Would you be annoyed by this florist company?

A bunch of flowers were delivered by mistake to my address on Saturday. They were sent by an online florist and the sender had obviously put the wrong address.

I emailed the company to say there's been a mistake and can they let the senders know. Florist replied saying thank you for emailing, they'll contact the customer who ordered and it's OK for me to keep the flowers.

Thought no more about it until this evening when the lady who was supposed to receive the flowers comes knocking at my door. I explained that I had told the florist about the mix up and I assumed that they would arrange for a replacement bunch to be sent to her correct address.

Only the florist did no such thing. And now she's at my door, looking for her flowers. Flowers that are in my bin as they hadn't even lasted very long!

I feel that the florist company put me in an awkward position. Surely they could have sent her another bunch, that way she wouldn't have come knocking on my door for them?

What, if anything should I say to the florist?

I feel so bad I'm tempted to get her a bunch and leave them on her doorstep!

I can't believe they gave her your address!

Astrid2 · 30/05/2018 21:47

Pretty sure that's against data protection rules and you could probably sue.

Bootsuit · 30/05/2018 21:48

If it's not clear in my op. The flowers were labelled for Mrs so and so, then my address. When said lady came looking for them she told me her house number. We're on the same street but, obviously different numbers. I did knock on my neighbours doors to see if they know who Mrs so and so is but they didn't know her either.

Wtf?! They gave her your address???

Thehop · 30/05/2018 21:49

That’s ridiculous that the florist told her where they had gone!!!

Rocinante1 · 30/05/2018 21:49

The florist might not have given the address.
The sender has addressed it and paid. The florist delivered. The flowers arrived, and you've told the florist that the recipient does not live at the address they were given. They've called the sender to say "we sent the flowers as per your instructions. Your instructions were wrong, do you want to order more". They've obviously declined to buy more and contacted the person who was meant to get them and said "I sent them to the wrong address - go here and get them".

The florist had nothing to do with anything other than delivering to the address they were given.

Be mad at the sender. Not the florist. They aren't going to provide free flowers because they did nothing wrong.

19lottie82 · 30/05/2018 21:50

On Saturday? They’d be half dead by now anyway.

I would just pass her back to the florist. No need to feel guilty, you have not done anything wrong.

Sagelistener · 30/05/2018 21:51

Definitely should not have passed on your address to someone else! And yes they should send her a replacement (nothing to do with you). I would contact manager and let them know what has happened and lodge a complaint at their misuse of data.

DailyMailFail101 · 30/05/2018 21:51

They gave this lady your address? Surely not...

Bootsuit · 30/05/2018 21:51

I assume she knows my address from the florist letting the senders know about the mistake (the flowers were a birthday gift from her friends) , then her friend who ordered told her the address they put on the order form so she could call round.

@Thehop
@Bunchofdaffodils
@TheChineseChicken
@Astrid2

It properly bothered me that you all blame the florist.

The sender gave the wrong address. The florist delivered. The florist will have called him to say he got the address wrong and asked if he wanted to re-order. He would need to pay again as the florist did everything right. He's said no, and then called his friend and told her where to go by the flowers (the address he had).

The florist wouldn't have given out details. The florist couldn't even call the OP and say "can you take them to no.X" because she can't give out that info, so the only option was to let OP keep them.

Whatshallidonowpeople · 30/05/2018 21:53

Half dead is a few days? Every bunch I've had have lasted 3 weeks

greenlanes · 30/05/2018 21:54

It sounds as if the only issue here is that the flowers haven't lasted even 5 days, but then it has been very humid which seems to kill cut flowers. Did you at least have the card to give her?

Astrid2 · 30/05/2018 21:54

I assumed from the OP that it was a completely wrong address not just wrong house number!!

FiestaThenSiesta · 30/05/2018 21:55

They didn’t! The sender has her address as the sender mistakenly put OP’s house number down. So the woman could have simply gotten the OP’s address from the sender and she’s unaware a replacement arrangement is due.

Thesearmsofmine · 30/05/2018 21:55

I guess it happened the way @rocinante1 has said and she got your address from the sender rather than the florist. It wasn’t your fault OP.

Sagelistener · 30/05/2018 21:55

Good point Rocinante1, may have been sender, however OP's only contact is with the florist, who told her she could keep them.

speakout · 30/05/2018 21:55

Yes but that isn;t the fault of the florist.

It's the senders fault.

Rocinante1 · 30/05/2018 21:56

@Bootsuit

So if you figured out that the florist did not give out your address, then why are you annoyed at them?

They received an order. They fulfilled it. They will have called to tell the sender that he gave them incorrect info - but that's the sender fault. He had the option of buying more and didn't. That's his fault.

The florist have been paid for one bouquet. They sent one bouquet. Why should they send a free on out for something that was nothing to do with them?

Be annoyed with the sender.

Notevilstepmother · 30/05/2018 21:58

I bought cut flowers from the supermarket over a week ago, they are still going strong.

I’d be disappointed if florist delivered flowers didn’t last Saturday to Wednesday. For that reason alone I think the florist should send new ones.

FiestaThenSiesta · 30/05/2018 21:58

I suspect you were told to keep them as the florist assumed it was initially their delivery error. And when they realised it wasn’t, they didn’t have a way of contacting you to retract that. The sender should have sent the woman round to yours the same day to collect them. I wonder why it took her so long to finally come round - maybe she was out of town?

Bootsuit · 30/05/2018 22:00

Yes, Rocinante1 has the situation summed up. I just feel like I've been put in an uncomfortable situation. I've big time social anxiety and now I'm worrying about this and what she must think of me.

OP posts:
hazeydays14 · 30/05/2018 22:01

Agree with PP that the florist has said they won’t send new flowers because it wasn’t their mistake and the friend has told their friend what the address was. I don’t think the florist is at fault to be fair.

Rocinante1 · 30/05/2018 22:04

You have nothing to worry about. You didn't do anything wrong.
If the lady is annoyed, her annoyance should be directed at her friend for getting the details wrong. You've got nothing to worry about here.
I'm sure you were nice to her; if she's a normal person, she'll understand.

But please bear in mind that small businesses can be ruined by complaints like this if they end up on social media- things just spiral on there. So by trying to place blame or anger with the florist, you could ruin a business. That's only OK if they've actually really messed up. If you've only complained on here, that's great but this kind of thing usually ends up on Facebook.

I'm a small business owner, so I get a bit overinvested in stuff like this. My apologies!

MissionItsPossible · 30/05/2018 22:06

What did the lady who was meant to receive the flowers say/do when you told her you’d chucked them?
