There's a snake on my roof

Exactly that. Sat in my garden in Bulgaria, look up and there's a huge snake sat in the shade on my roof 🐍
I've googled it and it's a European rat snake. My OH is running round the house arming himself with kitchen knives and a yard brush. 🙄 Aibu to sit back and let it do its thing or should I burn the house down now and get the next flight back to England?

I would be more worried about the rats, assuming a rat snake does what it says on the tin......

BlooBagoo · 31/05/2018 13:16

I read the title to this in the voice of Woody from Toy Story.

keyboardkate · 31/05/2018 13:16

Ha ha I read the post as

"sat in my garden in Belgravia" lol.

Ohyesiam · 31/05/2018 13:17

I’d love a rat snake, I’d put it to service on next doors rat infested hen run , as long as it left the chooks alone !

EleanorHooverbelt · 31/05/2018 13:18

I misread this as "there's a snake on my foof"

Trouser snake? Wink

Freaklikemeee · 31/05/2018 13:18

I had Canadian friends (never seen snakes before)

That's odd as there are 35 types of snakes in Canada, including 4 venomous ones (rattlesnakes).

Singlenotsingle · 31/05/2018 13:18

Do you like Bulgaria? I was considering buying a house there at one stage

Stephisaur · 31/05/2018 13:19

Can't help reading the thread title in the voice of Woody from Toy Story Grin

Let it do it's thing. He probably wants to know why there are humans near his bed!

QueenOfAccidentalDeathStares · 31/05/2018 13:26

aww cute - pics !

OurMiracle1106 · 31/05/2018 13:28

It’s keeoing vermin down and doing you no harm id leave it (but be checking my bed before I flop into it so I didn’t squash it)

Same reason I leave spiders be- they keep flies to a minimum and I don’t mind them

KlutzyDraconequus · 31/05/2018 13:29

I have a snake in my.living room.. no big thing.. neither is the snake tbf. :)

tillytoodles1 · 31/05/2018 13:31

I used to keep snakes, they're beautiful. Leave it alone, it will just go when it cools down a little bit.

Weedsnseeds1 · 31/05/2018 13:39

It's just warming up so it can get going for the day.
It's non- venomous, so won't do you any harm. Unless you have rodents in the house it'll be off hunting elsewhere soon enough.

liz70 · 31/05/2018 13:41

"I read the title to this in the voice of Woody from Toy Story."

Same! Grin

TheMaddHugger · 31/05/2018 13:47

When I lived in Singapore and lived in a maisonette with a ground floor. I had the shock of my life one afternoon when a cobra was at the entrance of the (gated) kitchen door, trying to come inside......I ran out of the other entrance door to the guardhouse where the guys laughed at me and got a pole to move it to a nearby drain. They then put a line of sulphur powder across the kitchen entrance as snakes apparently hate the smell of sulphur.

A friend of mine lives in one of the beautiful black and white colonial houses (lots of tropical greenery) and she regularly found pythons in the garden. She gave up on keeping cats as the snakes would get them :(

And another friend used to have a 5 foot long water monitor lizard having a daily dip in her swimming pool!

drinkswineoutofamug · 31/05/2018 14:01

singlenotsingle been here 9 years. Love it. Cheap houses if you don't mind the toilet being a hole in the garden. We finally have an inside bathroom and full kitchen. Speak the local lingo . Sat round the side of the house in the shade.
We opted for somewhere away from the tourist areas. We have jackals at night and in the forest behind us wild boar.
The snake has totally disappeared. Either headed off to the barns or hidden under the roof tiles
