To open a pack of nappies 3 months before the baby is due?

It seems a bit ridiculous to ask, but I want to pack my hospital bag early to get it off my mind. I know it's a bit precious (okay it's probably ridiculous) but it's always at the back of my mind, cycling round. I want to put in some size 0, size 1, and size 2 in case of larger/smaller baby so I don't want to just chuck one 22 pack in.

Also I kind of want to see how small they are. Which is also ridiculous. I suppose what I'm worried about is if nappies have an expiration date. Wow, typing that makes it seem way more pfb than when I thought it!

If it makes you feel better then I can't see the harm in it

RiddleyW · 05/06/2018 08:06

Fine to open the nappies!

I packed my bag really early too - it gave me an excited thrill every time I looked at it.

Not sure any newborns need size 2 do they though?

I did need to send my Mum out for tiny baby size vests and babygros though! I thought newborn would do but they swamped my (2 weeks overdue!) 6lb baby.

PerryPerryThePlatypus · 05/06/2018 08:07

I'm fairly sure you are fine to open the nappies.

CluelessMummy · 05/06/2018 08:07

Nappies don't have an expiration date as far as I'm aware so by all means get them out! Is size 0 a newborn size? I'm not in the UK. The standard newborn ones here cater for up to 4kg (around 10lbs - there's also a prem size) so I wouldn't bother packing any size other than that, but since they'll only grow there's no harm in having different sizes at home obviously! I found my bag filled quickly with other stuff - maternity pads, breast pads, baby blanket etc so I wouldn't have had room for all that!

Anniegetyourguns · 05/06/2018 08:08

I thought size two would be too big too, until we had a guy come down from Scotland with my stepdad to help my mum to move in. His wife had just had an 11 pounder! Like a week before he came down, poor woman!

Fine to open them but size one does 4.5 to 11 lbs. I’m sure they will be fine.

NameChangeCuddleBums · 05/06/2018 08:08

I wouldn’t because you could still return what you don’t need if the packets are unopened.

My baby did end up needing size 0 but was just fine with size 1s until my husband went to buy some (5 days later when we realised there was a smaller size).

In our experience size 1s are quite a lot bigger than 0s, each packet will have a recommended baby weight on it. I would just take a packet of size 1s as you may end up using quite a few.

All the best for your new baby.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 05/06/2018 08:09

My oldest went straight into size 2 nappies but you could tell he was going to be gigantic from the size of my stomach. He was born 11lbs 10ozs Grin

NameChangeCuddleBums · 05/06/2018 08:10

DragonsAndCakes said what I was trying to much more concisely!

Anniegetyourguns · 05/06/2018 08:11

Size 0 are 1.5-2.5 kilo. Don't know what that is in grams but my mum said I'd be better off getting a couple- all the babies she hade were tiny and the smallest size commonly available made us look ridiculous!

mininionsteve · 05/06/2018 08:12

I packed at the last minute becauseI didn't want to tempt fate. But do what makes you happy. Don't waste your money on size twos though you won't need them for a few weeks. Size ones are 5-11lbs and I would hope you would would know by now if baby was looking bigger than that. Check the weight on whatever brand you have.

Top tip: pack individual kits in to large freezer bags: nappy, sleepsuit, hat. And label first outfit second outfit etc. so your birth partner can just grab the right one without bothering you. Take two spare packs on and your covered! Good luck Smile

DrWhy · 05/06/2018 08:12

My first was 9lb6oz so on the large side for a first baby and had the sonographer fretting and insisting I see a consultant at 39 weeks and he was in size 1. I think if you are going to have a baby that goes straight into size 2 you’ll know about it in advance!

Anniegetyourguns · 05/06/2018 08:12

Alright gotcha! I'll just take the packets seperately- more room for baby clothes and stuff in the bag! I guess I'll see how small they are when I see how small she is 😂😂

I had a 10lb 3 baby & he was in size 1 albeit only for a couple of weeks but size 2 would have been too big at the time. With all mine I opened nappies between 33 (first baby!) and 40 weeks (third!) pregnant to have my hospital bag ready. Hope all goes well with rest of your pregnancy!

Anniegetyourguns · 05/06/2018 08:14

MIninionsteve- I Love that idea! Im definitely doing that!

You won’t need size two nappies. My daughter was 10lb 5oz and I used size 0/1 xx

Jammycustard · 05/06/2018 08:14

I’ve got a half bag of newborn nappies left over from child two that I’m going to use on child three when they arrive.

EstrellaDamn · 05/06/2018 08:14

I would open a pack, but only one. You may find the brand you buy isn't quite the right fit for your baby, or isn't as soft as you'd like, and you might experiment with a few kinds before you settle on the one you prefer.

bonzo77 · 05/06/2018 08:17

0 are really tiny. For babies under 6lb. Mine were 5.11, 5.3 and 5.14 and we went to size 1 pretty fast. Just pack 1s and send someone for 0s if you need them. You’ll def use the 2s eventually so nothing lost if you get some of them too.

Shehz21 · 05/06/2018 08:18

Yeap another one with a whooper here (10lbs6oz) and she needed size 0 for couple of weeks before moving on to size 1.

beepbeeprichie · 05/06/2018 08:19

If you’re worried about size then I would recommend taking up to one month size vests as well as newborn. We were fine with size 1 nappies but couldn’t get the newborn vests fastened Grin

Anniegetyourguns · 05/06/2018 08:23

The birth weight in my family is generally around 5.7. except my sister who was 3.something (but she was a c-section preemie twin) and my pregnancy BMI was low, so I did buy a pack of size 0, but I think it only has 22 in it, I could just take the whole pack and if I don't need them I could see if the hospital accepts donations for preemies?

OP posts:
kaytee87 · 05/06/2018 08:24

I'd just take size 1. If you have a tiny baby you can always send someone out to buy some size 0 and the hospital will have a small supply of nappies too. You will not need size 2.
For clothes my son was 8lbs12oz and quite tall, he fit into newborn sized clothing for a few weeks before going into 'up to 1 month' clothes.

Branleuse · 05/06/2018 08:26

my ds2 was 10lb and wore size 0 when he was born. Its really unlikely youll need size 2 if youre measuring a normal size and are not diabetic

morningconstitutional2017 · 05/06/2018 08:29

It's always good to be prepared and if it gives you one less thing to worry about then go for it. There's nothing worse than having something at the back of your mind nagging away at you.
