Just that really, I know a friend that's broke but still goes to pay someone to do simple tasks like that.

I think she likes to play the pathetic woman, and says she wants to get experts to do these jobs..

My ds calls my ds(12) when she needs screen wash, and takes him to check her tyres, as she is too lazy to learn incapable of doing it herself.
My eldest dc (15 and 12) have been taught how to do basic car maintenance, along with basic house maintenance.
They can both wallpaper, paint, change a fuse, change a light fitting, hang curtains, use the washing machine, cook, etc.

When we had a new dishwasher delivered, the delivery guys asked if I was "getting a man in" to plumb it in. I pointed at then 10yo ds, and said, no, he's going to do it. They were amazed, and stayed to watch him (I checked the pipes were tight but he did the rest), and they gave him £5 for being awesome.
As far as I'm concerned, everyone should know how to do basic stuff like that, dishwashers take less than 5 minutes to plumb in, as do washing machines, and don't require special tools or skills, so why pay someone to do it for you if you can do it yourself?

It's "who's broke" not "that's broke"

I don't understand why some people are almost boastful about being fucking useless. Back when I started driving you bought a Haynes manual and did as much as you could before paying a mechanic to fix something. Nowadays I wouldn't bother with much under the bonnet as it's a totally different system but tyre pressure and fluid levels are still driver maintenance.

I enjoy my independence and couldn't be relying on other people to do things for me. My dm is the opposite and never checks these things for herself. She doesn't want to and is quite happy to pay someone to do it for her. She can afford it but still seems pointless to me. She is generally quite frivolous though, I think I take after df more who is a fixer.

It's the standard response of the thicko - they like to make it seem like they're the "cool" one & that the rest of us are "geeks" for doing it... Wink

Firesuit.......how does screenwash last you a year?

Surely you are getting confused with antifreeze???

Bluelady · 06/06/2018 11:38

I can and do refill screen wash. Tyres are something else. I had a blow out on a motorway and thought I'd met my end. I don't trust myself with tyres and would rather someone who knew what they were doing dealt with them.

I dont think people on here are thickos or cool or boastful

On this thread at least

I am not speaking for any other threads

I'm how hard is it, the instructions are on the air machines, If you can read you can do it, If you don't do it your just plain lazy

PhoebefromFriends · 06/06/2018 11:48

I can add screen wash, check oil and tyre pressures, I also know how to jump start the car as I had a week where my old car wouldn't start so I carried a spare car battery with me until I got it fixed. I had to do these things as I'm single and capable. I think it all depends on your personal circumstances, I don't particularly enjoy doing any of it but I have to because I'm independent and currently don't have a large support network to call on. It's necessary for me to know.

That's great teaching ds to do the washing machine!

Knowing things like this are useful to stop leaks. I check my WM pipes once a year or so that they are all tight and no drips.
