My grandparents and extended family all lived 4/5 hours away when I was a child, I can’t say I was ever aware of missing out on family relationships. For my DC one set of grandparents and 2 uncles are around an hour away and they see them every couple of months, quite close but DH family all around 7 hours away, little contact with them. I wouldn’t say the DC are bothered by it. So no, it would never occur to me to feel sorry for a child without grandparents or relatives!

My grandparents had all passed away by the time I was 19, I lost my mum when I was 24 and my DPs mum has not long left for this world. If we had kids now they would have two grandads and two step nanas. It makes me so so sad that our mum's won't be here to meet them as I know they looked forward to it so much. But our kids won't miss what they didn't have. Yes id be sad for them missing out on being spoilt rotten by their nans so I see where you're coming from, but lots of families don't have grandparents and they still grow up loved with happy childhoods so I wouldn't necessarily feel sorry for them.
