Apparently so, because I'm running back and forth to the toilet again trying not to puke up from the agony of IBS cramps. I don't even know what it was this time! I tried something new like...4 days ago, which by all standards should have caused a reaction way before today if it was going to. I've also been having that new thing every single day since then so I'm buggered if that's what it was.

I'm sick of my diet being so limited. I'm envious of people who can have SALADS. fucking SALADS. I'd kill to have a salad with green leafy bits and fresh vegetables without having to worry that I'm going to shoot myself to Mars on the toilet later while screaming in pain.

(ftr, I've been to the doctors multiple times and had everything tested - I just have really severe IBS, the worst my particular doctor has seen and they don't give a damn about finding out how to help me so I have to help myself with a boring low FODMAP diet).

I just want pizza. Or garlic bread. Or anything nice.

Not sure why salad would be an issue so long as it doesn't involve onion or garlic or fruits or dressings with fructose in them.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 29/05/2018 06:39

Dsis worked out it was fructose that triggered her ibs. It’s high in fruit juice, honey and processed food/drinks.

Jamboree05 · 29/05/2018 06:39

Oh get the fuck off your high horse @user. Salad is not bloody rubbish- what a ridiculous thing to say!!

OP, I hope you are ok. I really do feel your pain being celiac. I very often have days where I just want to sit in a corner, stuff my face with cake, and cry.

That being said, you will feel loads better for cutting the things out that do affect you. Have you experimented with your diet, seeing what makes you feel grim and adjusting accordingly? Has your Dr run any allergy tests?

user1499173618 · 29/05/2018 06:42

Salad is absolutely covered in chemical irritants.

Too much uncooked food, especially vegetables, is tough on the digestion. Cooked vegetables (but not boiled or steamed) are healthy and easy to digest.

murphys · 29/05/2018 06:47

Argh Thorsday, I know it is shit isn't it. Literally.

Fellow sufferer here. I also found doctors less than helpful, yes was diagnosed but they aren't all that helpful when it comes to trying to lead a normal life, and just to eat a normal plate of food.

I also get VERY frustrated with the limited diet. I did try religiously to do the low FODMAP but I battled. And even some of those foods were triggering.

So I avoid any wheat and any dairy, and whole lot of fruit and veg which set me off, and some days I just sit here and think, wtf am I supposed to eat today...... No cannot have a quick takeaway lunch like everyone else, cannot have the snacks going around, cannot take up the offer of cake for someones birthday, I swear I think people around me think i am being purposely rude. But they just dont get it. 'Ah just have one piece, its hardly going to kill you' is the comments I get often. Er, no it wont kill me but I will be rolling around in pain later on though. Hmm

I take Librax at night which is quite highly scheduled so you cannot get it over the counter, has to be on script and when I have a bad flare up I find the Iberogast drops to work quite well.

But you do have all my sympathies.

Have you had a bit of a stressy time lately? I know mine flares up when i am a bit more stressed, hence why the Librax works as anti anxiety as well.

silentpool · 29/05/2018 06:48

I fixed my IBS by working on healing my gut. Look into gut healing diets and boosting your microbiome. In your situation, I would start with homemade chicken soup. Really cook down the bones to take advantage of the healing collagen and gelatine. Eat it for 3 or 4 days to rest the gut lining and then start a gut friendly diet . I still don't eat much processed food but I am done with IBS. You will probably need to steer well clear of shelf stable items, I still find I do badly with packaged bread etc.

Fidgetwonkam · 29/05/2018 06:51

I suffer with mild IBS symptoms so nothing like you but I would expect to suffer the after 3 bowls of cereal, half a packet of biscuits and a baguette in one day!!

murphys · 29/05/2018 06:52

I will take a look at that too Silent. Is there a particular one that you follow?

It really can be very debilitating, never mind frustrating.

nannybeach · 29/05/2018 06:55

I def feel your pain, (and my DH he was just debating if he could stay out of the toilet long enough to do his 40 mile commute to work) Agree User is nasty, and uninformed, cooked veg but not boiled or steamed are healthy and easy to digest, well, that leaves fried and baked, so thats the healthy option really!!! I spent my childhood eating healthy, home grown stuff, own chicken for proper free range eggs, never did the burger coke, thing, cant stand coke, dont eat junk food, was veggi for 25 years, now eat fish chicken, and med diet (yes, home grown) No, I am not suggesting everyone can do this, before the flack starts, I also have diverticulitus, pain from that 12 out of ten, worse than giving birth. Has your GP actually sent you for tests to confirm it is actually IBS, I had cameras up,down, bloods, scans, I do have family history of bowel cancer. Also have both acid and silent reflux, NOT caused by any bad eating habits. The IBs was caused by severe bullying at work, by direct boss, DH by phobias/anxiety, you get into a viscious circle, it gets bad, you get stressed. Try, yoga, meditating, acupuncture, after getting all these tests.it used to be thought that peppermint was helpfull, now found to be too acidic, to benefit.

nannybeach · 29/05/2018 06:59

yes, you could give pre and probiotics a go, you need the ones you have to keep in the fridge, (sorry have just seen you have probably had all the tests I mentioned) get you gut microbes tested, last resport a "poo" transplant.

