Evening Mn, Nc for a good reason.

I've just seen my ndn (2 doors down) on a news website at the free tommy Robinson March in Leeds. I feel sick, he's been nothing but polite whenever we have bumped into each other but my concern is this, my children are of mixed heritage, their dad is Asian. He employs said ndn. Wtf! Wwyd if you were in my position.

Troubledwater I'm in no way suggesting the EDL hold views that are anything other than disgusting and that when people present those views they should be challenged on them. If someone was openly racist in a work setting then they should absolutely be called up on it/sacked.

But in the instance of the OP seeing their ndn on a newsite - what do you suggest should be done?

BoneyBackJefferson · 01/06/2018 20:14

Troubledwater

So we’re no longer calling out racists? Ok.

How do you know that its racism and not someone that is believing the "freedom of speech" that its been sold as?

Troubledwater · 01/06/2018 20:19

Listener73 It’s hard to say, obviously nothing is black and white and I would hate for any harm to come towards OPs way but I would personally ignore him from now on and expect the employer (OPs ex? Sorry not sure) to challenge him directly. We don’t know where he stands on views like this though, even if against him. Many non-white people will ignore to keep the peace, which is understandable.

My annoyance was not aimed at you directly, it’s aimed at the legalities and how causal people in general can be about this kind of shit.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/06/2018 20:21

I'll stop saying hello and definitely won't be getting a Christmas card and his parcels taken in, but I don't see what else I could do.

Unless EDL is banned, then his views, as horrible as they are are his to have.

Troubledwater · 01/06/2018 20:22

Boney even if he’s not racist, which I’m pretty sure he claims not to be when it suits him Hmm majority of the thousands of people in this country who idolise the fucker, 100% are.

We need to challenge all of the support, and stamp it it out entirely.

crunchymint · 01/06/2018 20:25

Be careful OP. It is illegal to sack someone for their political views unless you can demonstrate it affects their work.

allofus · 01/06/2018 20:27

@Gizlotsmum I'm not sure of his contract as I only came to know he worked for ex when ex came to pick up dc and he mentioned so and so is your ndn.

@WeirdCatLady no, I don't expect he should get the sack, nor would ExP sack somebody just because I say so. But I'd like exP to be aware as he has many ethnic minority employees.

Troubledwater I understand and agree, I didn't think you were aiming at me. It is frustrating when people aren't challenged on their views.

The op asked wwyd and my response was in relation to that eg there is very little that can be done based on what we know. I think it would be tough for the employer to challenge him too based on the evidence as he hasn't done anything illegal and nothing that affects his work (as far as we know!).

Hopefully he'll say something that opens a conversation and allows him to be challenged and that will rethink his views.

BoneyBackJefferson · 01/06/2018 20:44

Troubledwater

We need to challenge all of the support, and stamp it it out entirely.

And how are you going to do that without seeming as bigoted as they are?

Right.

This is getting weird.

ShweShwe · 01/06/2018 20:50

Stop

The violent hooligan with criminal convictions is in jail for contempt of court.
I suggest you engage your brain and google what that means.
He is a fucking racist. He's an Islamophobic racist thug who preaches hate just as badly as any fundamentalist of ANY persuasion.
I'm embarrassed for you aligning yourself with scum like that but I suppose it's good - at least we know what you are now.

flashnazia · 01/06/2018 20:52

It all depends what the NDN is employed as.

VivaKondo · 01/06/2018 20:54

I dint think you can do anything.
But I would very careful and this will impact how I react to him I have to say.
If he looked aggressive in tv, then he is also likely to become aggressive around you.
He is supporting someone is very racist so I would assume he is very racist too.

VivaKondo · 01/06/2018 20:55

And YY about telling your ex. He needs to know to protect his own employees (in a Just in case way)

VivaKondo · 01/06/2018 20:59

Stop HE BROKE THE LAW

I dint care if there is free speech or not. But there is a law and he should be following it.
Whether he is receiving support form abroad on this petition doesn’t matter (very easy to make it look someone else has give;support + the way they will look at things will be different as their laws will be different).
If he has a problem with the LAW because it’s creating issue with free speech, then he shouod be tackling the law. Not taking it into his own hands and do what the fuck he wants because he has decided it’s right.
That’s not how you solve problem with free speech or with the law.

I wouldn’t be able to be friendly with anyone who is a racist or holds racist views.

Lanaa · 01/06/2018 21:08

Of course he's a fucking racist. He's abhorrent and all the people who agree with him/signed the petition/went on the match are just as bad. My 17 y/o cousin was racially abused in Leeds today. I bet a years wage it was an edl knuckle dragging cunt who did it.

OP I'd ensure that the ndn is sacked. Maybe not for political views - find another reason. I wouldn't let family money pay the wages of someone who supports such prejudice.

allofus · 01/06/2018 21:12

@greendale17 I don't think I can be friendly with someone with views like that either.

@Lanaa I'm so sorry to hear that, I have Fridays off but from our works group chat I understand there was a lot of car sharing going on as they didn't want anyone using public transport today. Sad that they didn't feel safe to be out alone.

Listener73 · 01/06/2018 21:15

StopCloudSeeding here is some evidence that Tommy Robinson is a racist. resistinghate.org/tommy-robinson-and-his-hate-tweets/

They're from his own Twitter so there's no media bias at play. There's plenty of other stuff out there too.

Notevilstepmother · 01/06/2018 21:19

I think unfortunately a lot of people have been sucked into believing poor Tommy’s story. Not all of them are racist, just daft enough to believe the story they have been told. He is very manipulative and plays the victim well.

The “oh I didn’t mean your family” type comments as mentioned above are also quite common.

I don’t think it would be right to sack him for being at a protest. I might mention it to your ex so he is aware and can ensure he and other employees are safe. However if he doesn’t do or say anything racist at work and he remains polite to you I think my answer to wwyd is nothing. Just ignore him. This will blow over at some point. Sometimes the best thing to do is ignore it.

Notevilstepmother · 01/06/2018 21:19

You don’t have to be friends with him.

SaltyPeanut · 01/06/2018 21:23

Is it a still image you saw him in?
If he was in a video, was there sound?
Was he holding a placard or similar with a written message of support?
Are you 100 percent certain it was him?

He could claim he was there shouting down the supporters of this Tommy person. You would not be able to prove he was there as a supporter if there is no moving image with sound or a placard.

My DH appeared in a picture of a march by one of these groups once. He was on his way back from work and had to pass through them to get to the bus station. He despises everything they stand for but onlookers may have thought him one of them.

You're probably right but be careful is all I'm saying.
