How much do you have saved

Sergio4 · 31/05/2018 23:20

And how much of your salary do you save every month?

I have about a thousand saved and save around a few hundred a month as I am looking for a better job

OP posts:
Cailleach · 31/05/2018 23:23

About £35k. I try and save around 20% a month.

starryeyed19 · 31/05/2018 23:26

Absolutely nothing

pinkginanyone · 31/05/2018 23:29

I save about £700 per month. I’ve cut right back to do that though. I want to buy my first home.... I’ve about a year to go before I’ll havenwough saved!

Rocinante1 · 31/05/2018 23:38

I put £1000 into a savings account, £1000 into my pension and £500 into each of the kids accounts. I should have started doubling those amounts last year, but I didn't change any of the standing orders so the rest has just built up in my normal account - around £180000.

doomRaider · 01/06/2018 02:35

Liquid, about £700k.

We spend most of my salary and save DH's. We own our house and a few others out right and have investments elsewhere.

I wonder about those people who save nothing. Who do they expect to look after them when they stop work?

Poorlooloo · 01/06/2018 02:45

I earn 3300 a month, inc 500 additional pension payment

1200 in to joint bank account for household bills inc mortgage

600 in to my savings account

200 in to high risk savings account

The rest for me, phone, outings etc

Celticlassie · 01/06/2018 02:48

Has it occurred to you that some people worry about what they're going to to when they stop work, but still can't afford to save?

doomRaider · 01/06/2018 02:55

@Celticlassie

No. I just think they're being irresponsible.

MerryShitmas · 01/06/2018 02:57

DoonRaider
Spoken like a true snob.
I have fairly decent pension provision, but I can recognise that if you're struggling to eat or heat your home, what will happen to you 30+ years down the line just isn't a priority.

Celticlassie · 01/06/2018 03:02

But literally, no extra money. Enough money to heat their home, feed and clothes themselves and their kids, and that's it. Do you understand that some people are forced to live like that? It's not irresponsibility that means they're not saving - it is that there is no money to be saved.

doomRaider · 01/06/2018 03:04

@MerryShitmas

'Snob' doesn't mean what you think it means.

user1470964247 · 01/06/2018 03:11

About a million in cash and investments. Mortgage on both properties paid off.

RedDwarves · 01/06/2018 03:20

Save about $3,500 per month (AUD).

Fortunate to own one house outright, which is rented out (inheritance), and used cash inheritance to purchase the house we live in (have a mortgage).

9.5% is automatically contributed into my superannuation/pension account by my employer. In addition to this, I salary sacrifice a further 3.5%. DH works at a university and his employer contributes 17% into his superannuation.

We don't spend very much per month. We pay our mortgage, have a grocery budget, pay off any credit card debt at the time we get paid, pay insurances, electricity, gas etc. fuel costs a fair bit where we live, so that is another expense. But we don't spend much on things. We only go out a couple of times a month to eat, might go to the movies once a month etc. Don't buy daily coffees, don't smoke, don't drink etc.

DoomRaider was a bit mean!
But it proves that MN has users from all walks of life.

I do wonder how some people will manage later in life with no savings but I do know there are people around here who have to decide where to put their money each month - rent or food. It's an awful situation.

My feelings exactly and I am amazed that anyone would post that they had a million in cash savedHmm

user1470964247 · 01/06/2018 03:40

Why? I'm not in the UK and you don't know me.
Lots of people have a hell of a lot more money than me, too.

doomRaider · 01/06/2018 03:46

"My feelings exactly and I am amazed that anyone would post that they had a million in cash saved"

Yes, you'd assume that someone with that amount of cash would have the intelligence to invest it.

user1470964247 · 01/06/2018 03:51

Hence the words "cash and investments" in my first post, had anybody paid attention. Never did I say a million in cash.
Cash is for what I might need now, investments for the future.

KanielOutis · 01/06/2018 03:57

£193. I have a mortgage and pay into a pension so I see both of those as savings. I have no unsecured debt and don't struggle to pay the bills so consider myself well off.

MrJohnReese · 01/06/2018 05:22

Some real ignorance from a couple of people on this thread as usual. As a pp said, some people can literally feed and clothe the family with nothing left over, and some not even that! Saving is the last thing on their minds.

Most of my life I've had nothing saved, at one point I had managed to hide a few grand away which helped me leave an abusive relationship (although I still got lumbered with £10,000+ of his debt). Now I have about £1500 but only because we got made homeless last year and because of situation (no real rent payment atm) am stashing £200 a month. Having said that I buy literally nothing for myself - don't smoke or drink. Don't wear make up, clothes, shoes etc bought on an essential only basis.

I do have a pension though (NHS)

Life can be tough sometimes and the cycle can be hard to break. The more money you have the easier it is to make more!

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 01/06/2018 05:28

£20k in savings. Some of that is for the dc.

Save about £750 a month and overpay mortgage by £250 as well.

Bonjourmonami73 · 01/06/2018 05:34

God I hate these kind of threads. Guaranteed to make you feel inadequate! I can’t save at the moment as just about getting by and trying to raise my family. Pre kids I saved 20k but husband lost his job so we lived on it for a while. Life chucks unexpected stuff at you.

TTCI · 01/06/2018 05:37

@doomRaider Not everyone is in your position. I don't think you realise how ignorant you sound...

Sleephead1 · 01/06/2018 05:37

we only have a few hundred at the moment as we just bought our first property so we had more saved but used it on buying and moving / solicitor costs. So we are starting again at the moment we save about 150 a month and a little bit into my son's saving account. We both have a pension. it's amazing to see the amount some people have saved I know we will never get to the million mark but I'm hoping we can build up a decent stash. I think it's unfair to say it's irresponsible for some people not to save as sometimes people just can't due to circumstances out of their control my friend became a single parent and ex non UK tax payer so no child mantinence and debt from solicitors fees fighting to sort finances it's impossible for her to save at the moment.
