Bought a print I love, DH is worried it's racist

Saw it on IG and loved it. Purchased it for the laundry room corridor, but it's arrived and DH is a little worried it might be racist. I can't see how. To me, it's a mum finding a few minutes of calm in the chaos and I love her babies little sleeping face.

We are white Jewish, for cultural context.

What do you think?

petrolpump - do you feel differently about the naked white woman with the baby strapped to her back?

TheDowagerCuntess · 01/06/2018 20:15

The OP seems to be long gone...

bobblyflower · 01/06/2018 20:17

If people think it's racist/ sexist, it says more about them than the print.

And for the people who interpret the image as being a woman who has no clothes to wear because the baby was sick on all of them due to their reflux, she used to have more clothes but she got into Marie Kondo and got rid of most of them, in fact that's a Marie Kondo book she's reading right there, what does that say about them they're a bit dim

Carycach100 · 01/06/2018 20:25

is it more racist to interpret the picture as 1)being racist, or 2)not being racist.
There is an argument for number 2.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/06/2018 20:29

I wonder if the posters who say this really believe it or are just saying it for argument's sake.

hmcAsWas · 01/06/2018 20:32

So I can't face 22 pages. What was the consensus - racist or not racist?

My personal view is that there is some over thinking going on, and in context (look at all the similar images on the website that the OP has linked to) it is not remotely racist

MollyDaydream · 01/06/2018 20:34

The consensus is: if you see an impoverished African villager it's racist.
If you see a Danish hippy mum it isn't.

petrolpump28 · 01/06/2018 20:58

Molly feel free to share those images?

OP disappears. Danish artist quids in.

TheDowagerCuntess · 01/06/2018 20:59

In fact, this thread seems to be divided between people who think it's 'lovely' and relate to it on a very basic level...

...and those who find it uncomfortable because it makes them think, and perhaps confront un/conscious cultural bias and/or sexism/classism.

petrolpump28 · 01/06/2018 21:00

oh yeah the woman with the kid ironically stuck on her back , with the trendy purple thing going on?

petrolpump28 · 01/06/2018 21:01

the difference being er a wee bit of history.

TheDowagerCuntess · 01/06/2018 21:03

My personal view is that there is some over thinking going on,

Some people like to think. Likewise, we could say there is some under thinking going on Wink

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/06/2018 21:04

It makes me uncomfortable.

So is it because I find it racist or because I have an unconscious racist bias? I don't know. And I still don't thing its art, it's too transparently stereotypical for that.

But not for a moment do I buy the "Oh she just ran out of clothes and is comfy reading there" whataboutery.

MollyDaydream · 01/06/2018 21:11

petrolpump, not sure what is ironic? She is just midway through strapping the baby on her back.

Tink2007 · 01/06/2018 21:14

Is there a link to the other pieces?

TheDowagerCuntess · 01/06/2018 21:14

Love this, and it pretty much sums up the under thinking (and yet twisting and turning to justify) going on in some quarters.

And to add, the sick that covered everything, even her underwear, was magically repelled from the sling, due to the yoga hippy crystals hanging out of sight.

... or ... she has loads of spare slings natch, but no spare undies.

MollyDaydream · 01/06/2018 21:15

To be fair most sling owners do have huge collections...

TheDowagerCuntess · 01/06/2018 21:17

But next to no knickers.

sleepingdragons · 01/06/2018 21:18

Tink here's the artist's website. (And they're all naked!!)

www.yogaprints.dk

Sounds about right to me Grin

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/06/2018 21:19

Yes, and they have a book conveniently sitting on the washing machine waiting to be read when they are in the altogether.

MollyDaydream · 01/06/2018 21:20

A phone would have been more accurate than a book.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 01/06/2018 21:21

I think we should focus on the book, instead of the washing machine.

What does that say about us?

sleepingdragons · 01/06/2018 21:23

The website describes itself as "BODY POSITIVE YOGA ART CELEBRATING BODIES IN ALL SHAPES, COLORS, AGES AND SIZES."

Here are some of the other pics.

ragged · 01/06/2018 21:23

These are same sorts of slings as in the pic, only diff is worn by (seemingly) white folk. Easy to find lots similar pics online. I can't see that style of baby sling as belonging to any specific ethic group.
