To ask why all the 'you may also be interested in' photos I see are of very light skinned humans (except Milton Keynes)?

It just felt very weird. Is there a reason or is it just me being oversensitive?

But the vast majority pf the UK is white. You might not see that if you live in London or another major city but thats just the truth.

Luglio · 28/05/2018 06:38

I can go for weeks without seeing a non-white person. The UK isn't actually that diverse.

Notmorewashing · 28/05/2018 06:39

Most of the main large pictures are usually of black women or families so I think you are being OTT.

KlutzyDraconequus · 28/05/2018 06:44

it could be like a poker game.. if everyone gets different ones..

I have baby, baby, baby, MK, baby, pregnant woman.

Four if a kind with one in the hole with Milton.
I'll raise you all 20 MN Biscuit and a Gin

I always notice black or Asian people because I rarely see them!

WelcomeToGilead · 28/05/2018 07:05

Yeah, the U.K. just is white basically. I didn’t gather this until I moved out of London!

Hassled · 28/05/2018 07:06

I had never noticed that this thing existed before - I had to actively go looking. But it's there and now I'll never not see it. What is it with Milton Keynes?

you don't have Milton Keynes... instant win rule applies.. lol.

(tho I have never been I understand it has a bad reputation so I think they're trying to fix it by advertising it. I know it's styled.after an American city and was one of only a few proper 'planned' cities in England)

Aridane · 28/05/2018 07:12

Mine has changed now and Imtoo have Denmark and Baby Xperia

MrsJamin · 28/05/2018 07:15

It's not just London... Where do you all live not to see any non-white people?! (source)

NotARegularPenguin · 28/05/2018 07:15

Why do I now have a sudden desire to find out what it’s like to live in Milton Keynes? Why would I care? Sod it, off to read it.

NotARegularPenguin · 28/05/2018 07:19

Right, I now want to move to Milton Keynes.

Walkerbean16 · 28/05/2018 08:05

thanks @buggered. i go directly to pages like aibu or chat so i dont see that section.

Tit4TatandAllThat · 28/05/2018 08:13

Me to Penguin and were in the process of leaving the UK!

Wonder if DH would mind the change in plans again 🤔

Tit4TatandAllThat · 28/05/2018 08:14

We're in the process of leaving not were leaving. Obviously it's not a done deal we're moving to MK fecking autocorrect

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 28/05/2018 08:15

4 baby pics (total of 5 babies), MK (of course) and ectopic pregnancy pic. Does that mean 4 of a kind or perhaps even 5?
But of course having MK is an instant disqualification. Grin
But to answer the OP all the people are very pale.

MaireadMacSweeney · 28/05/2018 08:19

MrsJamin that graph is just England and Wales - no Scotland or NI.

BigGreenOlives · 28/05/2018 08:19

Baby
Baby
Milton Keynes
Baby
Baby
Ectopic pregnancy

All the people are white. I have not been in a position to have another baby for 12 years, pictures of babies aren’t relevant.

Cwenthryth · 28/05/2018 08:21

No one wants to go to Milton Keynes. It’s just a lot of roundabouts.

So OP, your complaint is lack of diversity in Mumsnet’s thumbnail photos. I think that’s a fair enough comment. You’d be best off being a bit clearer about what your concerns are though if you want to start a discussion about lack of diverse representation on Mumsnet though Grin

ApplesTheHare · 28/05/2018 08:23

Thread title is hilarious but it's a good point. No diversity / representation at all in my thumbnails.

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 28/05/2018 08:36

Right, I now want to move to Milton Keynes.

The trouble with Milton Keynes is they hide everything behind bushes. The number of times I've been trying to get somewhere and driven straight through MK because it just looks like dual carriageways and roundabouts and I didn't realise I was in the town yet...

I think that whilst it's true that it's not that unusual population-wise, I've come to feel that it's better to show a representation of what's possible, rather than a representation of what's there - eg. If 80% of ipods sold are white, that doesn't mean that apple shouldn't put green ones in the adverts. Same with people - show a diverse group of pictures of babies, so people feel included, rather than highlighting that non-white is only 15% of the population by showing vast majority white babies.

trulybadlydeeply · 28/05/2018 08:43

I had never scrolled down far enough to pay attention to these before, so I had no idea what you were on about. However now I've seen them i absolutely agree with you. Aside from Milton Keynes they are also all baby/pregnancy related, and whilst it is undoubtedly a big focus of the site, that is not of interest to me any more, and certainly doesn't reflect the diverse topics and areas of interest available.

drearydeardre · 28/05/2018 08:44

why no older people, why no disabled people, why no middleaged people - or are they all represented by MK or Copenhagen Confused
Why does everything have to be 'diverse' - parts of your own life/family/neighbourhood may well not be 'diverse' enough.
Mrs Jamin - that graph is interesting and probably explains why those from the London area find it difficult to understand that large parts of England and Wales are not sufficiently 'diverse' for them.
