To say if you don't like reality TV you don't GET it

Obviously lighthearted, and just for the record - I used to think things like TOWIE / Love Island / MIC etc were utter drivel and would have been disgusted by them.

However, I have realised that I was always going at them from the wrong angle. Now, I don't love them despite the trashiness, I love them because of the trashiness.

Once I let go of my snobby pants I was able to fully get stuck in and now think they are actually genius television. It is people watching in its absolute glory!

Can you tell I'm ecstatic that Love Island is back?? 😂

I do get it, but still think most reality TV is shite.
Even those that start off well usually quickly become manipulated by the producers, on the grounds that we all want to watch conflict , and like and admire people that just aren't very nice.
Well, I don't. I only watch reality TV if it's actually interesting and the people who are in it have something useful to say or do.

steppemum · 05/06/2018 17:08

(must admit though, I love bake off and the sewing bee)

HushabyeMountainGoat · 05/06/2018 17:08

@MissBax OP i blooming love Love Island. Amd yes you are right!

I think TV producers killed reality TV off for a while as absolutely everything was Celebrity. Bt they've gone back to using the public now which is just so much more interesting.

It's a lot of fun watching something like Love Island and being able to talk to people about it.

steppemum · 05/06/2018 17:10

wrt your last post - yes they are all adults, but all adults can be manipulated and edited to be presented in a way that they wouldn't chose.

Also, even though they are grown consenting adults. I am not comfortable with a format which encourages people to behave like idiots and to do worse and worse things to get attention.

When people behave badly, give them less attention, not more.

TheFirstMrsDV · 05/06/2018 17:11

Most reality tv depresses me.
I don't want to be reminded of the sheer amount of self obsessed air heads with no morals out there.

The lack of clothing etc doesn't bother me. Its the lying and scheming and lack of integrity.
I hate the false emotions on these shows. 'You know I love to bits babe'. 'We are like sisters' 'OMG I crying' 'You look AMAZING' and all that meaningless toss.

All those words used to say NOTHING.

Drives me insane.

I am wc. I don't like the freak show aspect of it all either. Bar a few exceptions these shows tend to feature the wc, albeit ones with money.

The benefit porn ones are on a whole other level of foulness.

BUT the shows are popular and if other people like them I am not going to judge them for it.

TwitterQueen1 · 05/06/2018 17:13

It's televised prostitution coupled with (d'ya see what I did there?) legitimised dogging. It's crass and disgusting.

I don't have a problem with the reality shows I do watch (bake off, I'm a celeb etc) because they're not based on public fucking for audience titillation.

lemonsunshinecake · 05/06/2018 17:14

I get it. I get that it's shit.

SilverySurfer · 05/06/2018 17:14

It's low life trash and I don't want to GET it.

Curlywurlywurly · 05/06/2018 17:15

I don't get how it's supposed to be reality tv when it's scripted?

BikingBeatrix · 05/06/2018 17:16

I imagine somebody could like it but still think it’s drivel. Getting it or not is different as several people might think they are getting lT but all for different reasons. Ooh nooo.

HushabyeMountainGoat · 05/06/2018 17:16

@TwitterQueen1 see I have more of a problem with I'm A Celeb because i feel like it's celebrities who are past the peak of their careers having to do humiliating tasks in order to stay in the public eye. Strictly is more dignified.

formerbabe · 05/06/2018 17:17

Most reality tv depresses me

Different strokes for different folks.

It has the opposite effect on me. Cheers me up when I'm down.

beluga425 · 05/06/2018 17:18

I just get bored. I don't enjoy them on any level. I thought reality TV was meant to be trashy TV you could just watch with zero effort or thought. If I have to work to access them on some other level then what's the point?
Boring, boring boring boring BORING!!!

TwitterQueen1 · 05/06/2018 17:24

Yes, I get your point Hushabye though we (hopefully) get to see more of contestants' personalities on Celeb (except for the dreadfully boring people like that Scottish MP last year).

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/06/2018 17:34

I’m just watching love island to see what it’s like. It’s shit. Thus far we have met the vacuous females. Waiting for the males.

It’s just an extension of the Insta / selfie / self obsessed crap that dominates certain people’s lives in place of actual life.

Male no 1 has landed. Omg. I’m tuning it off.

MissBax · 05/06/2018 17:37

Mummyoflittledragon 😂😂😂

You've got to get to know them!

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 05/06/2018 17:38

I agree with a pp not everything has to be highbrow. Saying that because of love island popularity im Giving it a shot, one episode in and I don't get it. Theyve been paired up and in 8 weeks the public votes who has the best fake relationship? What happens in between?

musicinthe00ssucks · 05/06/2018 17:43

I’m definitely not a TV snob but I really can’t stand crap like TOWIE, MIC, Love Island and BB. I just don’t get the appeal of over inflated egos —and lips— living in perpetual drama

MissBax · 05/06/2018 17:44

FrustratedTeddyLamp
Between now and then alot of the (biggest) tools will get voted off, the personas of the others will stop because they can't keep them up for that long. And you realise that they're not dissimilar to any of us - just normal human beings, albeit alot more attention seeking. But generally they are just normal people, just from a different generation/culture.

FlyingElbows · 05/06/2018 17:45

I do get it. I really really do get it. Lots and lots and lots of those who actively participate or feature in "reality" television are both intellectually and economically poor. A lot of them are so desperate to be "famous" that they will do literally anything to maintain their notoriety. Even... gasp... doctors! Nobody with a healthy relationship with their self esteem seeks that out. I don't know how old you are but if I said "Kinga" would you know who I was talking about? Do you honestly think that sort of behaviour is just a great laugh with no consequence?

Skyejuly · 05/06/2018 17:47

Love island sounds horrific. What a waste of time.

MissBax · 05/06/2018 17:48

God yeah I remember Kinga! Of course that was awful and I don't think anyone would argue about that.

OP posts:
lynmilne65 · 05/06/2018 17:57

Never watched Never will. Have a brain FFS

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 05/06/2018 17:59

I find those programmes irritating. It's like having the annoying gossip group from work in your living room.

WilburIsSomePig · 05/06/2018 18:02

OP, I think you're exactly the audience they're looking for. I'm not. Both is fine.
