Bought a print I love, DH is worried it's racist

Saw it on IG and loved it. Purchased it for the laundry room corridor, but it's arrived and DH is a little worried it might be racist. I can't see how. To me, it's a mum finding a few minutes of calm in the chaos and I love her babies little sleeping face.

We are white Jewish, for cultural context.

What do you think?

Thank you Jamie.

Uyulala · 03/06/2018 14:04

Do you put a little towel on furniture before you sit down if you are wandering around naked?

Well, I don't wear underwear to bed Confused I usually have my dressing gown at hand and have been known to place it on leather sofa before sitting down as it feels very cold! Blush anyway...

Ekphrasis · 03/06/2018 14:05

I used a sling naked top half for skin to skin and I know many who have done when baby has a fever.

As far as I can make out this was a commission? So there's no need to query it; she must have given permission for more copies?

I do have an art back ground and I do get the issues that can occur in visual arts but I don't think there needs to be any worry here.

Also, when a baby is that tiny Mum is likely to be on maternity leave and more likely to be by the washing machine than her partner who may be at work or with the other siblings.. I certainly am as post section I can do laundry but still but quite ready to do other things that Dh is covering.

No. Why would you?

LoislovesStewie · 03/06/2018 14:12

Hygiene.

Bluntness100 · 03/06/2018 14:15

No. Why would you?

For the same reason people tend to change their knickers daily. Basic hygiene, Hmm

Uyulala · 03/06/2018 14:19

Really if I thought I was leaking that badly i'd just wear a small tampon

Ekphrasis · 03/06/2018 14:23

This thread is batshit crazy.

I've just looked at the artist's instagram and I like the drawings.

I can't believe the flack she got for her pre baby self portrait.

If anyone has read the food of love (about breastfeeding) many of the drawings remind me of the those, which are semi cartoon in character, a little like these.

When you are black, your story gets written for you; either through perception or stereotypes.

When you are white, you are neutral, like a blank canvas. And you get to write your own story.

MiggeldyHiggins · 03/06/2018 14:42

Whats unhygenic about a womans body? Have you signed up to the ewww...women are disgusting leaky things trope?

MiggeldyHiggins · 03/06/2018 14:44

Seems to be something in this...lots of posters writing (racist) stories for who this woman must be, just because she's not like them.

I see myself in her.

Bluntness100 · 03/06/2018 14:52

Well just like men, women have arses and they tend to sweat a bit, hence why nudists camps wish people to put cloths down before they sit.

Seriously are yiu just looking to fight with someone? Why don't you go an shout in an empty room instead of posting shite all over the internet waiting for someone to bite. You're just making yOurself look silly.. 🤣

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 03/06/2018 14:54

I’m white but not neutral or indeed a blank canvas.

What an odd statement.

MiggeldyHiggins · 03/06/2018 14:54

Speak for yourself.

are you new to aibu?

I happen to be one of the few people on this thread making sense, and not being a racist sexist asshat. You should try and follow my lead instead of trying to run me off....

Battleax · 03/06/2018 15:05

I happen to be one of the few people on this thread making sense, and not being a racist sexist asshat.

If you do say so yourself Smile

It’s more constructive to say specifically which bits you perceive as racist. Then a conversation can be had and everyone can debate and learn.

Making sweeping statements that “I’m one of the few people on the thread not being sexist or racist” is just a broad brush silencing technique and doesn’t move is any further forward.

Battleax · 03/06/2018 15:06

Us, not is.

QuackPorridgeBacon · 03/06/2018 15:12

From this thread I’ve noticed a lot of people see black and assume or associate with African national geographic tribal stuff. Why? I like learning about different tribes etc and find how they live fascinating and love the simplicity, but I don’t look at every black person going and assume that. Why would I? So I don’t do it for art either unless heavily implied which it wasn’t in this print. I don’t look at my friends or past sexual partners as tribal just based on their skin, that would be fucking weird.

Me, too miggledy. I cancelled the black, baby, naked, out because she represents me. After that, I had little else to go on.

Namechangedname · 03/06/2018 15:24

ChardonnaysPrettySister but people are generally less likely to stereotype you. It may be 'odd' to you. That's a good thing, trust me.

I wonder if anyone will admit to seeing stereotypes in theses images?

QuackPorridgeBacon · 03/06/2018 15:37

SmileEachDay I see stereotypes in the image of the white woman, based on her clothing and hair I assume she’s from a sexist era. Not sure about any stereotypes in the other image.

petrolpump28 · 03/06/2018 15:37

Sadly Phillip green, the Beckhams or Manchester United or City got back to me. Prince Charles showed an interest though.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 03/06/2018 15:42

blank canvas. A person or thing that has nothing of substance or permanence within or imprinted upon him, her, or it, such that it can be easily filled with entirely new things. Refers to a painter's canvas that has yet to be painted on.

That’s a good thing?
