How old is too old for a sticker book?

DP (36) has spent this evening excitedly discussing his plans to complete a World Cup sticker book when it begins next month. Am I being unreasonable to think that he's a little old for stickers? He's been talking dreamily of sticker books he's owned and loved in the past... But I think the odds of actually completing such a book (given that I highly doubt he'll have any peers to do swapsies with) are really rather low. I also fear that in his quest to finally complete a sticker book he'll end up spending rather a lot of money and our house will end up filled with excess-to-requirement stickers as he refuses to ever throw anything away.
AIBU to tell him there will be no sticker book?

Ha, thanks for the feedback everyone! I probably should have mentioned it was meant to be rather lighthearted (DP knows I posted and is rather chuffed) I suppose I'll let him have his sticker book (not that I could stop him anyway). I'm sure he'll get bored of it like all the other boys ;)

(He's now saying that I should really be buying it for him, given the overwhelming verdict against me here!)

However, in Tesco the other day I saw the World Cup albums had security tags on them.

Shock Shock Really? They were giving the actual albums away for free at my local Tesco! I assumed that was because of all the ££££ you’d have to spend to fill up the album....

Hah, he's a bit behind the curve - DH and his swap mates are nearly finished with theirs.

He's only done it since DS was born but has managed to hide it from sticky toddler hands

HeyOverHereYo · 29/05/2018 20:53

Saying "no sticker book" would be unreasonable; I'm 47 and still love stickers. You are never too old for fun and play, let him have his joy! But you are not unreasonable to worry about the expense. Keep receipts and encourage him to ask others who aren't collecting for their stickers instead of buying things just to get them. Or give him a budget to spend on whatever he wants to get them, and once that's done, it. Is. Done!

Do sticker books still have that smell that they used to have?

I loved that smell.

I had a Smash Hits sticker poster (I think it was) and they did this really good thing where they had a letter on each packet so you could buy a different pack each time if the newsagent had that pack in the box.

You could buy then in alphabetical order as long as you remembered which letter you were up to.

It meant you didn't get duplicate stickers but some of the packs with more popular singers or groups in them were like gold dust because they sold out first.

I think it is sweet and probably reminds him of collecting them when he was younger. My OH has started collecting some of the weekly magazines with parts of models (if that makes sense); and although expensive make him happy and as long as the things that need to be paid get paid who am I to get in the way.

Glassofredandapackofcrisps · 29/05/2018 20:59

4 green apples-maybe it was the actual stickers? All the same to me!!Smile

We have sticker books for football whenever there’s a big tournament. They never get filled as it would cost a ridiculous amount of money, but it’s all about managing the DCs expectations from the start, so they have fun, join in swaps etc without spending a bomb. It’s alao handy to be able to say to grandma that (as usual) no sweets please- but they would love a pack of stickers instead.

Jimdandy · 29/05/2018 20:59

You’re never too old for a sticker book lol

Fruitcorner123 · 29/05/2018 21:00

the sticker books have been out a few weeks. He needs to get cracking

MismatchedPJs · 29/05/2018 21:02

"Lean in" Grin

Football sticker books and a grown up income are a recipe for spending a fortune. If he's going to do it, he needs friends doing it too, as the key is lots of swapsies.

Btw my DS decided he'd grown out of stickers age 8. It's a PITA, they were such an easy reward.

Lowdoorinthewal1 · 29/05/2018 21:05

Oh DH (38) is a total sucker for a sticker book. He has appropriated DS's Overwatch one in the last couple of days!

He did a Marvel one a while ago that ended in several Ebay incidents we don't talk about anymore.

ladymelbourne1926 · 29/05/2018 21:08

My son (10) showed one of my brothers (36) the one I bought him and now my 3 brothers, partner and one brother in law are each doing one Confused they all swap with each other and my sons friends and chat about it seemingly for hours!
There's also a swap thread on here running.
It seems you are never too old Grin

BlueJava · 29/05/2018 21:10

I'm 53, I'm doing the World Cup sticker book! That's not what you wanted to hear is it.

mavismcruet · 29/05/2018 21:11

So long as he sticks them IN THE STICKER BOOK and not on the floor/walls/library books/cat then he would be allowed one in my house.

BertrandRussell · 29/05/2018 21:12

My ds had a sticker book when he was in year 11. He did lots of swaps with the PE staff at school......

MissKummerspeck · 29/05/2018 21:18

I bought myself a unicorn sticker book the other week, the stickers and scenes in the book are so pretty. I took great pleasure in completing it. (I’m 28) Grin

User467 · 29/05/2018 21:19

Ooo I don't know. When Sainsbury's did their Lego around the world book and cards last year I got quite into it! Became a little too invested in helping my son collect them all including bargaining swaps and driving to randoms houses to collect cards!

GettingAwayWithIt · 29/05/2018 21:19

I am 34 and have a World Cup sticker book Grin

Have joined a swapsies page on Facebook and have already swapped lots of duplicates. There is also a swap event on at our local Sainsbury's on Friday which I'll pop along to as I'm currently on maternity leave.

Yes it costs to fill the sticker book but I used to spend a lot on a social life which has gone down the swannie since having my daughter. Actually, it's her sticker book Grin

MuddlingMackem · 29/05/2018 21:24

DH bought one for the family for nostalgia purposes. Did anyone watch the documentary about Panini and Merlin sticker companies that was on telly recently?

And as for not being too old for sticker books, I've sold a few of the Usborne Historical Sticker Dolly Dressing books to adults. Grin

emmyrose2000 · 30/05/2018 05:31

There are very busy World Cup Panini sticker swap groups on facebook, populated solely/mainly by adults if their profile pics are anything to go by, so DH definitely isn't alone in this hobby!

steff13 · 30/05/2018 07:01

Jesus, are adults not allowed fun anymore?

Nope. All we can do is pay bills and eat vegetables. Sad

I had so many good smelly stickers in my sticker book when I was little. I'd love to have them now.
