WIBU - Chickenpox

HalloBrother · 27/05/2018 18:21

Would really like to hear your thoughts on this as I'm starting to doubt myself.

Baby has chickenpox but he's not coughing or sneezing. We just nipped into the supermarket to buy bread and milk, we were in there for about 5 minutes. He didn't splutter, dribble, cough, sneeze or even babble for the duration and was also covered by a Snoozeshade (www.<a class="break-all" href="https://amazon.co.uk/SnoozeShade-Original-Universal-Sunshade-blocks/dp/B0039NQ3TW).?tag=mumsnet&ascsubtag=mnforum-am-i-being-unreasonable-3260920-WIBU-Chickenpox" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">amazon.co.uk/SnoozeShade-Original-Universal-Sunshade-blocks/dp/B0039NQ3TW). WIBU to take him in the shop under these conditions?

I think you’re getting harsh responses here op considering I’ve seen suggestions on here of putting the rain cover on a poxy baby in order to drop older children to school Hmm

Of course it’s not ideal but if baby needed milk and no one else is able to help that’s an essential so I would do the same

GinIsIn · 27/05/2018 20:21

My mother was hospitalised after catching chicken pox as an adult. It’s not just some standard childhood thing. Please don’t be so selfish and put people at risk!!

SameTerfDifferentUserName · 27/05/2018 20:24

YABU

LloydColeandtheCoconuts · 27/05/2018 20:24

Do you have anyone to help you OP? Get family or friends to do this for you next time.

heyday · 27/05/2018 20:25

Crikey, I bet you wish you'd never asked!!!!

athingthateveryoneneeds · 27/05/2018 20:25

Keeping ill people isolated is just the done thing, surely. Quarantine is a proven way to reduce the spread of infection.

My dd came down with CP when we were on holiday - we went home early and stayed there until she was better!

YorkieDorkie · 27/05/2018 20:26

YABVVVU.

Humbugington · 27/05/2018 20:26

Serious question, what am i supposed to do if my child gets chickenpox and i need an essential from the shops as a single mum with no family or friends for 60 miles?

lunar1 · 27/05/2018 20:26

What part of this do you think is ok?

Wolfiefan · 27/05/2018 20:28

Home delivery.
Very little is really essential.
Most people have someone.

Booboobooboo84 · 27/05/2018 20:31

Yabvu there are home delivery services. Ina. Lot of areas there are delivery drivers who will collect from newsagents for you.

Personally don't understand the attack on you.

When my son has it nhs 111 sent us to a walk in clinic to sit along everyone. Even the hospital staff didn't care he was in a room full of ill people. Even with constant telling them.

Just stay indoors from now on. It can be horrible but unfortunately it's the rules to stay indoors.

I'd remove the post as all your going to get is a good old mn bashing.

LassoOfTruth · 27/05/2018 20:39

Far from ideal thing to do but ffs you're getting harsh responses here! I would say that, just as we should avoid spreading any illness around of course, on the other hand if you have a compromised immune system the onus is on you as well to avoid environments which might be especially risky for picking up germs or infections. Other people are not responsible for your health.

Nanny0gg · 27/05/2018 20:42

Didn't you try and sit apart? You can't legislate for stupid - as is evidenced by so many of these threads.

My Drs made you sit in a room on your own till you were seen.

MumUndone · 27/05/2018 20:52

The thing is, it is a childhood illness though. If the government thought it was necessary, it would be part of the state funded immunisation programme. At any one time there will be loads of kids and adults walking around with contagious illnesses. It's always made into such a big deal on MN, and I do understand why, but in real-life people do take their children to the shops when they have chicken pox because it's not regarded as a serious illness.

Fatted · 27/05/2018 21:03

Considering that it's highly contagious for a few days prior to coming out in any spots, you can unknowing take your children anywhere and still infect people. My kids both currently have chicken pox. I sent DS2 into nursery the day before he came out in the spots and then we went for a lovely afternoon around the local shopping centre. DS1 went to school and then came out in spots that night. So they both have probably unknowingly spread it around.

dancinfeet · 27/05/2018 21:04

If you have someone else that could have popped to the shop for you, then YWBU. If you were in the same situation I was with my youngest when she had chicken pox - single parent, no family living nearby, EX H refused to help, no friends I could ask to run errands on my behalf, another child who still needed to get to and from school as too young to take herself, but not ill so no reason to keep eldest home from school - then YWNBU. I went out only when necessary, kept infectious child in buggy with rain cover down, but it just was not possible to keep myself completely house bound.

Tit4TatandAllThat · 27/05/2018 21:09

Why isn't CP immunised against? I had both dc done. Luckily as dd1 friend at school has just come down with it, received a text about 2 hours after we saw her.

glenthebattleostrich · 27/05/2018 21:42

Humbuggin, there's Amazon prime now. My FIL drove 100 miles to drop off shopping when my DD had it.

Pipp91 · 27/05/2018 21:50

Yes we did but surely they should have seperated us as we would have been in close proximity to others still. Just like the above shopping trip. If drs can't be bothered to prevent it. Then I don't see how one little trip to the shop with a cover on is any different.

Yes it was silly (and everyone is responsible for their own actions etc). But so Were many many drs and hospital staff etc. So why are people being so harsh to op.

hibbledibble · 27/05/2018 22:00

This is why I have had my children vaccinated against chicken pox. People like the op mean they could be exposed to it on a supermarket trip.

UmmMeToo · 27/05/2018 22:10

Of your baby needed milk or nappies or something urgent then needs must, if there is no one else that can get these for you. It's contagious a few days before the spots show up anyway, so unfortunately there is always a risk for anyone imunnosuppressed. And I am imunnosuppressed with 2 children currently with chicken pox.

overduemamma · 27/05/2018 22:12

Oh Jesus Christ.. taking a child out with chicken pox... oh no. What if the OP is on her own and had no choice? People walk about everyday with god knows what! Some people! X

Wolfiefan · 27/05/2018 22:19

God knows what?
The OP knew what.
My son had a kidney condition. Because of his medication chicken pox could kill him. Should he stay indoors forever?
