.... to object to people pressure washing garden paving?

It just seems very noisy and goes on for hours. I have neighbours on either side who like to do this.

Is it a clean freak thing to do like bleaching door frames? I've heard it's not actually very good for the stones.

I just sweep the paved areas of the garden with an old-fashioned broom from time to time.

(Naturally I tolerate this in the way you have to tolerate neighbours' eccentricities. But this seems to be some new fashion. I can't remember it happening when I was younger.)

Really?

DesignedForLife · 28/05/2018 16:37

YABU. Our patio slabs go greeny-grey over the course of a year. Jet washing makes them nice sand colour again.

IWantMyHatBack · 28/05/2018 16:38

I love pressure washing things, it so satisfying

TeresasGreen · 28/05/2018 16:38

Our patio is in shade under trees. It is the quickest and most effective way to keep it safe - otherwise it just gets covered in green slime.

TheSpottedZebra · 28/05/2018 16:39

I do it, and I really am no neat freak. It makes it much lighter, and gets away all the slippy moss, lichen etc.

I did overdo it last year though, and I think wrecked the sub base a bit Blush

SoyDora · 28/05/2018 16:39

Ooh I wish we had a pressure washer to do ours.

Joan90 · 28/05/2018 16:40

I love jet washing stuff. I did our patio and it had to be repointed. Expensive mistake

charlestonchaplin · 28/05/2018 16:41

My driveway is in a state with moss. I have tried scrubbing it off with little success. I have always avoided pressure washing because I know it can cause damage and I'm not sure the driveway is up to it, but I am seriously considering it now. I'd do it on a gloomy weekday if possible though. I suspect my neighbours think I'm letting the neighbourhood down.

TimeToDrinkDecaff · 28/05/2018 16:41

How often do your neighbours jet wash their patios? I think annual is a normal thing to do to bring the stones back to life, transforms the look of them. If that’s what they’re doing yabu. If they’re doing them on a weekly basis then I’d think it was a bit weird but it can’t take more than an hour or so, therefore surely not terribly annoying? Although I appreciate some noises are more easily tolerated by some than others.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 28/05/2018 16:42

Yes, I want the patio and paths to look nice. It doesn’t take that long and as long as you don’t do it at an unearthly hour, I don’t see the problem. We’ll be doing our driveway at some point too.

I don’t think it’s any more intrusive than cutting the grass and much less so that the music blaring from a teenager’s open bedroom window.

UterusUterusGhali · 28/05/2018 16:43

I don't know why they do it on a lovely day. Surely you can do it on a day when you know people are not necessarily enjoying their garden.

My neighbor the other day did his car, which was parked next to mine in the communal car park. Mine is now FILTHY!
Once he pressure washed the fence (!) soaking my washing and car seat that was on the patio so it all had to be rewashed.

JustPotteringAround · 28/05/2018 16:44

Do you have an alternative way for me to remove the moss that grows over winter? It’s a slippy as hell without the annual powerwash.

Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2018 16:48

We do this to our patio once a year. It is noisy, but unfortunately jet washers are.

The only problem is it jets all the dirt over everything else. But the patio is clean. Grin

Sirzy · 28/05/2018 16:48

I did my partners the other week, no amount of brushing would have got them as clean as using the power hose did.

OohMavis · 28/05/2018 16:48

My garden is all patio. My options are:

  1. Jet wash it once or twice a year (on fairly nice days so the water evaporates) and piss off my neighbours.
  2. Slip and break my back on the algae that grows on it.
Rainbowtrees · 28/05/2018 16:51

I did mine for the first time last year and discovered my patio is three different colours!

eurochick · 28/05/2018 16:51

Part of our path is on a slope. It's treacherous by the end of the winter. A quick jet wash sorts it.

FuckPants · 28/05/2018 16:54

We jet wash our patio once or twice over summer, if a neighbour started moaning I'd look at them like Hmm

JennieLee · 28/05/2018 16:54

I quite like moss.... Concrete slabs aren't that attractive.

I can see that slippery surfaces are a problem. But why do paving slabs need to be ultra- clean? It's not as if you are eating dinner off the slabs. (The only area where I remove moss is where a stone path slopes downwards in a sort of ramp. That can be slippery when it's wet and we go down to hang washing out etc.

I suspect one of my neighbours of being a clean freak - though to be honest I've not been keeping track of how often she's jet-washed the patio. I suspect the neighbour on the other side - young male - of enjoying playing with power tools. I think he may do power washing every month or two during spring/summer/autumn

Pressure washers weren't as affordable as they are now, so less people had them.

They do it when it's hot because the water dries up quickly and whatever they are washing, won't have water stains on.

I'm not bothered by noise, so I never understand these complaints, tbh. I thought the thread would be about water conservation.

senioritabonita · 28/05/2018 16:55

DH does the path so I don't slip onto my arse and break my leg!

OohMavis · 28/05/2018 16:56

Well my children play on the whole garden, so yeah every single one needs to be grippy.

Do they have children?

Sparklingbrook · 28/05/2018 16:57

If you are going to get your patio set out for a bit of al fresco dining why would you want to put it on a mossy grimy patio?

NewYearNewMe18 · 28/05/2018 16:58

Tell me about it .

Next door, retired for 20+ years does this every bloody Sunday and bank holiday. WHY? WHY? WHY? cant he do it when I'm at work. It's not like he has anything pressing to do all bloody week.

Over the road, a whole row of 4 houses, every sodding Sunday at 7am, competitive karcher tyre washing. twats

HushabyeMountainGoat · 28/05/2018 16:59

I love pressure washing stuff. I think a really smart looking patio or driveway makes a big difference to the appearance of a house. I can't wait to borrow my dad's as my dull drive and excuse for a front garden is getting on my nerves
