Nanny and maternity leave

AIBU - Nanny has been in my family’s employment for two years. One boy aged 2. New baby on ththe way. We don’t feel we can justify paying our nanny for the year I plan to go on mat leave and I have family who can help out for free.

AIBU to ask Nanny to work one day a week as a retainer until the year is up? Obviously she would be free to find work in this time.

@LifeBeginsAtGin 6k a month 😲? I'm in the wrong job (scrolls through Job Section 😂)

I did think saying 'help to raise' the child was an odd way for a mother to talk about childcare tbh. Should have clicked that it was a reverse then.

JellyBears · 31/05/2018 22:06

@kaytee87 actually not really, those were my bosses exact words....a nanny does help raise a child. That doesn’t take away from the mother or the father. It takes village as they say.

My boss said we hope you’ll be back after year to help raise the next one.

Honestly, I wouldn't take it. I don't know where you live but I know around here nurseries fill up very quickly - I had DD down for her spot when I was 6 months pregnant with her. Childminders and nannies get snapped up so quickly.

Mrsmadevans · 31/05/2018 22:18

I think being a nanny as a job per say is not long term and you need to be very flexible. However l don't mean being used like this , l mean only being employed by ppl until they don't need you anymore not being kept on a leash until they want to pay you. I don't think they can be that naice a family by the sounds of them.

unfortunateevents · 31/05/2018 22:18

This is an annoying thread. OP, your employers are being unreasonable so I have no idea why you felt the need to post this as a reverse, everybody would have been in agreement with you that this is not normal or reasonable. Now you have a thread where people have responded, you have clarified that it is a reverse, several people have failed to read all your posts and are still posting as if you were the parent so half the posts make no sense - and now you think you can delete the thread just because you don't like the way it's going! That's not the way MN works.

JellyBears · 31/05/2018 22:33

Ok consider me told off lol Hmm I’m a grown adult so your lecture is not really bothering me..I actually asked for it to be deleted due to privacy concerns etc I could careless if ppl are upset I posted s reverse who cares.

I would think most families can’t justify the costs of paying a nanny full time while they’re on a year’s mat leave. Does this sort of situation not come up quite often?

I don’t think they’re being cheeky to propose the option of one day a week. It’s your choice whether to accept or not.

The only way they’re being unreasonable is if they are not giving you a decent notice period to decide, or if they refuse redundancy pay if you decline the change in working hours.

oblada · 01/06/2018 19:30

What lofty says. I can't imagine how anyone on mat leave would justify a nanny unless they get v good contractual pay. It seems sensible to look at other options.

Racecardriver · 01/06/2018 19:33

If I was your nanny I would just leave. Either be honest with her and say we want you to stay but can't afford to pay you. Sorry but we have to make you redundant but we would love to have you back after ml if you are still looking for a job then and want to come back. Otherwise just suck it up and pay her.
