AIBU to ask you to tell me your uni experiences

DD is 19, did very well with A Levels and after a gap year to save money she’s heading off to uni in September.

However, she loves her job, the people, a promotion is in the balance soon and she’s completely smitten with her boyfriend. Three months before going, she’s worried that she’s going to be lonely, unhappy and bored at her uni.

She’s visited her uni, has friends there and previously was overjoyed. It’s only two hours away, she’ll have long holidays and she’ll still be able to see her boyfriend and local friends during these holidays. Her boyfriend may even move up with her next summer.

She’s now so worried she won’t enjoy it, so I offered to post here to ask people for their uni experiences. I’m hoping it’ll help show her it will be an amazing, fun and independent experience. If the replies are what I expect anyway. Grin

Só those of you who went to uni: did you enjoy it? Did you like the independence? Did you get on well? Would you recommend halls compared to living at home?

Thank you Smile

I had an OK time - it wasn't all it's cracked up to be. We had to spend so much time in labs and there was so much work to do I didn't have time to party and socialize.
I made some great friends though and I did enjoy having all my friends just a stone's throw away on campus or nearby. We spent most of the time studying together. I am still friends with them now but we are scattered all over the place (over 3 continents in fact).
Had a hideous experience as a postgrad and dropped out in the end - absolutely hated every minute of it.

To be completely honest, if I was young now I wouldn't go to uni. I see how my life has turned out and I would be in the same position now if I hadn't gone. There is no way I would be putting myself into that amount of debt. If I was still interested in the sciences I would try to get a job in a scientific company straight after A-levels and perhaps do a degree sponsored by the company if that was possible.

What is your DD going to study? Will it bring her any advantages compared to the promotion she has been offered now? I know you said it is not a large company with no further promotion opportunities but if she does well she could move to another company and progress from there. Might she be better off financially if she doesn't go to uni and continues to work, save the money instead of getting into debt and then make progress in the field she is in now?
