To think some people take drugs because it is fun?

There is the assumption that people take drugs because of mental health problems, or other problems. But plenty of people take drugs because it is fun. I am not advocating taking drugs. But sometimes it is as simple as that.

I'll hold my hand up, i used to go raving all night doing ecstasy. It was exciting and i was oblious to the dangers. I never saw any violence in those sort of nightclubs compared to your boozy nightclub. I met some of the most interesting people in the chillout rooms. People from all backgrounds and jobs mixed together with no judgement. I came out the other end ok so did most of our social circle. I would never let my children know of what i got up though because as parents we are naturally concerned with the dangers that we understand better now.

CoteDAzur · 28/05/2018 13:47

"I have been with other people while they are on drugs and I am not. They were boring and annoying as hell. But they were having fun."

Alcohol is no different. Being sober among drunks is hell on Earth.

crunchymint · 28/05/2018 13:49

It is a long time since I have taken drugs. But I might take it up again when I am in my eighties.

@mydog

Yes, I had an alcoholic in my immediate family too. It sucks. Even more in the extended family, so I have to really watch myself around alcohol and will be drilling it into my dcs too.

I also had a relative who very loudly and proudly was a lifelong teetotaller, but was completely addicted to prescription drugs.

The lesson is, don’t judge anyone for using or being addicted to drugs, (including alcohol). There but for the grace of God...

charlestonchaplin · 28/05/2018 13:53

I think the last few posts give some insight into the British drink culture. I think the very reserved (relatively speaking) nature of British people, some might say uptight, means many can't have fun unless their consciousness is altered chemically. I'm a lot more reserved and uptight than I'd like to be but the solution for me will never be drink or drugs. That's a cop out. In Africa many people don't drink alcohol at all but merriment and dancing is plentiful, even in church!

what a way to go!

rockshandy · 28/05/2018 13:58

People really should try not to comment on subjects they obviously know nothing about.

Did drugs bless you with mind alterations that enabled you to telepathically tell from my post how much I know about drugs?

Thought not. How presumptuous of you.

This thread is an echo chamber that is becoming a bit like pointing out that Jesus isn't real, so I will just bow out now.

Clearly all you special people know ALL about this, and anyone who disagrees doesn't. Confused

Eolian · 28/05/2018 14:00

Of course many of them do it because they find it fun (or because of peer pressure or to self medicate). I wouldn't think all drug takers have mental health problems (not when they start, at least), but I would still assume their judgment and boundaries were pretty crap - which is pretty normal for a teenager, but not an adult. Alcohol is almost as bad, but at least it's regulated, the effects are predictable and well-known, and it is not illegal.

randomer2 · 28/05/2018 14:00

I took them. Was awesome Grin

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 28/05/2018 14:02

of course they are fun....:D

(just spent Sat nite snorting lines of coke, drinking gin, smoking spliffs and listening to Lee Scratch Perry...with 2 capable, professional friends)

As Lee Scratch Perry sang so memorably ''dink your dink, drink your drink...but don't drink and drive oh no no'

jamoncrumpets · 28/05/2018 14:03

I will, v rarely, smoke a tiny joint. Because yes, it's fun.

BananaToffo · 28/05/2018 14:03

Er...rockshandy That's a bit rich. You chose to speak on behalf of the entire human race and proclaim that "drugs aren't really fun, it's just a societal construct" but then you get sniffy when someone assumes (with justification) that you've never taken them yourself.

But why flounce off. Stay and get educated so that you don't make the same mistake again.

nursy1 · 28/05/2018 14:04

Yes it’s fun when you are young, single and childless. Not so much when you have other responsibilities.
I hung out with a group of daily drug takers when I was travelling many years ago. It was fun but I noticed after a while that none of them were very successful at holding down a decent job and to be honest, they were a bit boring. It was all about getting stoned or shooting up and watching cartoons. Day after day. I found I was drifting a bit, running out of the money I had saved and demotivated about looking for work. So I stopped and moved on to a different group of friends.

nursy1 · 28/05/2018 14:06

And yes, I have occasionally smoked a joust in my adult life. I don’t buy it or seek it out but I don’t say no. It it fun, occasionally

robotcartrainhat · 28/05/2018 14:06

did anyone watch that 'Drugs Live' thing on tv a while back? The did a Mdma one and there was that guy who had been in the army who they gave some too....... he really was not having fun. He really hated it.

