Oh God. I'm heavily pregnant and due to go in for an induction this Friday. I've just spent a good solid 3 days of my mat leave prepping meals and putting them in the freezer to try and make post baby life a bit easier. I made 59 portions of food and was really pleased that we'd be set for a good few weeks.

And tonight I discover that my stupid idiot husband has switched the freezer off since Thursday afternoon and all the meals are ruined. All of them.

AIBU to want to kill him. I'm soooooo furious.

Probably a good idea gamerchick if for no other reason than to make it harder for idiots like my husband to ruin their wives meal prepping.

(We haven't got a wall plug close enough unfortunately - but I'll bear that in mind in future)

As a side note you're not supposed to plug fridges and freezers into an extension cable. They should be plugged straight into the wall.
My immediate thoughts too! Why would anyone do that, no wonder he was unaware he was turning off the freezer.

waxy1 · 26/05/2018 18:26

Same ext. cable as some computer is not a clever way to power a freezer. Someone might switch it off, unintentionally.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 26/05/2018 18:28

Chuck it back in , it will be fine.

sexnotgender · 26/05/2018 18:30

I'd suggest popping him in the chest freezer as punishment.

Chewbecca · 26/05/2018 18:30

If it isn't salvageable, I'd be restocking from Cook.

Weedsnseeds1 · 26/05/2018 18:34

It'll be OK. That's only a couple of days switched off. Even if some is defrosting a bit, it'll still be below refrigeration temperature. Just turn it back on and don't open the door. Use fast freeze button if it has one.

gamerchick · 26/05/2018 18:37

I'm sure it's a fire hazard because those appliences are designed to be left on and extension cables aren't in case they get coiled and overheat or just overheating in general. Those reel extensions are exceptionally dangerous as they can't be used with wire left wrapped around the reel (although people do).

MumW · 26/05/2018 18:37

If it is a chest freezer and is packed fairly tightly, you maybe ok with most of the stuff and it'll only be the top layer that has started to thaw.
Because cold air sinks, opening the lid will cause a minimum of cold air loss.

Pain in the neck but supervise him going through and checking everything. Anything that is still solid will be fine. Repack as quickly as possible and turn on the boost switch if you have one.

I feel your pain as DH has managed to turn our freezer off a couple of times over the years too.

VanGoghsDog · 26/05/2018 18:38

As it's a chest freezer, the stuff on top may need to be discarded but stuff lower down will be OK.

I'd be beyond furious, I keep a load of home made meal portions as I work long hours, and they were really useful when I was ill.

MereDintofPandiculation · 26/05/2018 18:40

Anything with rice in it that is not rock solid should be binned Not necessarily - it's probably the equivalent of being in the fridge, and if you'd eat rice after 2 days in the fridge, then you might feel OK about it. But to eat tonight, not to re-freeze.

Topseyt · 26/05/2018 18:40

Well yes, I'd be angry.

However, that arrangement for powering a freezer is just madness. You should not power major appliances on multi-plug adapters like that. They draw too much power for that and could easily overload it, causing serious overheating. They need their own ring main power sockets.

Also, as you have discovered to your cost, it is too easy for it to be turned off accidentally.

If you can you need to get an electrician along to sort out a separate socket.

SaltyPeanut · 26/05/2018 18:40

Look on the bright side, if the meals are all ruined, putting them in the bin will free up space to hide the body.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 26/05/2018 18:45

As one who cooks and freezes I feel your pain
Hope your pg goes ok

AnnieAnoniMouser · 26/05/2018 18:46

YABU

...to not have killed him already.

Then again, there’s much mileage to be got from this!

Check yourself what seems frozen and what doesn’t. As pretty much everyone has said, it should be fine as it has been closed IF the food was all frozen by Thursday.

...and I also vouch for Cook, but I’d just get them as you need them later.

LeonoraFlorence · 26/05/2018 18:46

Oh no. Take aways are on your husband for the first few weeks Smile.

BalloonSlayer · 26/05/2018 18:47

I was told once that in the event of a power cut, if you keep your freezer shut the food should stay frozen for 48 hours.

BalloonSlayer · 26/05/2018 18:48

In fact when I just googled "power cut freezer" that's what came up Smile

CrispbuttyNo1 · 26/05/2018 18:48

If it was still pretty frozen I reckon it will be fine. If its veggie I would definately refreeze it. So long as it hasnt got above 3deg and been exposed to air, I would happily save it.

AfterSchoolWorry · 26/05/2018 18:48

I'd burst him.

PunxsutawneyHogwash · 26/05/2018 18:48

Go through it all and anything still solid put your name on it, anything heading to thaw put his name on.

BlueAnchor · 26/05/2018 18:51

😂😂😂😂SaltyPeanut

BlueAnchor · 26/05/2018 18:51

And delivered to your door!

AdoraBell · 26/05/2018 18:51

YY to him eating some of the meals first to make sure it’s okay.

I would be angry too. My DH once left the freezer door open when we went away for a long weekend. I sent him out with a shopping list.

Snipples · 26/05/2018 18:53

Thank you - you've all made me feel better and possibly saved his life.

I think a fair amount of it is salvageable. And he will be on cooking duty for the meals that weren't.

He's feeling rather sheepish at the moment. And has probably hidden all the knives/ will be sleeping with one eye open tonight!
