Off and on on all sorts of different I've seen people do or don't use toilet brushes can we get a consensus here why do you use them or why don't you use it for the record I do use one.
I realise so some people think they're are germ riddled
However I have a effective and through way of cleaning them .
Opinions please . . . . . .

I don't, i have OCD about toilet germs, and there's no way i would be comfortable lifting a dripping brush out of the loo in case i accidentally drip the toilet water on the floor, catch the rim of the bowl and accidentally flick it everywhere etc. Also i can't flush without the lid down as the germs etc do get aerosolised and dispersed in about a 6 foot radius from the toilet, i'd feel literally showered in germs so "washing" the brush by flushing with it under the water is a no go.

I do also have IBS, and quite honestly, if there's a little bit of residue left stick a bit of loo roll over it, squirt on some bleach and flush, always works well enough. But then i generally don't care if theres a bit of visible mess in the loo after use, it is after all the whole purpose of a toilet, and within a few uses/flushes it will be gone. My dad is similar, sometimes not all "evidence" is gone after he uses the loo. Fact is, you don't really look IN a toilet, you sit on it, use it, and go, so obsessing over how clean it is, quite honestly is a bit weird. Then again, due to other aspects of my OCD we don't have guests, and i don't ever use anyone elses toilet, so this is purely how me and my dad are fine with it in our home with just the 2 of us.

Just pop it in the dishwasher to clean it Smile

Fattymcfaterson · 02/06/2018 00:29

I work as a cleaner, only 1 client didn't have a loo brush. I told them that they had to get one otherwise I was not cleaning their toilet. I'm not cleaning other peoples shit with my hands gloves or no gloves. It's just fucking disgusting!

springbluebells · 02/06/2018 00:58

We don't have one. It would get loaded up, slopped everywhere and would be another thing for me to tidy up. If anything gets left behind in the loo post-flush then we just bleach and it disappears with the next flush...

...feeling like this is too much info for this hour!

Just pop it in the dishwasher to clean it

For some (possibly illogical) reason, I find the idea of doing that absolutely disgusting.

kez1982 · 02/06/2018 06:37

Lakeland sell silicone toilet brushes, they have some that look like spatula so you can scrape it around the toilet bowl or ones with silicone bristles. They seem much easier to keep clean.

Usernameunknown2 · 02/06/2018 07:47

Not so sure its illogical time to not want traces of urine and faeces where you clean your plates, however hot and sudsy it may get.

Justgimmeit · 02/06/2018 08:56

We had a toilet brush before kids but after toddler dd tried to pick it we got rid and have never bought another. We have never suffered with limescale but I use the cistern blocks and bleach very regularly. Skids under the water line flush away without any interference and skids on the bowl are treated with bleach and a wad of loo roll which is then flushed.

9amTrain · 02/06/2018 09:07

I use them because I'm not getting my hand down there to wipe off the shit and bleach doesn't always work, especially if you're living with others it doesn't work fast enough.

SeagullsStopItNow · 02/06/2018 09:08

@charliecatpaws They’re only £16 in John Lewis I’ve just seen. Surely too good a bargain to pass up!

Under water skids don't go with bleach. They need a good scrub.

Grin at intragram poops

Oysterbabe · 02/06/2018 09:21

I have one because it's easy to clean the loo with them. I don't worry about germs 🤷. I keep my house reasonably clean but have fairly low standards. We're very rarely unwell and I'm certain illness has never been caused by my loobrush.

Half of mumsnet think you're a hobo if you don't do a daily zoflora enema.

RainbowFairiesHaveNoPlot · 02/06/2018 09:32

Aaah MN cleaning neuroticism at its finest.

I have a loo brush. I have a kid on movicol which makes things sloppier and stickier.

VogueVVague · 02/06/2018 09:59

TMI but:
I ise toilet paper to cushion the fall of any major dumpage that would result in shit at the bottom of the bowl, and skid marks on the way down i would remove with toilet paper by hand.

The idea of having a shitty brush standing in the toilet freaks me out.

Threefaries · 02/06/2018 10:04

No toilet brushes here. I have images of the children picking them up and wafting them about. This puts me out of my comfort zone. I clean my loos everyday. The loos regularly have the water removed and are given a good scrub. The seat and lid are steam cleaned and the hard to clean areas are blasted with the steam Nozzle thing.

firehousedog · 02/06/2018 12:52

I have a loo brush. Here's how I see it. Bleach goes down the loo. Leave for 20 mins. Any germs are all dead before the brush even enters the loo. Then go in with the brush. I think the u-bend and under the rim need a good scrub. After scrubbing i then leave the brush in the bleachy water in the bottom of the loo for another ten mins, then take it out and leave it to drip dry jammed under the closed toilet lid before putting back in the brush holder. If any germs survive that then fair play to them. I'm the only one who uses the brush so it ain't being improperly used either and it gets changed every month or two aswell.

Wheretheresawill1 · 02/06/2018 13:11

The one in work the other day was swimming in brown water in the holder

AlpacaLypse · 02/06/2018 13:24

I can't help thinking there's a dividing line between hard water and soft water areas in the loo brush wars debate. Hard water here, the 40p loo brush makes a far better job of dealing with lime flakes from under the rim after they've had a good overnight soak in Harpic Limescale than farting about with rubber gloves and a scrubby sponge. Rinse in the flush, shake dry, and replace in the holder which has bleachy water in it.

UrgentScurryfunge · 02/06/2018 13:39

It was me that said about the rust. The plastic internals that actually do the cleaning were fine and still in good nick from the anti-limescale bleach I use, just the outer metal casing has rusted and gone long past its best before date. I definitely don't apply that bit to the toilet Wink

TeasndToast · 02/06/2018 17:35

I think they look awful, they are disgusting and germ ridden. Brushes with shit and piss on them just sitting in a room? No thanks!

I bleach the loo daily and if there are any stains, more often. It seems to do the job, my toilet is always spotless.

MissMarplesKnitting · 02/06/2018 17:40

The silicone looblade ones will change your life. No drips, no grotty water, no bristles.

Loo cleaner or bleach, leave to kill everything, looblade. Job done.

OnlyTheWelshCanCwtch · 02/06/2018 17:48

I have loo brushes in both toilets
Children trained from early age to use them properly

I don't worry too much about germs and poo bits, they come up lovely in the dishwasher

flumpybear · 02/06/2018 17:49

I see them as a necessity! They clean the loo but yo just need to rinse it as the loo is flushing and dunk in bleach and rinse again - I hate walking into a loo and finding it's covered in someone else's poop 😱🤬🤮