PinotMwah · 28/05/2018 14:07

rockshandy come off it -- you took it upon yourself to come on here and tell us that the reason millions of people take drugs is because society tells them they ought to enjoy it.

A few people who clearly had more experience of this than you called you on it and you stormed off in a huff.

It's not about being more enlightened than others. Its about working out why people persist in taking illegal drugs despite the known risks to themself. Saying they only do so because of pressure from society doesn't stand up.

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 28/05/2018 14:15

rockshandy

“Did drugs bless you with mind alterations that enabled you to telepathically tell from my post how much I know about drugs?”

It’s pretty clear that you’ve not taken drugs, else you would of drawn on your own relevant, first hand experience in your original post, instead of referring to simply being with people who have taken them.

You don’t know if drugs are fun because you haven’t taken them and therefore cannot tell people who have that they are not fun —when they fucking are—

dejectedharry · 28/05/2018 14:16

I think society tells us to be ashamed of taking drugs. I think people that take drugs for fun are very open about what they're up to. I don't drink or do drugs so probably am 'boring' to be fair. I really enjoyed living and working in London until I was being pressured into feeling like I wasn't fun for not taking drugs or drinking.

I don't disapprove of their lifestyles I disapprove of them trying to force their lifestyles onto others. This is what I don't understand I choose my way, you choose yours, and that is okay. Don't make people feel bad for having different opinions on things and that works both ways.

LighthouseSouth · 28/05/2018 14:18

YANBU at all.

rockshandy · 28/05/2018 14:19

Stay and get educated so that you don't make the same mistake again.

Why is a view that disagrees automatically an indicator of a lack of education on the topic?

What mistake did I make? I gave my opinion. I didn't proclaim to be speaking for the entire human race...how odd to suggest that I was.

Those kind of responses are exactly what I am talking about. Are you all really suggesting that no one that has in the past taken drugs could now see through them for what they are? That is a bit of an overreach, no?

I have had my education, and I think that anyone who needs to take drugs to help them have fun has issues. Whether they know they have issues or not, as this thread clearly shows, is by the by.

I have seen the devastating effects of drugs often enough to know that any "fun" they might create is vastly outweighed by the risks of very real and very damaging side effects.

The problems being caused by over use of prescription medications are yet to hit fully, and when they do they will affect all of us, not just those who were over using them. They might not be the drugs you are referencing here, but another fallacy is this separation of drugs that is going on. There aren't good and bad drugs. All drugs have side effects, all drugs are damaging to us. Some more than others, and for some clearly the benefit outweighs the side effects. But no, drugs are not fun. And no amount of "education" on this thread will convince me otherwise.

Bowlofbabelfish · 28/05/2018 14:20

Addiction isnt about the substance though.

It’s very substance dependent. Crack, meth, opiates can create an actual physical dependency in a few uses. Alcohol dependency past a point can kill you if you stop suddenly. Nicotine is very addictive.

Some other substances are more to do with the habits around them, but some rally are capable of creating a physical dependency fast.

senioritabonita · 28/05/2018 14:21

I took a lot of drugs and it was a lot of fun. I never got addicted to anything and sometimes want to do it now. But I don't because I wouldn't want to have to buy them.

rockshandy · 28/05/2018 14:22

Saying they only do so because of pressure from society doesn't stand up.

Neither does saying they only do it because it is fun, so I am not sure what your point is.

Vitalogy · 28/05/2018 14:23

They don't make drugs illegal to protect us, it's to protect the system.
