How much do you have saved

And how much of your salary do you save every month?

I have about a thousand saved and save around a few hundred a month as I am looking for a better job

MissBax · 01/06/2018 05:39

Wow!
I have £100 saved in my cash builder account for spending money when I go on holiday in 2 weeks.

BlueandBlack · 01/06/2018 05:39

I'd be suspicious about anyone who says they have £1m in cash.

I'm pretty comfortable and know a lot of very high wealth people. Not one of them would leave that amount of money as cash. Seems odd for it not to be invested somehow.

Booie09 · 01/06/2018 05:43

Is this thread here just to make people feel shitty because they can't afford to save some money!!

ScaredPAD · 01/06/2018 05:43

No pensions to speak of. Currently overdrawn.

I'd love our situation to be different. Yes it scares me.

user1470964247 · 01/06/2018 06:24

FFS, I didn't say I had a million in cash. I wish people would RTFT properly.

Narkle · 01/06/2018 06:24

Enough to cover one or two unexpected bills, not enough to retire.

I save money into accounts I cannot access other than directly through my bank for things like car, beauty (i.e. clothes, shoes, glasses, teeth), holiday and rainy day fund.

I earn an okay salary, but live quite frugally to be able to afford that.

I also save every penny I find thrown away in the streets throughout a year. Then buy a meal on it at the end. It's amazing what people just drop and ignore; it really ammasses to quite a bit.

CantankerousCamel · 01/06/2018 06:27

We save about £200 a month, more would be nice but we were poor for a very long time and have lots of updating of the property, sorting of things to do.

Also a fair whack of debt to pay off.

MsHopey · 01/06/2018 06:36

Nothing :(
DH and myself have always been in minimum wage jobs or just above. Think supermarket jobs, we're never going to have any real saving tbh. It's awful and means we struggle alot if an unexpected bill turns up.
We're only 26 so pretty much assume they'll just worm us to death by the time we're really old, so not too worried about retiring at the moment, more worried about paying the monthly bills.

vampirethriller · 01/06/2018 06:36

I can save about £20 a week if the big bills don't need paying. Lost my job and I'm pregnant and yes I do worry, all day every day and in my bloody sleep I worry. Mostly any spare money is going on baby things.

MsHopey · 01/06/2018 06:37

*work us to death!

DustyMaiden · 01/06/2018 06:44

A lot. There have been times in my life I could barely afford to eat. Things improved massively when childcare stopped, got promoted, overpaid mortgage, cleared all debt.
Those struggling, it does get easier for most.

Zoflorabore · 01/06/2018 06:51

Nothing here either.

Just about keeping head above water so savings seem a distant dream!

Flaminglingos · 01/06/2018 07:05

Not everyone will post their bank balances accurately on an online forum. I know it's anonymous but I take these threads with a pinch of salt. I wish I had more saved but I don't and I do worry about what would happen in an emergency.

Polarbearflavour · 01/06/2018 07:09

Between us we save around £2k a month. £70k in savings.

adaline · 01/06/2018 07:11

About 10k between us at the moment. We have a small mortgage and both pay into pensions.

Peterrabbitscarrots · 01/06/2018 07:12

About £20k. I have a mortgage so would rather pay that off then start serious saving. I will also have a decent NHS pension though

Frosty66612 · 01/06/2018 07:12

I have about 13k in savings (most of that was given to me as inheritance when my grandma died though).

My partner has about 15k in his savings.

Up until about 2 years ago (I’m 30 now) I had no savings and a lot of debt. I’ve managed to clear it all now but my 20s were a struggle and I was constantly worrying about paying all my bills. It’s a nice feeling being more financially secure for once in my life.

FriendlyOcelot · 01/06/2018 07:14

I love the clamour of certain posters to tell us all how wealthy they are! Usually you find a bunch of them on the holidays threads too.

Flaminglingos · 01/06/2018 07:14

@MsHopey is there any chance either of you can retrain & get more qualifications at night school? 26 seems so young to be permanently stuck in a low income job without anything better on the horizon. Sorry to go off topic, have a look on the mumsnet jobs website & guardian cv site.

BoogleMcGroogle · 01/06/2018 07:15

I agree with flamingoes that some poet might well be of dubious accuracy. And some people like nothing more than to ( believe that) they are making strangers on the internet feel smaller and poorer than themselves.

For what it's worth, and I hope that this will give some comfort to panicked posters, we weren't able to save much until recently, because of childcare and part-time work and now we are able to save ( invest) more, as things started looking up financially.

FriendlyOcelot · 01/06/2018 07:16

(^^that applies more to the first page btw. The more realistic figures come along at a more leisurely pace!)

TidyDancer · 01/06/2018 07:17

About £35k I reckon. Fortunate that ILs have helped us a lot in the past and we've been able to save that much because they've paid off our mortgage.

There absolutely are many people out there who don't have a bean to spare at the end of the month. I was one of them for a long time. It is ignorant and offensive to suggest they are just irresponsible when they are completely unable to save.

MegEmski · 01/06/2018 07:21

Enough for our house deposit and husband's next tax bill - once those are paid there will be a small cushion in our savings account (1k ish) but we will be saving reasonable chunk a month hopefully

But I am about to start Mat Leave

I get a decent pension with work and we have a '5 year plan' worked out for renting / buying another house to provide another source of income along side self employed DH

Doobydoo · 01/06/2018 07:22

doomraider the people who will look after you when you can't work are the people who are unable to save anything(very little) as their pay is shit!

MsHopey · 01/06/2018 07:23

@Flaminglingos hey, thanks for the concern. I thought most people would just slate me for planning my life a bit shit. I have been looking at night school hairdressing courses. Not even sure what the income is, but I love hair and make up and think it would definitely fulfil me more than stacking shelves. My husband has always wanted to be a personal trainer, again, something you can do in part time courses. But it's getting the money together to actually afford the courses.
