To ask where to buy school trousers for super skinny but very tall 4yo?

I may be a little AIBU because I'm posting here for traffic, but hoping someone with a similar shape child can help me.

My son starts school in September. He is 4.5 yo but is very skinny and very very tall (98th centile for height).

This means that for trouser length he really needs age 5 or even age 6, the problem is that he has the waist size of a 3 year old.
His legs are also very slim.

I am despairing of how to get school trousers to fit him tbh. All the ones we've tried so far he needs age 5or 6 for them to be long enough, but that means they are vast at the waist, you could literally fit two of him into them. Even "slim fit" trousers have been no better, those are generally a better fit on the legs and bottom but still far far too big at the waist.

I managed to get a pair of girls longer length age 5 to sort of fit by cinching them in with the elastic and buttons at the waist but that made them really bunched up all across the back and it didn't look comfortable at all.

Can anyone offer suggestions of shops that sell school trousers for skinny beanpole kids?

Sainsburys definitely don't work. I ordered every single style they do in boys and girls in the 20% off last week and they are all a disaster. Even the supposed slim fit one are like clown trousers. He'd need age 3 for sainsburys to fit on the waist unfortunately.

M&S extra long, in the smallest size you can get away with the length for. They are still adjustable waists, so you can pull them in further. They start about age 3.

Mumofaskinnyone · 04/06/2018 11:13

I will look at the snake belt, I've never heard of those.

The button things do cause issues, he's got them on most of his jeans and he now refuses to wear them if the buttons are done up because he says the buttons dig in. In fairness to him, I think he's telling the truth as they leave red marks.
He has spent last winter in joggers with tie cord waists and is now in shorts every day, but school don't allow joggers and he'll be too cold in shorts over winter, he gets cold quickly.

Next Slim Fit have always been great for tall but skinny DS. I tried M&S at first but after several pairs of ripped seams and worn out knees, I tried Next and they last all year. Been buying them for several years now and never had a problem.

Yet another vote for M&S here. They are pricier than supermarket trousers, so I resented paying more as DS is very good at wrecking clothes. However, I am pleased to say that they not only fit well, but have also lasted much longer than any I've bought from ASDA/Sainsburys. In fact I will probably be able to pass them on to his younger half sister, if she turns out to be the same tall skinny shape as my two are! Like your DS, he's good at going through the knees of trousers - hasn't happened at all with the M&S ones.

Quick additional vote for the polo shirts that Aldi get in occasionally - the only ones I've bought over the years which haven't shrunk like mad after a few washes.

I found that slim fit applies only to legs, not waist!

OhTheTastyNuts · 04/06/2018 21:44

Some of the Next school trousers allow you to select different waist sizes (slim, standard, plus). I used to get the slim ones for DS1.

I have an over 99.6 percentile, skinny boy. I have always bought M&S extra long. They don't do the extra long length in all trouser types, and I have always had to order them online.

If you go to their website you can filter boys school trousers by extra long length. The 'long' length aren't long enough, but the extra long are fine for him

Another vote for M&S, they do a slim fit which is a smaller waist size than the usual version in that size as opposed to just the slim leg style although that's not always clear! And extra long options but I've never managed to find them in a store and they go in and out of stock online too.

UrgentScurryfunge · 05/06/2018 10:41

M&S. My average height 5 year old is wearing age 2-3 with the hems dropped down.

I bought them originally for DS1 because the age 3-4s looked like a sack of spuds by the time I yanked the waists in. They still look good after two school years of regular use.

DS1 solves the problem by permanently wearing shorts that are a few years younger! I just have to confiscate them when they are worn out after years of use or become hotpants as his legs continue to sprout.

(This isn't entirely unconnected with my regular complaints on anti-sweetner threads Grin)

Luisa27 · 05/06/2018 10:43

M&S - some of their boys trousers have the little elastic bit with the buttons each side of the waist ( on the inside of waistband)

IWantMyHatBack · 05/06/2018 10:44

DS is very slim and tall, we've always bought Next slim fit. They last forever and even after a full school year are still in excellent condition.

Fruitcorner123 · 05/06/2018 10:46

I also vote for m and s skinny fit long length. My DS (7) is in age 5-6 trousers and the waste is adjusted to its smallest but the length is fine for him.

Fruitcorner123 · 05/06/2018 10:47

... also they usually do a 20% off uniform event in mid June so worth waiting for that.

FusionChefGeoff · 05/06/2018 11:16

Slightly off piste but relevant - I'd recommend a thermal base layer too - DS is similar to yours and he loved wearing his extra layer instead of bulky jumpers / coats and I was reassured he wasn't using calories up keeping warm!

babyboyHarrison · 05/06/2018 11:35

I've wondered what parents do for genuinely skinny kids. My son is average height and 75 percentile on weight and we still need to by slim fit and pull them in with the adjustable waists. Sizing seems to be very generous. He is slimmer than you would expect for his weight (he just is very solid and muscular so weighs heavy). When he started school the m&s measurements would have had him with a waist of a 2 year old with height of a 4 year old and he is not skinny. I know it's no help but I do sympathise.

FeeseAndChickle · 05/06/2018 11:42

My son is average height but is very skinny and muscular (I'm very jealous of his amazing 6 pack!). He's 8 now and I've always bought Asda slim fit school trousers for him and they fit really well.
