Bought a print I love, DH is worried it's racist

Saw it on IG and loved it. Purchased it for the laundry room corridor, but it's arrived and DH is a little worried it might be racist. I can't see how. To me, it's a mum finding a few minutes of calm in the chaos and I love her babies little sleeping face.

We are white Jewish, for cultural context.

What do you think?

QuackPorridgeBacon, continue to dig your heels in. To what end? They are black but otherwise normal. The but means a lot and says a lot about your thinking. If you cannot see anything wrong with what you've said, then by all means carry on as you are.

Black but okay, black but pretty, black but normal, Black but a human, black but... etc.

petrolpump28 · 05/06/2018 12:50

As long as they don't speak with a strong accent or run around waving a stick I'm sure it's fine. Or exhibit tribal markings, whatever that is.

Bluntness100 · 05/06/2018 13:11

I think folks should stop accusing each other of being racist on this thread, it's a bit bonkers.

Quack, I think as you've seen when you come on a thread and accuse people of being racist and sexist as you have done, you need to accept people won't like it, especially if they clearly aren't. As such, you can expect to get it back by the shit load. You left yourself wide open to it.

I'm guessing you don't like it anymore than the folks you accused.

findingmyfeet12 · 05/06/2018 13:17

Unintentional racist language or bias should be called out. How else can we change?

findingmyfeet12 · 05/06/2018 13:19

Large gold earrings don't say wealthy to me. I agree that in my experience most people I know who babywear with that type of sling are relatively wealthy (wealthier than I am anyway!)

RoseWhiteTips · 05/06/2018 13:20

Accusing people of this that or the otherism, is something at which “keyboard warriors” excel. All it does is make THEM look stupid.

RoseWhiteTips · 05/06/2018 13:25

The way people guesstimate about all sorts of inconsequential rubbbish is really laughable. If you think this picture is proper “art”, then discuss what makes it so: discuss it in terms of composition, style, theme and so on. To do what some of you are doing is irrelevant.

Notintheframe · 05/06/2018 13:30

Rosewhitetip, who ordained you God to decide for others what is relevant or irrelevant or whether or not people should highlight problematic issues with the language used and assumptions made by others?

Yeah sure, you might want to consider these discussions as irrelevant and you may prefer to sweep things under the carpet, mind your own business rather than confront difficult issues. That's your prerogative.

RoseWhiteTips · 05/06/2018 13:31

Eh?

Bluntness100 · 05/06/2018 13:32

Sure it should be called out but the thread is really now just become a bunfight of everyone accusing everyone of being racist and sexist. For several pages now.

I very much doubt there is either on here. Yes maybe there is sub conscious bias, or maybe it's just poor wording.

It feels like it's been done for the wrong intentions.

RoseWhiteTips · 05/06/2018 13:32

“ordained”?
“God”

Am I missing a religious connection?🤫

Battleax · 05/06/2018 13:35

Completely agree bluntness.

Notintheframe · 05/06/2018 13:44

That is patently not true Bluntness and the only people who appear to making these claims are those who have been called out for the bias things they have said. But I get why they want to close the conversation quickly.

Yes Rosewhitetip, "ordained". Did that make you reach for your smelling salt? But if you feel slight peeved by that, imagine how a black person would feel by some of the things said here.

findingmyfeet12 · 05/06/2018 13:48

Who says someone's comments on a painting are "irrelevant"? Art is hardly an exact science. I'm not an art critic so I'll discuss it at my level. If you think that's irrelevant or beneath you, don't engage.

As for poor wording - that is part of the bias.

petrolpump28 · 05/06/2018 13:48

What is other ism

Notintheframe · 05/06/2018 14:00

Classic minimising and dismissing the views of others. It's not bias but just poor wording is the excuse. Nothing wrong here, the problem is with those who are at the receiving end.

Bluntness100 · 05/06/2018 14:01

For goodness sake notintheframe. No one said it wasn't bias, it was said it could be either.

Honestly why do you just want to fight with people?

findingmyfeet12 · 05/06/2018 14:04

I genuinely think that the majority population can never really understand what it's like to be from a minority that is saddled with negative stereotypes.

I think the minimising is a combination of lack of understanding (give over it's not that bad, stop being so sensitive) and embarrassment at being caught perpetuating bias (whether intentional or not).

Notintheframe · 05/06/2018 14:07

Bluntness you seem to be angry. I am just responding and do not see it as fighting. Why do you see it as a fight?

Shumpalumpa · 05/06/2018 15:30

Not stand alone either, I mean with traditional dress (basically naked etc) and tribal markings. This print has none of that so how are people seeing a tribal African woman who is poor?

Quack, mathanxiety 's post didn't even mention tribes so why are you bringing up tribes and accents.

Bluntness100 · 05/06/2018 16:21

I'm genuinely not angry Confused

I see it as a fight because everyone is being rather horrible to each other, all calling everyone racists, sexists and arguing. The painting seems to be now moot.

It's all about everyone saying.,,

You're a racist
No you're a racist
No you're a racist
Well you're sexist
No you're sexist
You're sexist and racist
No you're sexist and racist
Ad nauseaum.

Sigh.

Notintheframe · 05/06/2018 16:40

Bluntness that's your interpretation and it's one that I do not share. I have not seen this fight as you put in. You may wish to deflect attention away from the substantive issues here by playing some sort of pseudo victim, claiming that those who are calling out biases are fighting. By so doing, you hope to make them a problem rather than focus on the real problem ie, unconscious bias and yes, casual racism.

I will call out these things wherever I see them. You can label it as fighting. You can label it whatever you like. You do not have to participate in the "fight".

findingmyfeet12 · 05/06/2018 16:53

NewYear can you quit beating about the bush and tell us what you actually think 😂

I wouldn't hang it in my house either. I just don't like it very much.