DragonNoodleCake · 29/05/2018 06:59

If you had salad was there onion in it? I've been way better since I cut all onions out of my diet. I always ask for no onions.
I totally sympathise, Drs don't want to know, just tell you to try x y and z.

user1499173618 · 29/05/2018 07:00

There are many ways of cooking vegetables that are neither boiled, steamed, fried or baked!

user1499173618 · 29/05/2018 07:03

UK doctors are not trained in nutrition/dietetics.

mancmummy1414 · 29/05/2018 07:05

Feel your pain! Only, I wish I could eat a pizza or burger or some other greasy junk food without getting horrendous griping pains afterwards!

Etymology23 · 29/05/2018 07:07

I feel your pain as well OP.

I struggle with various veg as they just go straight through me, as well as pulses and large quantities of red meat, some cereals, and then sometimes suffer despite avoiding all those. I can eat wheat and dairy fairly reliably though and am hugely grateful for that.

I think I just get really really sick of having to think about it, and the level of suffering seems disproportionate with a single lapse.

BrutusMcDogface · 29/05/2018 07:09

How do you cook vegetables, then, user? I'm genuinelymystified interested.

Livingsymbol · 29/05/2018 07:10

Sounds like Gall bladder, as I found IBS is the easy cheapest option.

I puked up a huge stone took it to the drs & they said it was alright Confused

BrutusMcDogface · 29/05/2018 07:10

Jamboree- why do you feel the op's pain, being coeliac? There's no end of gluten free cake out there, and no need for any kind of pain or symptoms. It's not the same thing!

TuTru · 29/05/2018 07:15

Stress can be worse than any food stuff. Even if you think you are not stressed, if something worrying or stressful is happening it can come out as ibs instead of showing any other way. Anxiety? Xx

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 29/05/2018 07:17

IBS is really frustrating - all the lovely things you'd like to eat, but know you can't. I can't digest onions, peas or corn. Anything with rapeseed oil in it has me running to the loo within 4 hours. I have cut out red meat almost completely (maybe once a month) and live on chicken and fish. I actually do hate salad (rabbit food!) and can't eat tomatoes, cucumber or radishes. Being invited to other people's houses for dinner is a nightmare as you never know what you will be given and I agree that people in general just think you are making a fuss without understanding the condition.

Juells · 29/05/2018 07:19

I'm sick of my diet being so limited. I'm envious of people who can have SALADS. fucking SALADS.

My sister was livid when she was having an ultrasound and the doctor said "you've been having too much of that old rabbit food" ! 😒

She can never identify what causes problems either. She stays off gluten mostly, and find it helps, even though she's not coeliac.

StrangeLookingParasite · 29/05/2018 07:20

Salad is generally absolute rubbish! Unless you buy freshly picked heads of organic salad which you wash copiously.

What utter rubbish.

UK doctors are not trained in nutrition/dietetics.

Neither are you, evidently.

nannybeach · 29/05/2018 07:31

Yes, brutus I also want to know about these other "lots of ways of cooking veg", I havent got a gall bladder, (or appendix)and I have all these problems, With the gall bladder problems, it was pain, D & V, but very rapid weight loss, and I had to eat every hour on the hour to stop the pain, DH had similar symptoms with ulcers, I went down to 6 stone.

nannybeach · 29/05/2018 07:34

I could cope with food going through me in 4 hours, thats pretty normal several times I have been out had Welsh Raebit, hot choloclate, have both seperately, no problems, no dairy intolerance, almost instant pain, and rushing I mean rushing to the toilet!

Juells · 29/05/2018 07:41

@silentpool

I fixed my IBS by working on healing my gut. Look into gut healing diets and boosting your microbiome.

Do you have a recommendation? Years ago, when I was in a really stressful situation, I was in agony with my stomach. I came across a cheap book 'somewhere', written by a doctor, that claimed to fix all stomach problems and thought I had nothing to lose, so followed the diet religiously. It fixed my stomach, but I've never been able to remember what the hell the diet was, to pass it on to my sister. The only thing I can remember about it was that it started with four days of plain rice, and involved lots of vitamin K.

One of the things that I had to avoid was potatoes, unless cooked at very very very high heat in oven. I'm still wary of them, and anything from the nightshade family. I've never had a recurrence of the previous problem though, it was like my gut was healed.

Another thing my sister finds helps is curcumin. I take it as well, as I have diverticulosis, and the curcumin prevents it flaring up. I get it in tablet form from Amazon, but I'm sure Holland & Barrett do it too. Huge horse tablets! I empty a capsule into a spoon, with a drop of olive oil which aids absorption. Ah, yes H&B do do it

The curcumin is more effective when combined with black pepper and an oil.
