokers' houses who only smoke outside, and I can still smell it. It can even trigger my asthma sometimes.

GandalfTheGoat · 06/06/2018 21:22

I can* also identify which children have smoker parents from the smell of a child walking past me.

Is that really true?

DP and I both smoke, keep saying we want to quit but haven't managed it yet. The thought of DD smelling of smoke has just made me feel a bit sick Sad

walnutwood · 06/06/2018 21:24

I bought a book from the charity shop a few days ago. Half a chapter in and I need to put the book in the bin. Not only does it reek but it’s making my hands smell disgusting by holding it.

walnutwood · 06/06/2018 21:25

@GandalfTheGoat yes, it is true. I remember when I was at primary school, other children asked me if I smoked. They could smell it on me so badly. It took over ten years (and lots of re-decorating) for the smell to leave my mum’s house after she stopped smoking.

youarenotkiddingme · 06/06/2018 21:28

Not everyone will be so obvious.

A colleague of mine smokes and no one but me knows because she told me once (drunk!) at a do where she went outside for a sneaky one.

Colleagues that go out at lunchtime - some smell when they return and some don't.

Some people o know are heavy smokers smell less than those I know have a few a day.

Yogafailure · 06/06/2018 21:34

Yes you can usually tell which pupils have a smoker in their house. Their clothing, hair, homework, reading folder and even lunch boxes can smell of smoke. I grew up with two smokers and it put me off ever wanting to even try smoking. Once my mum stopped she was 🤦🏼‍♀️😩 at the smell of smoke. My dad never stopped until the COPD finally killed him off well before his time.
