Express breast milk I mean. I'm en route to London, v crowded train. The loo has shit on the seat. Vestibules all crowded.

I'd obviously express under a coat so no one would see anything but it's noisy (the Medela Swing).

My first meeting is at 10 so no time to express till 2pm.

WIBU to do this? Too weird? Confused

I’m so surprised at how you managed to do this without it being obvious. I used to express at work and would go into the medical room to do so. I wouldn’t have sat at my desk with the pump up my top which seems comparable
I can’t imagine doing it on a train and am pretty surprised by some of the responses here

YorkshireAccent · 07/06/2018 16:31

Good for you OP. I’d have done the same. I actually can’t believe some people would rather you risked leaking through your clothes at best, and mastitis (which I’ve had myself and known people end up in hospital with) at worst because they don’t find it acceptable.

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 07/06/2018 17:06

Sunshiness the Medela Swing comes with a battery compartment, so you dont need to plug it in. Re the noise, I actually found it was drowned out by the train - probably only the person next to me could hear and even then not all the time.

I put my coat round me so nothing could be seen, turned to face the window and just did it - no one saw anything, or said anything, it was fine. Smile

Omg. I never realised one could put batteries in there!!!! Shock Thank you OP, you're a lifesaver!!!

I will be following your example soon then Grin

AHedgehogCanNeverBeBuggered · 07/06/2018 17:25

Sprinkles really? You don't see a difference between pumping discreetly in corner on a noisy train surrounded by strangers and pumping in an open-plan office surrounded by colleagues? ConfusedHmm

Sunshiness neither did I till 2 months ago (DS is 10 months old!).

Ah that makes me feel a bit better! Blush

Catservant · 07/06/2018 17:58

I personally wouldn’t as I would feel uncomfortable but I certainly wouldn’t care if anybody else did this so go for it I’d say.

Usernameunknown2 · 07/06/2018 18:28

Sprinklesinmyelbow i used batteries too and a breastfeeding cover so i could easily pump.

LadyLaSnack · 07/06/2018 18:35

Well done OP!

I'd have told you to do it.

I did it once on a train to London. Same as you - all covered up with my medela.

I then followed through with a convenient poo on the table.

Many many times as a working, freelance, travelling, breastfeeding woman did I rue the lack of places to express. Even in Central London and international airports there's often nowhere to go.

ConciseandNice · 07/06/2018 18:38

I did it in a stadium once, a marathon start line and on a busy high street. A few smiles but no nastiness. Well done OP!

anothermama · 07/06/2018 18:45

Good for you OP! I happily feed my baby anywhere but have never felt comfortable enough to express in public. Though I have hidden out in the loo for 15mins when I've been away with work and just got too uncomfortable. Definitely carry on with your train expressing! You're a hero 😁

LadyLaSnack · 07/06/2018 18:45

I also did in in a stadium once, but it was in the loo about 4 hours before kick off when there was no one around to need in there (I was working).

I did it into some costa coffee cups gaffered to the pump on the sleeper train once, after a packing error.

In the toilets in Kings Cross station (particularly horrible).

And trying to arrange milk into 100ml bottles to get through airport security without checkin luggage was always fun (before the rules changed).

wrenika · 07/06/2018 19:31

I can't say I'd be horrified or anything, but I'd probably be silently judging someone doing that in public...especially on (what sounds like) a busy train. Definitely shouldn't be taking up toilet facilities though...pretty unfair to every other passenger who might actually need them.

Fightthebear · 07/06/2018 19:39

I’d be silently judging with admiration.

CremeDeLaCrap · 07/06/2018 19:58

wrenicka Could you explain what there is to be judgemental about?

WittyJack · 07/06/2018 20:16

The medela swing does sound like a vibrator. I switched mine off at work pretty promptly and got them to sort me a private room!!

Good for you, OP. More people need to raise awareness of this. If men needed to express, there'd be pods with comfy chairs and refrigerated pouches all over the place.

(To be fair, I have seen such a thing but only in an article about an american airport - certainly not at your average British train station!)

CockOffPostmanPat · 07/06/2018 20:22

Well done op! If I'd seen you I would have just hoped the train jolting didn't cause you to spill your milk!

Notmorewashing · 07/06/2018 20:27

I have expressed on the train in the carriage, I used to do it in the toilets but once someone banged down the door I jumped and the milk spilt everywhere !

For those judging how and when do you expect women to pump who need to travel for work and rush back to sort out a baby? Clearly not had a young baby and had to balance work too.

Usernameunknown2 · 07/06/2018 20:29

For anyone who wants quiet, my friend got the spectra and if i have another dc and can get it then ill be getting that!

Loandbeholdagain · 07/06/2018 22:19

I hav, last train back from a big city, absolutely packed! Had no choice and can’t say I enjoyed it but thankfully was very noisy train and with a jumper, large coat and pump/bottle in my bag it was as discrete as possible. Felt stressful but most people too drunk to pay any attention/notice!

Wouldn’t choose to do it but was desperate!

Cakeorchocolate · 08/06/2018 19:11

Glad you managed OP. I disliked expressing at home enough! I don't think I'd have managed to do it at work let alone on a train. But who knows i may have found the courage if faced with your situation.

I hope you don't go back to expressing in the loo. No one should feel like they have to feed or express in the toilet. Now you've managed it in a carriage once, I hope you stick with it when you need to express on the train.
