I know lettuce, it really got to me. Do they turn the lights out at night? Are they allowed to run around? Does any adult actually talk to them?

lettuceWrap · 08/06/2018 07:53

In the centre of the photo, a wee lad who can’t be more than 6years old- I hope at least he has an older sibling with him. Horrified to think that this is happening to many hundreds of children as a deliberate policy.

'One of the most extreme attacks on press freedom under Obama was when DOJ obtained the phone records of various journalists to find their sources. The Right (and some on the left) went ballistic. Now the Trump DOJ is doing it. What will be their reaction?'

G7 unhappy

PerkingFaintly · 08/06/2018 08:37

I am heaving something of a sigh here.

It looks like Macron and Trudeau treated Trump like an adult they could have meaningful, probably fact-based, conversations with. As though they just don't understand that the "toddler" label isn't an insult, it's an actual description. Of course the conversations went badly.

Whereas Kim Jong Un understands Trump perfectly well, and knows how egocentric, childish, megalomaniacs roll – so sent him a Very Big Envelope. It probably had "Trump" written very big inside, too, along with lots of flattery.

Now I don't know that Kim will get better outcomes from Trump, who betrays as he breathes. But it does worry me if the other heads of the G7 are still clinging to false notions of what sort of creature 45 is.

I'm hoping they are actually coldly realistic about him, and have calculated that a Trump tantrum is simply an inevitable part of them getting a particular outcome (exactly like taking a dangerous "toy" from a toddler).

PerkingFaintly · 08/06/2018 08:49

Agh, I'm being unfair. Maybe the G7 leaders know exactly what he is, and are handling him as well as is possible in the circumstances.

I just rolled my eyes at the Very Big Envelope and thought, "Yup, you got his measure."

Roussette · 08/06/2018 09:23

He did look a twat with that envelope, just to remind you here's a pic of it Grin

'This is the flip side of Trump’s fatalism. What has made him fearless is what has made him careless. Because he’s never had to pay a lasting price for his mistakes. For much of his life he could afford to be cavalier about consequences. First, he had the safety net of his rich father’s money; then he was deemed by bankers in New York and casino regulators in New Jersey to be essentially too big to fail; and finally, and most important, the only person he had to worry about was himself. There was no right or wrong result for Trump, transactional, Machiavellian and unburdened by morals. The only adverse outcome was one that made him look bad. And he trusted that he could spin into a win whatever that was. Ergo: There was no reason to fret—there was nothing to fear. This was the superpower that made him the president.'

mimi I like that in the Telegraph link you posted, TM is towards the end referred to as Mrs Mrs rather than Mrs May.
Trite, but taking my chuckles where I can. (I once had a cat called Mrs Mrs.)

'In fact, evangelicalism is built on a platform of asserting one’s rightness—”I’m always right because the Bible is right.” We’re the ones who really believe the Bible; others have doubt. This is an error that is made within American evangelicalism, that doubt is the antithesis of faith, so when you express doubt, you’re somehow undermining the power of faith. And I don’t think we have tools for discriminating between the right kind of doubt and the wrong kind of doubt, or deleterious doubt and beneficial doubt.'

More evidence of Trump’s frostines to May: No10 were told no G7 bilat with her today by the White House as POTUS wasn’t doing anyway. Then they learn he’s seeing Macron and Trudeau.
