To ask where to buy school trousers for super skinny but very tall 4yo?

Mumofaskinnyone · 04/06/2018 09:58

I may be a little AIBU because I'm posting here for traffic, but hoping someone with a similar shape child can help me.

My son starts school in September. He is 4.5 yo but is very skinny and very very tall (98th centile for height).

This means that for trouser length he really needs age 5 or even age 6, the problem is that he has the waist size of a 3 year old.
His legs are also very slim.

I am despairing of how to get school trousers to fit him tbh. All the ones we've tried so far he needs age 5or 6 for them to be long enough, but that means they are vast at the waist, you could literally fit two of him into them. Even "slim fit" trousers have been no better, those are generally a better fit on the legs and bottom but still far far too big at the waist.

I managed to get a pair of girls longer length age 5 to sort of fit by cinching them in with the elastic and buttons at the waist but that made them really bunched up all across the back and it didn't look comfortable at all.

Can anyone offer suggestions of shops that sell school trousers for skinny beanpole kids?

M&S skinny fit

katycb · 04/06/2018 10:01

My twins are very skinny and tall (not particularly rall for age but tall compared to skinniness!) so 2-3 waist 4-5 length And I buy m&s ones with an adjustable waist. They are both girls though but the trousers we have could easily do for either they aren't very girly!

M&S do extra long trousers. Ds is always in 2-3 years younger but extra long. You might have to order online.

Mumofaskinnyone · 04/06/2018 10:05

Right, 3 votes for m+s means that's worth a go!

Not unless anything has changed recently. At one stage there were 7years between what dd needed for height and width. I spent years getting dd's adjusted by a seamstress, not helped by the fact her height was all legs. Either learn to sew or find a seamstress now, it might be different with boys clothes but with girls it got even worse when she needed age 11+ for the height because they are made even more generous from puberty onwards

Snowysky20009 · 04/06/2018 10:09

M&S adjustable waist.

Fatted · 04/06/2018 10:12

I have the same problem with my eldest! He turned 5 in March. Already all his 5-6 trousers are getting a bit short, but they are all still huge on the waist!!

He's got trousers from Asda that have the buttons and elastic inside the waist to adjust them. Sorry can't think of a better way to describe it!!

I'm sure there's videos on you tube on how to do something similar by yourself as well.

M&S all the way, ds is 14 now has a 30inch leg but 23 inch waist but I’ve always managed to find slim fit with elasticated waist at m&s for him

Jeans from m&s and next also available long and skinny right up to 15 years and 32 leg

Janediamond · 04/06/2018 10:14

Pop him in shorts and find a seamstress by the time the cold weather kicks in x

sentenceinterrupted · 04/06/2018 10:16

We also did the m&s online for tall skinny.

Had the opposite problem for ds2 and have to actually sew the legs up

Flicketyflack · 04/06/2018 10:16

M & S slim fit trousers Smile

Invisimamma · 04/06/2018 10:18

Sainsbury’s do skinny fit, extra long length. So you get and extra 4cm on the length.

Although Sainsbury’s sizing is quite generous, perhaps so down a size and get long length ones...

Mumofaskinnyone · 04/06/2018 10:20

janediamond I'm starting to think he'll be i shorts all year! Problem is he gets cold quickly, this might be due a lack of fat covering.

Asda do slim waist trousers, they don't wash very well but they do fit my son.

Mumofaskinnyone · 04/06/2018 10:22

The adjustable waist things don't work on all the trousers we've tried so far, they are so big that even buttoned in to the max on the elastic they are still falling down. And also tbh they are not comfortable when buttoned in to the max, it makes the fabric bunch up loads, and he refuses to wear them.

applealpaca I think he'll go through the knees long long before I wash them to death so that's not such a worry. He's trashing trousers at an extraordinary rate at the moment so cheap is definitely a bonus.
I will have a look at asda too.

I have the same situation with my 2 who are 4 and 6. Tried different brands with the elasticated buttons inside which looked ok when tried on but often still came down once they started running around. Best solution I’ve found was to order ‘snake’ belts, elasticated belts that clip together. Easier for kids to use than conventional belts, I couldn’t find in the shops but got online here www.britishbelts.co.uk/Kids-Elasticated-Belts/. Works better than my botched sewing jobs!!

alwaysthepessimist · 04/06/2018 10:26

M&S or Next always seem to fit my skinny & tall 6yo DD - she has to wear 2 years up on her actual age too - I try to go for elasticated waists rather than the button ones as she always got irritated by the button part

LongtimeLurker29 · 04/06/2018 10:29

My son is very tall but very skinny. I usually buy Sainsbury's slim fit and extended length ones. They have an adjustable waistband too so no sewing needed 😊

BigusBumus · 04/06/2018 10:38

I have had 3 boys like that and ALWAYS got their trousers from Next Directory - 5 styles to choose from and they do a slim-fit with adjusters on the inside. They last the whole year and even get handed down to younger friends kids as they are so robust.

Here's another bit of advice, from about March - July your son could wear shorts - (the Next Combat ones are great) but in a smaller age size. The length isn't an issue then but they fit perfectly round the waist. In fact since last September my son (in Year 6) has only worn shorts, even through all the snow, as has most of his friends. But I think that may be a "thing" amongst his peers.

SpottyBrolly · 04/06/2018 10:42

Morrisons or the girl's section in Sainsbury's.

CruCru · 04/06/2018 10:54

Ah sorry, those start at age 8. Please ignore my earlier post.

Freshprincess · 04/06/2018 11:05

M&S for mine as well. Adjustable waist, and they also make ones that you can let down the hem. My SIL who is handy with a sewing machine used to take the waist in for my super tall skinny nephew.

Getting trousers to fit mine was the bane of my life, be prepared to have to replace them by Christmas!

mrsjackrussell · 04/06/2018 11:10

My son is very slim and iv always bought next slim fit. Fit lovely. They have adjustable waistband too.
