How old is too old for a sticker book?

DP (36) has spent this evening excitedly discussing his plans to complete a World Cup sticker book when it begins next month. Am I being unreasonable to think that he's a little old for stickers? He's been talking dreamily of sticker books he's owned and loved in the past... But I think the odds of actually completing such a book (given that I highly doubt he'll have any peers to do swapsies with) are really rather low. I also fear that in his quest to finally complete a sticker book he'll end up spending rather a lot of money and our house will end up filled with excess-to-requirement stickers as he refuses to ever throw anything away.
AIBU to tell him there will be no sticker book?

My (nearly 38 yo) DH did this the last World Cup - he did swapsies with kids of friends Smile

Personally I think there are far worse and far more expensive hobbies out there- I’d let the man have his stickers!

AsAProfessionalFekko · 29/05/2018 19:34

DS 36 months? 😁

SparklyLeprechaun · 29/05/2018 19:35

Orrr, just let him have his fun. He'll get bored of it, get it out of his system, and never attempt it again.

About 8 I'd say is too old for a sticker book.

MeanTangerine · 29/05/2018 19:38

Google says it will cost £773 to fill the sticker book this year. If this is more money than you can afford / than you get to spend on your hobbies then YANBU. But in principle there's nothing wrong with an adult collecting things, especially once every four years.

LegallyBrunet · 29/05/2018 19:41

My brother has one and he’s 27. He’s driving us all mad with it

SandAndSea · 29/05/2018 19:48

I'd LOVE a sticker book!!!!

How can something which feels so good be wrong?!

Mewithane · 29/05/2018 19:49

Hubby and his mates have swaps meet ups. He is 30.

RusholmeRuffian · 29/05/2018 19:51

YABU. I'm doing it and I'm older than him. I'm swapping with friends's children and a few other adults. For me it's tradition in the lead up to the World Cup that I've kept up since Spain '82. The price of stickers has gone up but no way is it going to cost me anywhere near £700!

4GreenApples · 29/05/2018 19:58

I’d like to say that 4 is too old for this sticker book after SIL kindly gave a pair of them to my DC.

I don’t want to be paying out £££ on hundreds of stickers 😫

There’s almost 700 stickers in the book. Even if we were lucky enough to never get a duplicate sticker (and we all know that’s never going to happen), with a RRP of 80p for 5 stickers, it’d cost over £100 to buy 700 stickers.

overnightangel · 29/05/2018 20:00

My brother’s wife was less than impressed when he came home with the World Cupone under the guise of helping their 4 year old with her numbers 😂
He’s 41.... 🙄

StillNoClue · 29/05/2018 20:04

I'm 28 and I want to do the World Cup sticker book. Sadly I'm skint.

I did read that it's oddly very popular amongst grown adults who obviously did the book when they were younger and still enjoy doing them now. They have a club and rules include your not aloud to buy more than 3 packs a day .

loveablether · 29/05/2018 20:05

My DH is 46 and doing it. His free time no harm. Like me doing art or crafty stuff - he finds it relaxing and exciting when he gets a 'shiny' haha!

edwinbear · 29/05/2018 20:06

DH is 50 and doing a panini (whatever they are called) book.

He’s trying to convince me it’s actually for DS (8) but DS has zero interest in football so I’m not falling for it 😂

Katedotness1963 · 29/05/2018 20:07

Well, I'm 55 and I still enjoy colouring, so a sticker book at 36 sounds right to me.

sonjadog · 29/05/2018 20:15

I bet that somewhere out there on the internet is a community of middle-aged men all swapping football stickers. He could join.

MrsHathaway · 29/05/2018 20:17

My DC have already started their Russia 2018 books. Twitter is full of minor sleb adults arranging swaps!

Glassofredandapackofcrisps · 29/05/2018 20:19

I know nothing about football sticker books!
I looked at this thread thinking it was something to do with reward charts Hmm
However, in Tesco the other day I saw the World Cup albums had security tags on them.
I thought that strange but it all makes sense now Smile

Thorsday · 29/05/2018 20:21

Jesus, are adults not allowed fun anymore?

SometimesMaybe · 29/05/2018 20:22

You can buy stickers in bulk on eBay and when you get close to the end people are selling individual numbered ones.
DH is a sticker nerd.

bookmum08 · 29/05/2018 20:24

Out grow a sticker book!!! Never!! Especially a football one. You are never to old. By the way I see some WHSmith branches are doing swapsies events so hopefully OPs hubby can make use of that!!

thelastredwinegum · 29/05/2018 20:26

DH & I did one for the last World Cup, quite a few people we know did it too so plenty of swaps available.
#GotGotNeed on Twitter helped too ;)

MumofBoysx2 · 29/05/2018 20:26

I read somewhere that it will cost on average around £600 to complete those books. Expensive hobby!

MrsHathaway · 29/05/2018 20:30

It's only £700 without swaps.

Still probably getting on for £100 even with a lot of people to do live swaps with.

ilovesooty · 29/05/2018 20:30

I don't see why you think you have the right to veto his sticker book.

TegKernow · 29/05/2018 20:32

You are NEVER too old for a sticker book Grin
