To be unhappy my child's phone was confiscated?

I have no issues with the phone itself being confiscated but apparently it is only to be returned on Friday - surely this cannot be right?

OP posts:

Maybe it'll teach your child to behave as you don't seem to be getting the message to pass on. This probably won't be a first offence.

If you stand with the school your kid might learn a lesson, if you don't you're teaching that don't worry mummy will back you up no matter what.

Metoodear · 04/06/2018 17:27

And dispite what the guardian May say we don’t live in the bronx
And mobiles actually put children more at risk of being attacked

SameTerfDifferentUserName · 04/06/2018 17:27

Totally with the school here. Your child knowingly broke a rule which presumably is in place to safeguard all the children?

You might want to be more concerned with your child’s behaviour than your phone!

SodTheGreenfly · 04/06/2018 17:28

Your DC broke the rules. The pbone was confiscated. Quite rightly.

If tjere is a safety issue re long/tricky journey then give the child a cheap paygo phone with no bells or whistles and tell brat child to keep in bag and keep their nose clean.

FFS - I'd kick off over poor discipline, violence, incompetent teaching. Not confiscation of smart phone due to rule breaking. You are being more immature than the average 12 year old.

FlyingElbows · 04/06/2018 17:31

School policies are for on school property during school hours. Out of school hours and off school property I am the parent and I am in charge. It never fails to astonish me how much control you English people are happy to give to schools. The phone comes back and they can take their home made rule and poke it! Seriously, I'd pay money to watch schools try and implement crap like that in Scotland, there'd be a riot!

ThenCameTheFools · 04/06/2018 17:31

Our students have their phones confiscated, a disciplinary note, and a parent has to come to get the phone back.
We rarely get parents like the OP but we do get parents who shrug and say I'll come for it in a couple of weeks. You never see their kids using their phones again...

stillswimming · 04/06/2018 17:31

Good for the school. A confiscation until the end of the day would have little effect given that the child will be in lessons and not kiss the phone anyway. A five day confiscation cuts them off from friends/internet/social media and is more of a deterrent.

I'd be matching the five day confiscation with one of my own, not storming down to the school demanding the phone back.

MumofBoysx2 · 04/06/2018 17:32

What are children supposed to do with their phones during the day? If my son decides to travel by bus to secondary school when he goes, we'll buy him a phone and will want him to take it. I wonder what they are supposed to do with them during the day. Maybe they are OK if they are switched off in their bags until home time? They shouldn't confiscate it for 5 days, it's not up to them whether your child has their phone in their own time, only at school.

pinkbraces · 04/06/2018 17:33

What dreadful attitudes some of you have. Yes OP run into school, tell them your rights and demand the phone back for your special little oneHmm
Perhaps you should be saying to your child hard luck, you know the rules and leave it at that.

MiddleAgedMe · 04/06/2018 17:33

No more information is needed. School has no jurisdiction over you child's possessions outside of school hours.

DontThinkTwice1

I would have asked to speak to the manager or call had office.
Next time take a picture of the staff and email head office.

viques · 04/06/2018 17:35

I think I must have been born under a lucky star, in all my years of education including travelling on my own on country buses aged 8 and then walking unaccompanied for over a mile from the bus station to my primary school in all weathers including blizzards and floods, and indeed, my years of further education, parenthood, commuting and working in many different places I always managed to survive without a mobile phone.

I do worry that today's children are unable to get themselves to and from school for four days without clutching a bit of plastic . Their parents need to be teaching them strategies to deal with not having a phone for those occasions when the phone breaks, runs out of battery or indeed is confiscated for breaking school rules on mobile use.

GetInMyNelly · 04/06/2018 17:35

Phones can't be used at lunchtime?!!

That's ridiculous!!

Sirzy · 04/06/2018 17:37

Why getin given that phones and social media are so often used as a bullying tool I think it is a very sensible rule.

Eemamc · 04/06/2018 17:37

Bottom line it’s a safeguarding issue. I’ve confiscated phones from kids before. They get locked away until a parent comes in, they are asked to read and sign acknowledgement of the school phone policy and phone is returned. I only confiscate if I see the phone or it goes off in class. If it was switched off in their bag there would be no issue. The kids absolutely know what they are doing. A week without the phone will probably do them good tbh. Your child broke a rule, and there are consequences. What is your problem with that?

kaytee87 · 04/06/2018 17:37

I'm not seeing why a mobile can't be used on their lunch break?

SameTerfDifferentUserName · 04/06/2018 17:38

Schools do have a right to confiscate items that are a safeguarding risk. They also have the right to check the phone if they have grounds for being concerned about what it may contain, or some schools policies will say they’ll just hand to the police if any suspicions and parents can collect from them!

Don’t want your child’s phone confiscated speak to them about appropriate use!

harshbuttrue1980 · 04/06/2018 17:39

What sort of child do you want to raise? If you want to raise a law-abiding young adult who can settle down into society and follow rules set by employers, society etc then back up the school. If you want to raise a little brat who bangs on about their "rights" without knowing about their responsibilities and who will struggle to adapt to the real world, then take them out of this school. There's no point sending your child to a disciplined school and fighting against it - if you are really anti-school and anti-discipline, then there are plenty of chaotic schools with no discipline and plenty of empty places.

GetInMyNelly · 04/06/2018 17:39

Absolute bullshit, no one had phones when I was in primary or secondary.....oh look! I was beat up on a daily basis.

crumpet · 04/06/2018 17:39

My children are very clear that if they break a school rule and there is a consequence, then my attitude is that they have to suck it up with good grace and perhaps think about how to avoid a similar situation occuring again.

GetInMyNelly · 04/06/2018 17:39

I'd simply give my DS another phone to use. I'd tell him to be more careful next time

Sirzy · 04/06/2018 17:40

But I guess you also coped very well not having a phone so can any other child

You can’t deny that smart phones are currently a massive problem when it comes to bullying.

Eemamc · 04/06/2018 17:41

It’s a safeguarding issue! There are all kinds of reasons why other students shouldn’t be photographed and things posted on social media. The rules aren’t there just to piss off the kids. There are reasons. I remember having to queue up at lunch to use the pay phone in the foyer if I needed to call my mum when I was at school. They can live without their phone for a few days.

BiggerBoat1 · 04/06/2018 17:41

Phones can't be used at lunchtime?!! That's ridiculous!!

Why is that ridiculous? I'm pleased to say my children's school has the same policy. I'd rather they were chatting to each other or playing some sport than twatting about on their phones.

Candyflip · 04/06/2018 17:41

getinmynelly no, of course not. Have a little think about why that may be. Ffs.
