Oh God. I'm heavily pregnant and due to go in for an induction this Friday. I've just spent a good solid 3 days of my mat leave prepping meals and putting them in the freezer to try and make post baby life a bit easier. I made 59 portions of food and was really pleased that we'd be set for a good few weeks.

And tonight I discover that my stupid idiot husband has switched the freezer off since Thursday afternoon and all the meals are ruined. All of them.

AIBU to want to kill him. I'm soooooo furious.

Maybe lock him in the freezer?

Kursk · 26/05/2018 18:54

That’s 48 hours, it will all be fine, even if it’s defrosted it will be ok. It won’t be warmer than the fridge in there.

CrispbuttyNo1 · 26/05/2018 18:56

A really good tip to use is freeze a glass or plastic bag of water, once it is frozen put a penny on the top of the ice, place in freezer. If you go away and have a power cut, or in the OPs case, turn it off by mistake. If the penny is a the bottom of the bag, you know it did fully defrost. Even if power has come back on and refrozen everything.

SandyY2K · 26/05/2018 18:56

I admire how well organised. Good luck with your labour and hope it's not too long or painful.

dailymailsucksbigtime · 26/05/2018 19:03

You will have insurance- doesn't affect premium. Claim on it.

VanGoghsDog · 26/05/2018 19:04

You can't insure against turning your freezer off!

GinnyWreckin · 26/05/2018 19:17

I was in hospital for 10 days after a failed induction, failed ventouse and crash section delivery. I was overdue and had made a month of meals and frozen them.

When I eventually got out and home, I found my DH had eaten every meal I had made.. every single one in ten days... he says he was hungry...

For that I made him meal plan, shop, and cook healthy dinners for the next year, and three times a week after that.

Hope your induction and birth goes well! I also think that the meals on the bottom are ok, but like the idea of your DH being the taster.

Snipples · 26/05/2018 19:21

Omg Ginny you win! What a git! And sorry you had such a rough time giving birth.

Change where the plug is

GreyGardens88 · 26/05/2018 19:36

"Anything with rice in it that is not rock solid should be binned - rice is notorious for food poisoning and that's the Last thing you need is food poisoning with new baby."

Isn't this a myth?

unicorn56 · 26/05/2018 19:40

If it's thawed then you can't refreeze it, you can still eat it though, but within 3 ish days. If it's not thawed you can refreeze it.

VanGoghsDog · 26/05/2018 19:41

Grey - it's a half truth.

Rice is the worst for food poisoning (well, probably second to shell fish) but it's how quickly it is cooled after cooking that is the issue, not how well frozen or defrosted it is.

Tinkobell · 26/05/2018 19:42

Make him try the dodgy frozen meals 1 hr before you .....no trots you're good! He can be your human canary! 😁

Jux · 26/05/2018 20:22

One year, back in the 60s, when there was a good foot of snow (it went over the tops of our wellies) we were staying with my aunt over Christmas. She had married a man very much moneyed, so food was good - smoked salmon v expensive back then, not found easily), grouse, partridge, massive turkey, bacon, sausages etc, all in the freezer.

Well, my aunt thought she'd save some money as it was so cold and though the house benefitted from an early sort of central heating, she'd turned it off to save money of course. So, freezing outside and fucking very cold inside, she turned the freezer and the fridge off.

Result? No Christmas food for the 7 adults and 15 children. Baked beans all the way! Grin

Ah the good old chest freezer. great for storing bodies of idiot husbands

I second using DH as a human canary, hopefully a lot is still salvageable. My DH was very proud of himself the first time he cleaned out our freezer. ' I got rid of everything past its bb date, there was loads in there' Er, that's the point of freezing it you great twit!! Confused

Stillme1 · 26/05/2018 21:40

DH should eat all the freezer food, meanwhile you have takeaways delivered from your favourite places. Even if he does not get the trots he will learn from this.

Fingers crossed for later this week

Daddystepdaddy · 26/05/2018 22:06

You say he didn't know it was plugged in where it was. If so, blaming him completely isn't very fair. Perhaps next time you should all be clear on where important things like freezers are plugged in.

frasier · 26/05/2018 22:09

Daddystepdaddy I see your point but a chest freezer in the study isn't exactly something you'd miss! I'd have looked to see where it was plugged in before unplugging anything.

VanGoghsDog · 26/05/2018 23:34

@BuffysFavouriteStake

Lol!
I have to rack my brains to try to remember what year I put things in the freezer!

pigeondujour · 27/05/2018 01:39

I'd say you (and your neighbours) will be a lot more pissed off when you burn the place down. Gobsmacked anyone's plugging a freezer into an extension.

Snipples · 27/05/2018 04:57

Daddy - he knew where the freezer was and that there was one set of plugs. He knew there was no magical power source other than the one he switched off - which he did without thinking. It's not like I sneaked a freezer full of meals into his study!

It was a classic mistake. He didn't do it maliciously but i was still annoyed as it was caused by him not thinking and has caused us to waste food and considerable time and effort.

Anyway - we've saved most of it I think so no lasting harm done.

On the plug point - I didn't know this. Neither did husband. The electronics co installed the freezer for us and saw me use the extension cable and never mentioned it either. We live abroad though so maybe they're not as aware of risks - who knows. We can switch the room around a bit and avoid that happening again.

chestylarue52 · 27/05/2018 16:17

Sounds like it was a mistake? Yes, unfortunate, but he didn’t do it on purpose.
