Ripped jeans. Why?

5foot5 · 01/06/2018 23:16

This is going to out me as terribly middle-aged or staid or something (well I am happy to admit to middle-aged) but I look at the jeans people wear which have been specially ripped / pre-distressed or whatever they call it and I just don't get it.

I am sure some of these cost several times what I pay for a pair of jeans but if I happened to rip a pair or go through on the knee they would go straight in the bin.

I realize they must be fashionable and desirable but I just don't understand why?

If it was only young teenagers I wouldn't necessarily expect to understand, but I now realize I am seeing people in their 30s and even 40s in jeans that look like the cat has had a go at them.

is it me? I am only 55 not a geriatric. Just what is the attraction?

I think it's weird to buy them pre-ripped. But my lovely jeans that fit me so nicely have gone through at the knee and I keep wearing them because a) I didn't stupidly buy ripped jeans they ripped naturally b) they still fit nicely and are comfortable and I don't really care what anyone thinks about the rip and c) people buying ripped jeans have made me accidentally fashionable so that's an added bonus.

angryburd · 01/06/2018 23:21

I feel the same way about cold shoulder tops.

Whisky2014 · 01/06/2018 23:22

Why not?

RunMummyRun68 · 01/06/2018 23:24

Don't you remember in the 89's when this was the fashion?

This isn't new

RunMummyRun68 · 01/06/2018 23:24

80's even!!!Grin

TheBigFatMermaid · 01/06/2018 23:24

I am 50 but know it would out me as old, so say nothing when my 12 year old DDs friends appear with ripped clothing they have paid more for than they would proper clothing. Trouble is, DD is far too influenced by me and doesn't get it either, although she knows enough to keep her gob shut too!

WorraLiberty · 01/06/2018 23:26

I'm 49 and whilst I wouldn't wear them myself, I think they look nice on other people.

I'm not so keen on the ones where there's just a gaping hole in the knees and nowhere else though.

Each to their own. I don't think taste has anything to do with age really.

80sMum · 01/06/2018 23:32

People will wear anything if an effective marketing campaign convinces them that it's fashionable! One year, nobody would be seen dead in it; the following year everyone is wearing it.

I bet if "Margaret Thatcher" blouses and tweed skirts were promoted, pretty soon everyone would be wearing them!

Davros · 01/06/2018 23:51

I remember the first time I saw these. A couple of mates came in the pub wearing jeans ripped at the knees. That was in the early/mid 80s. It staggers me how very old some so-called fashions are (tattoos I'm looking at you)

islaand · 02/06/2018 00:19

I like them but can never be bothered to shave my legs so don't wear them

Kursk · 02/06/2018 00:51

I would never buy ripped jeans, but I wear mine until the end, they are at their most comfortable the day before they fall apart.

ColinsVeryJolly · 02/06/2018 00:54

I’m 38 and love ripped jeans.

I think it’s because I’m so very staid and boring otherwise and I’m harking back to my rock chick youth.

I’m also a bit chunky of leg and think they break up what would otherwise be a massive expanse of denim sausage.

Ummmmgogo · 02/06/2018 00:56

people in their 30s and older are still allowed to follow fashion. that's why.

Sparklesocks · 02/06/2018 01:24

Just a trend! Fashion isn’t always logical - there were wilder garments in the 70s and 80s..

I think part of getting older is not liking what the young folk are wearing Grin

liz70 · 02/06/2018 02:05

This poor lass. Sad Not only did her sweater get caught on a nail and half unravel itself, but her jeans also got shredded in the washing machine. I feel I should set up a gofundme account for some new clothes for her.

Ripped jeans. Why?
tryharderrepeat · 02/06/2018 02:27

They're comfy...

If you like tight jeans... they're a bit restrictive but if you have them ripped at the knees - you can sit down more easily, bend your knees etc

Of course if you have them ripped everywhere else then I guess maybe you're hot and like a breeze.

Or it's just fashion

ragged · 02/06/2018 03:44

Ripped jeans were a thing when I was a teen (I'm 50).
I didn't get it, either, but I remember seeing peers wear them in 1980s.
I can't be asked to deal with non-functional fashion.

AltheaorDonna · 02/06/2018 03:50

I’m 48 and proudly wore my ripped 501s back in the 80s. So it’s hardly new!

FriendlyOcelot · 02/06/2018 03:51

You do sound terribly staid op Grin

I think they’re nice. I have a pair of ripped boyfriend jeans which I wear in the day, and a pair of smart black skinnies from Baukjen with ripped knees which I wear in the evening. The rips add a certain edge; I’ll always make sure that what I am wearing alongside them is quite understated.

In fact I have a great go-to casual evening outfit: my black ripped jeans with a tight black cold shoulder top (Baukjen too) and leopard print flats. You’d hate it Grin

TheOriginalEmu · 02/06/2018 04:37

Because I like how they look? It’s not that hard to fathom surely. I personally hate shirts done up to the top with no tie but it’s not hurting me if someone else wears it.

worlybear · 02/06/2018 05:23

Baaaa!

PeanutButterCheesecake · 02/06/2018 08:14

They look stupid. There are pictures on fb with patchy sunburnt legs where they burned through the hole. Don't think they realise they looked equally stupid with the jeans on.

Likely to be worn by the sort of people who duckpout and have stupid fake glasses or flowers or dog ears on their head.

cricketballs3 · 02/06/2018 08:19

I honestly can not remember this being a thing in the 80s (and I am old enough to remember!) Was it a regional thing?

In terms of the op - I'm in full agreement although the thought of seeing fat squishing out if I wore them maybe a factor

Hamandcheesebaguette · 02/06/2018 08:22

I don't own any non ripped jeans.

I wear them because I think they look "cool". My style is sort of rocky and geberall wear them with my DM boots with the rose pattern and a plain long sleeved t-shirt. My a scarf with skulls on and a leather studded jacket if it's a bit cold.

It's just my style, it never occurred to me that there are people looking at me walking down the street thinking "god she looks stupid".

JacquesHammer · 02/06/2018 08:23

I just don't get it
