Having an asthma attack but

Why in hell's blazes am I having it?

The only thing I can think of is the weather?

I'm ok and treating it with inhalers, but it's pretty bad

LuckyLuckyWoman · 28/05/2018 21:49

I've needed my inhalers today, first time in a while. Definitely the weather, or a trigger for me is cleaning products. Have you been scrubbing the bathroom? :)

Hope you get it under control soon

topcat2014 · 28/05/2018 21:49

Seretide made a huge difference to my asthma!

Penfold007 · 28/05/2018 21:49

I've been okay today so forgot to take an antihistamine. Sun was shining but suddenly we had a couple of drops of rain and then a downpour. Only lasted a few minutes but as it dried up I found my self sneezing an wheezing. My theory is it washes pollen etc down then dries it up back into the atmosphere.

shakingmyhead1 · 28/05/2018 21:51

when you see your doctor next ask about going on symbicort, it is a preventer and you also use it as a reliever if you feel an attack coming on or during an attack, its also used in the SMART asthma program ( where when you feel an attack coming on you hard core medicate no messing about)
its made a huge difference to my and my sons asthma, i never need my blue inhaler now, where as before i was always sucking on it and never fully getting relief

glenthebattleostrich · 28/05/2018 21:53

Hope you get it under control soon. Remember, don't mess with it, if you start to feel worse straight to hospital.

Mine is playing up because of a combo of humidity, pollen and some Muppet letting their husky jump all over me. I'm more allergic to huskies than any other dog :(

whatyadoing · 28/05/2018 22:00

Have just taken my antihistamine. It just feels like I'm gasping for air.

OP posts:
whatyadoing · 28/05/2018 22:04

My ventolin never leaves my side and my serotide is beside me too. Don't worry, I will know if it becomes life threatening and not manageable.

To the poster who asked - Yes, I cleaned the bathroom! This feels different though. Proper asthma attack with no explanation.

Is your reliever helping, and how long has it last so far? Are you improving or worsening?

Etymology23 · 28/05/2018 22:06

Ah, just seen post about knowing if it’s okay or not :)

ProzacAndWine · 28/05/2018 22:06

If it's not settling with the reliever, do call for help. It kind of sounds like you might need a nebuliser to help you through the attack. Last time when I had to call 111 they sent an ambulance responder with a nebuliser, and that helped things settle so that I didn't need a trip to A&E. Don't be afraid of making a fuss.

whatyadoing · 28/05/2018 22:07

Reliever making no difference. Just feels like everything is closing in.

OP posts:
ProzacAndWine · 28/05/2018 22:08

Ahh, crosspost. Good you know when/if you need extra help.

Bobbiepin · 28/05/2018 22:09

Are you ok OP?

@prozacandwine if you are using your ventolin daily your asthma is not well controlled and your presenters need assessing. Please book in with your asthma nurse.

Bobbiepin · 28/05/2018 22:09

*preventers

whatyadoing · 28/05/2018 22:10

I'm fine as it is. If I need hospital or anything like it, I will do it. Bloody annoying though - just can't get my breath!! Thank you all.

OP posts:
Bobbiepin · 28/05/2018 22:10

@whatyadoing if you've had 8-10 puffs and its not helping, it's time to call for help. 111 at the very least, 999 if you need to. Please seek help.

Excelsa · 28/05/2018 22:14

Agree with above, get help. You might need steroids.

whatyadoing · 28/05/2018 22:15

Bobbie - the ventolin isn't helping at all. I'm just panting , not wheezing, odd altogether.

OP posts:
Tiredtomybones · 28/05/2018 22:17

I nearly lost DS just over a year ago with his asthma. It sounds like you know what you are doing with your medication and when to call for help but please please please do not underestimate the beast that is asthma. 111 or 999 as soon as you think you need it. Please.

ProzacAndWine · 28/05/2018 22:18

I think you should call, OP. The relievers aren't working, your oxygen could be getting low, you might be heading to feeling very unwell very soon, so really I'd recommend being safe rather than sorry.

@prozacandwine if you are using your ventolin daily your asthma is not well controlled and your presenters need assessing. Please book in with your asthma nurse.

Yes, I know. It's gone on for a few weeks only. I mentioned to GP last week (saw her about something else), and she didn't seem overly worried, but I'll definitely go to see the asthma nurse if it doesn't return to normal soon.

whatyadoing · 28/05/2018 22:20

It's so bloody annoying! It just looks like I'm fine, why on earth would I go to A&E! It has been years since I have had an attack. It is well medicated up until today!
Meanwhile, I feel like about 10% of my lungs are receiving air.

OP posts:
Bobbiepin · 28/05/2018 22:21

@whatyadoing can you hold a conversation? Finish a sentence in one breath? Please just call 111 and see what they say. Asthma attacks can turn so suddenly and then you'll be unable to call.

@prozacandwine that's good, look after yourself. The pollen and humidity at the moment is a bitch!

Bobbiepin · 28/05/2018 22:22

It only takes one attack. I've not had one in 5 years but that one put me in hospital. It's not worth the risk.

readingreading · 28/05/2018 22:23

I think you need to call now - understand you have experience but you say this is odd for you and you are panting, ventolin not working, closing in.
Please call 111 or 999 right now

whatyadoing · 28/05/2018 22:25

Yes, I'm completely good for talking. It's easing now. Antihistamine maybe kicking in plus I took tonight's Seretide. Still feels like I don't have half of my lungs, but I'm good I think. Gotta get to bed. Work in morning.
