Bought a print I love, DH is worried it's racist

Saw it on IG and loved it. Purchased it for the laundry room corridor, but it's arrived and DH is a little worried it might be racist. I can't see how. To me, it's a mum finding a few minutes of calm in the chaos and I love her babies little sleeping face.

We are white Jewish, for cultural context.

What do you think?

Uyulala, sorry that was a crap move on my part. I can't keep up!

Namechangedname · 03/06/2018 16:51

Maybe the jewellery? Or the tatoos? I think they point to the stereotype “exotic” perhaps

Fair enough 😊 I have tattoos and wear a lot of tacky jewelry (love my bling Grin)

RoseWhiteTips · 03/06/2018 16:51

Uyulala

Gross

Well it's a good thing I wear clothes when I visit other people then, isn't it?

period. It’s not good and can dry you out which is harmful. I’m cringing just thinking of pulling out an almost dry tampon.

Thanks for the advice. I've never had a problem with a dry vagina though. Plus I hate wearing pads etc. And underwear.

Ewwwwww🤮

Uyulala · 03/06/2018 16:53

How childish.

RoseWhiteTips · 03/06/2018 16:54

Is “trope” the word of the day?

Uyulala · 03/06/2018 16:54

@namechangedname

No problem, easily done!

RoseWhiteTips · 03/06/2018 16:55

Adults can puke, too. Perhaps you might offer too much information on that?

Battleax · 03/06/2018 16:56

Rose apart from your commitment to dash to any thread about race and be a PITA, what do you think you’re adding here?

RoseWhiteTips · 03/06/2018 16:58
Hmm
ChardonnaysPrettySister · 03/06/2018 17:02

Sorry I unwittingly caused all the misunderstanding.

Namechangedname · 03/06/2018 17:08

ChardonnaysPrettySister I'm not sure I helped Blush

findingmyfeet12 · 03/06/2018 17:13

I have read some of the thread not all.

It does seem like people are backtracking quite a bit here. I don't believe anyone who says they would have thought she was poor regardless of her skin colour.

I don't like the painting and wouldn't hang it in my house but to me it's showing a powerful woman who is managing various tasks simultaneously. The nudity makes her "real" because she doesn't have a perfect catwalk model figure.

Bluntness100 · 03/06/2018 17:15

Ok back on track.

What makes her seem powerful to you? I don't see women doing rhe laundry as powerful. Whether it's a stereotype or not, I simply don't see someone doing household chores, clothed or in thr buff, as powerful.

findingmyfeet12 · 03/06/2018 17:19

Powerful because she's doing various jobs simultaneously (and successfully) I think that's what it's trying to show.

I don't have an issue with it being a woman. I do housework and read (I don't have children) so in that sense it reflects my reality.

I'm sure you don't see it as powerful but we all interpret things differently and who is to say one persons interpretation is better than another's?

QuackPorridgeBacon · 03/06/2018 17:25

I asked my partner what he thought of the print last night. He just looked uninterested and said he sees a woman multi tasking and reading the manual lol he didn’t think of race at all, which I thought he may have done since where we live can be classed as a bit racist, or at least it was in his day.

Battleax · 03/06/2018 17:27

Nice.

I don’t believe you when you say you perceive her as powerful. So there we are.

findingmyfeet12 · 03/06/2018 17:28

Great argument Battleax GrinGrin

Battleax · 03/06/2018 17:29

Exactly.

petrolpump28 · 03/06/2018 17:30

does anybody monitor this conversation?

petrolpump28 · 03/06/2018 17:31

quack....what is a racist place please? totally confused.

findingmyfeet12 · 03/06/2018 17:32

My perceiving her as powerful is hardly provocative. Why on earth would it warrant lying about? I'm no art critic and it's subjective so I'm happy if anyone disagrees.

Those who made assumptions of poverty have realised that this could potentially be seen as racist so have an interest in backtracking.

Bluntness100 · 03/06/2018 17:35

No, I'm not sure either. Some people like to virtue signal. To say the right thing. They can't be honest. Even with strangers on the internet.

Battleax · 03/06/2018 17:36

My perceiving her as powerful is hardly provocative. Why on earth would it warrant lying about?

Why would I bother inventing that I perceive her as poor? (Maybe because I’m projecting a bit, I don’t know TBH.)

Why would any of us bother making up these fairly tame personal projections?

I know there are one or two fringe posters determined to stir, but most people find it interesting and are just having a conversation.

RoseWhiteTips · 03/06/2018 17:36

Great argument Battleax

🤣

Battleax · 03/06/2018 17:37

There’s a case in point.
