Good cheap birthday present for a 9 year old....

Ideas?

There's a party coming up - 4 boys birthdays together in one.

Usually I spend about £10 on presents but this time I just can't, especially as I need to buy 4 presents. That's £40 plus cards.....

Ideas for cheap but good presents for 9 year old boys?

How close are you to the boys? Are they brothers? If the latter you could get one slightly bigger present for them all to share. If you aren’t that close, a box of chocolates each is fine.

User467 · 31/05/2018 20:47

I bought jenga for bday presents today.....£6.

bitzy12 · 31/05/2018 20:48

No they are all from school. Ds doesn't even play with them tbh but he really wants to go to the party

Does your son know all 4 of the children? Has he been invited by all of them or just 1?
If finances are tight I wouldn’t (and haven’t in the past) but presents for a kid I don’t know just because they are sharing a party with DS’s friend.

Mammalamb · 31/05/2018 20:49

Buy cards from the card factory! Sometimes they do a 10 cards for £1 deal

Allthewaves · 31/05/2018 20:49

My boys love nerf - u can get fake ones from tesco cheap and they are really sturdy

Myotherusernameisbest · 31/05/2018 20:49

Asda have nerf gun pistols half price at the moment, £4.50 each. Are they gun kind of children though! You may find yourself on a thread on mn about the parent who (OMG shock) bought a kid a nerf gun so might be risky!

WittyJack · 31/05/2018 20:49

Have a look on the wicked uncle website - they have all sorts and you can search by age/sex so it's easy. Worth bookmarking for Christmas etc too!

One of the most popular presents I've ever bought was from there and about £6 - a sticky rubber poo..... that kid got loads of presents, but it was the poo that he chose to take out to his birthday dinner!! Confused

ICantCopeAnymore · 31/05/2018 20:49

There are fab tins in the book section of Tesco. They have Minecraft, Spiderman etc. They contain a book and stickers and some other bits and are a fiver, which is reasonable as the tin is a nice keepsake.

3boys3dogshelp · 31/05/2018 20:50

Ah cross posted sorry

3boys3dogshelp · 31/05/2018 20:51

Yep Nerf guns are a massive hit with mine.

Raver84 · 31/05/2018 21:30

The works often have some good things for less than a fiver like make volcano lava etc which some boys in my dd class loves unsure how grateful mum was however ...

bitzy12 · 31/05/2018 22:18

Thank you all, all good options! I'll go to the supermarkets in the morning.

All these boys are in his class but because ds is autistic, he doesn't get invited to much so this is a big deal to him.

I understand why parents to joint parties, I did one for dd last year with another child....but 4 is a bit much to buy for lol.

I do like the nerf gun idea but yep....don't want to be overstepping the mark lol 😂

blaaake · 31/05/2018 23:04

Guns*. I'll leave now Grin

Butterflykissess · 31/05/2018 23:06

No idea on presents as mine are quite a bit younger but Argos do 2 for £15 on toys not much cheaper but less than £40

Passthecake30 · 31/05/2018 23:08

£5 note and a box of maltesars?

Kolo · 31/05/2018 23:10

If they’re anything like my son’s friends (he’s 9) they’re all playing Fortnite. I got some recent birthday boys a fortnite tshirt from Amazon. I got this one www.amazon.co.uk/TEEZ-Fortnite-Legend-Childrens-Gaming/dp/B07C51JSRW/ref=sr_1_63?keywords=Fortnite&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8&qid=1527804526&sr=8-63 for £7.50, but there are a few options between £5 and £15.

NC4Now · 31/05/2018 23:15

I’d put a fiver in a card each and a box of chocs/sweets.
If there are loads of kids going they will get loads of presents. I always loved it when the kids got cash - less clutter and they could put it towards something they really wanted.

NewElthamMum13 · 31/05/2018 23:16

Are there any collectors' shops near you? I bought genuine Roman coins, £5 each from Stanley Gibbons recently, and I see there are loads of similar ones cheaper on Ebay. Tiny (smaller than a 5p coin), and clearly from a different age. Stanley Gibbons said they had loads from a huge hoard found years ago. Date back to about 350AD. Something like that might be fun.

Collectors' stamp set from their year of birth

Birthday newspaper

Selection of small fossils (eBay great for this too)

Small collection of interesting minerals (ditto eBay!).

Owl pellets for them to dissect.

Geodes for them to smash & find crystals inside - Hawkins Bazaar sells these.

firawla · 31/05/2018 23:19

What type of party is it? My 8 & 9 year old are very into football, a lot of them might be especially with the World Cup coming up. Mine would be happy with a cheap football from sports direct as you can never have too many! Or there are loads of footballer books about at the moment (eg WH Smith) which they liked. But if not sure of interests, you probably can’t go wrong with chocolate- box of celebrations or something, it’s cheap but would be a hit with mine

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 31/05/2018 23:25

We have the full size version of this vortex howler and it’s brilliant. I assume that the pocket size version is just as much fun and only £5 https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/gb/groceries/nerf-sports-pocket-vortex-aero-howler-133157360-p?dclid=CLP3dX-sNsCFRFi0wodtpkE9w&langId=44&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIpZZe0v6w2wIViJPtCh2yKg-4EAQYAiABEgJJPfDBwE&storeId=10151&krypto=LIysWcJdOMn1UgthNqcMpJ3GyaqKyTJ3bU%2FO6CnQK%2Fn4lLHjyS8NAbuy6E3mqTq3CTki6gDhDVlS2PqW6hmLb9bEqHsoYOhMyHqz31CN1Ym1A3Ek%2F53fsQ%2F0B4qW6opB2moTeoHyqQVb7eTQEqjFgl9BMnDQWGXO8d%2FndRw1pHW%2F5o%2FrWHnxki0SuetDT6LHkm7EmTuDwQQ%2Bd3NaDRkdZtaPhearh0at1KBDtBAzzE5Jv0ZNfiHA3Tfo2jRgJFL8bjzA5pz4v8CqGxd4hoYK2WbYgATQRZIkZr7IJzZBW10%3D&ddkey=https%3Agb%2Fgroceries%2Fnerf-sports-pocket-vortex-aero-howler-133157360-p

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 31/05/2018 23:26

Oh my that’s a long URL!!

junebirthdaygirl · 31/05/2018 23:28

Could you buy a set of books from the Book People and split it up?. Eg How to fool your parents set is about 5£ for 3 at the moment .
