WIBU - Chickenpox

Would really like to hear your thoughts on this as I'm starting to doubt myself.

Baby has chickenpox but he's not coughing or sneezing. We just nipped into the supermarket to buy bread and milk, we were in there for about 5 minutes. He didn't splutter, dribble, cough, sneeze or even babble for the duration and was also covered by a Snoozeshade (www.<a class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/SnoozeShade-Original-Universal-Sunshade-blocks/dp/B0039NQ3TW).?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-am-i-being-unreasonable-3260920-WIBU-Chickenpox" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">amazon.co.uk/SnoozeShade-Original-Universal-Sunshade-blocks/dp/B0039NQ3TW). WIBU to take him in the shop under these conditions?

OP posts:

Sorry you had such a hard time, OP. I know loads of people that would nip to a shop with a kid with CP under a raincover.

Peterrabbitscarrots · 27/05/2018 22:24

Why are there so many posts about chickenpox and other contagious diseases today?

Bigkingdom · 27/05/2018 22:28

Well i hope you don’t live near me. I’m sick to death of coming into contact with selfish parents and their chicken pox infected offspring. I’m pregnant, me, my partner and my 2 year old have managed to avoid catching it so far, no thanks to people like you!

Tinysarah1985 · 27/05/2018 22:35

We had one lady bring her child who
Was in the contagious stage into work- which is a Doctors surgery! It was a member of staff who really should have known better. And she proceeded to let him play with the toys in the waiting room 🤢

You'll get a pasting op. And I understand why as for some people, cp can be disastrous. Now you know that, you can make adjustments such as shopping online or asking friends to run errands. Popping quickly into the supermarket to pick up some supplies one time doesn't deserve you being slated though, as pp's have said, your dc was likely contagious and in contact with more people before you were aware of symptoms. Some things do have to go on (you can't keep an older dc off school because the younger one has cp) & thankfully for most people, cp is a minor illness. Anyone concerned should lobby for immunisation policy and education of the risks rather than piling in on one poster imo.

All these chicken pox stories remind me of a story about me having it as a kid, must have been about 6. I was off school and had been given strict instructions not to go near the garden gate so I "didnt give it to anyone else". 5 minutes later I was found stood near the gate, eagerly looking down the road for people. I was told off and apparently when asked why I had done the opposite of what I had been told I said "if i dont give it to someone else, how else am I going to get rid of it" Grin

Sorry derail there...I wish they would vaccinate as standard. Even if the chicken pox infection as a child isnt particularly serious (and I know sometimes it can be), you only have to see one person suffer shingles to think thats reason enough to prevent infection with varicella.

Tiredtomybones · 27/05/2018 23:10

We had a similar experience to a pp, 111 sent us to the walk in centre. I left DS in the car and went in to book him in. I told the receptionist and she said just bring him in. I sat in the corner with him and mentioned it to a nurse when she walked past and she was unconcerned, the hcps didn't seem to see us being amongst the wider public as an issue. I was so worried I felt sick. DS really needed treatment for a secondary infection so we had to be there but the whole experience was truly awful.

Tinysarah1985 · 27/05/2018 23:25

At the surgey when I work if they ask you to come in with suspected CP or any other highly contagius illness/infection then they get you to report to Reception on arrival, and we put them in a little side-room to (try snd) stop others gettinf infected. And they have to come at end of surgery too, so either 12:30 or 6pm.

LittleHearts · 28/05/2018 08:34

Lex234, that's so sweet! Smile

Beckywiththebadhair · 28/05/2018 14:43

OP I would have done the same as you and gone to the shop. I wouldn't have loitered and done a big shop just popped to get the essentials and left. It's all very well saying to stay home and get people to bring stuff to you but that isn't always practical.

I hope your LO is better soon.

ToPlanZ · 28/05/2018 15:08

Chicken pox can be really serious especially for adults who have never had it, but also the immuno suppressed and indeed can be serious in children, it is routinely vaccinated against in some countries. I would probably have had the shopping delivered to avoid making someone else sick. I'm actually having the inoculation next month because I've found myself in various situations where someone has blithely announced their DC has chickenpox and then I have to worry if I will succumb. If you or your child has something contagious just do a bit of research before going out in public.

Gilead · 28/05/2018 15:13

Aww, Mumsnetters make such a big deal out of the fact that it could kill me and others like me!
And yes, people walk about every day with god knows what, but if you're aware surely the decent thing to do is to minimise the risk for others? Would you say the same with Diptheria or Typhoid?

UmmMeToo · 28/05/2018 18:34

I read that one of the reasons they don't routinely vaccinate against cp is because there will then eventually be less cp going around and those that were never vaccinated as a baby, would have less chance of coming into contact with it whilst young. Therefore there could be a chance that they get it instead as an adult and this is more dangerous.

Tit4TatandAllThat · 28/05/2018 19:34

So let's sacrifice the young for the elders eh Hmm

Or here's a thought we could eradicate it through vaccination like polio.

NukaColaGirl · 28/05/2018 19:39

Single Mum here with 3DC. Toddler had it. Still had to get the other 2DC to school and back every day. No family, no friends to do the school run. Toddler went in the sling on my front. Did online food shopping. FaceTimed into my classes.

School would not have appreciated me keeping my eldest 2 off school for 10 days due to my toddler being ill.
