To be scared of this pain? :(

Can you reassure me please? I’m getting quite anxious about the pain I’m having in my head and it’s very unlike me.

This last week I have been experiencing a recurring and quite bad pain in my head. It’s a sudden throb that gets quite badly and is in the same place, it feels almost like a “crack” because it’s a sort of single line of acute pain in a particular area of my skull rather than a dull, all over or behind the eyes pain. It’s near and above my right temple.

I’ve never suffered from headaches or migraines before and I’m freaking out a bit. Can someone talk me down and tell me it’s normal? Can it just be sinus related as my little ones have blocked noses Confused

I’m 24, I’ve recently gone back to work from mat leave so have been looking at computer screens a lot, been off contraception for about a month. Just in case any of those could be caused.

I’ve tried to google but it’s bringing up some really scary things and I can’t keep reading them Blush

I appreciate you're worried but neither Google nor MN can diagnose you. If you're worried see your GP.

Luisa27 · 25/05/2018 19:06

Could it be the ‘muggy’ thundery weather? I’ve been having weird sharp headaches over the last week or so - unusually for me. I put it down to the heavy thundery weather.
Try to put it out of your mind and resolve to see medical advice if it hasn’t improved in a week or so Flowers

ScreamingValenta · 25/05/2018 19:07

I think you should see your GP if you are worried.

It sounds exactly like the pain I get during a migraine. You mention you have recently come off contraception - hormonal changes can trigger migraines, so this might be worth exploring.

Don't google this sort of thing if you can help it - there are thousands of causes of headaches, but google inevitably leads you to the most worrying ones.

I’m not going to be able to get ah appointment until Tuesday now, I’m just looking for a hit of reassurance in the meantime as I have never experienced something like this or the accompanying anxiety it is bringing me for some reason - I’m usually much more calm that this Confused Blush

Do painkillers relieve it at all, OP?

SilverDoe · 25/05/2018 19:10

Thank you for the replies that came in while I was writing that post, I already feel better :)

I think it may well be the hormones, I am feeling really unnaturally tetchy too and as I said these headaches have me in tears which is so unlike me.

When you say 'a crack' does that mean like someone's cracked you over the head with a bat, or like something cracking?

wowfudge · 25/05/2018 19:11

Ring NHS Direct. The more you worry, the worse it will get or seem.

ApolloandDaphne · 25/05/2018 19:12

I was at the GP recently for a horrible headache. Right side going down through my eye into my neck. I had just had a horrible cold and was also revising for exams and writing essays. I was diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia.

SilverDoe · 25/05/2018 19:12

Valenta I haven’t tried painkillers yet; they make me feel sick I usually only take them on my periods and I don’t have any in the house, may ask DH to go and get some

ApolloandDaphne · 25/05/2018 19:13

Also started in my skull and I had a tender spot under my hairline.

iklboo · 25/05/2018 19:14

When you say 'a crack' does that mean like someone's cracked you over the head with a bat, or like something cracking?

I think the OP means like running in a crack (line)?

My friend had something similar and it was neuralgia. She's got meds from the doctor for it.

SilverDoe · 25/05/2018 19:14

Gilead it’s hard to describe but yes I’d say it feels like someone has whacked me over the head with something minus the impact, because it’s such a strong pain that feels like it’s in a line, if that makes sense? Like there is a fault line in my skull that really hurts

OP posts:
SilverDoe · 25/05/2018 19:15

Just googling neuralgia now, thanks to the posters who mentioned it :)

You could try speaking to a pharmacist while you await your GP visit - they might be able to recommend pain relief that won't cause nausea. There are migraine-specific tablets you can buy.

InkSnail · 25/05/2018 19:16

Have you had a sight test recently?

ScreamingValenta · 25/05/2018 19:17

Like there is a fault line in my skull that really hurts

That's a really good description of the pain I get with migraine.

SilverDoe · 25/05/2018 19:17

Thanks Valenta I think I will talk to them I think you’re right.

I actually have never had a sight test since childhood and I am 25 this year, perhaps I should get that sorted!

Gilead · 25/05/2018 19:18

Silver, ring NHS Direct, they have a pathway that includes that sort of pain and will ensure you are checked over. That way you can stop worrying. Flowers

SilverDoe · 25/05/2018 19:19

Okay so maybe it is just a migraine! And it makes extra sense with the hormonal stuff.

Christ I was imagining a brain tumour and leaving my 2 year old and 6 month old motherless Confused such a drama queen 😅

I will still get it checked out though as it is persistent and has been going on all week. But I do feel so much better (although very silly Blush) now

OP posts:
SilverDoe · 25/05/2018 19:20

Thank you all for your kind worlds and for not treating my like a complete fool Flowers

If you use computers most of the day at work, you should be entitled to an employer-paid eye-test.

GrannyGrissle · 25/05/2018 19:23

Only time i hade unbearable headaches was when i had Encephalitis (having been misdiagnoseed by 4 different Drs). I also had classic Meningitis syndromes. Ended up projectile vomititing repeateldly and unable to spaeak and almost died. Please get someone to keep an eye on you. Flowers

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 25/05/2018 19:23

Would deffo have sight test and see your GP.
I remember having absolute sudden crashing pain... Never experienced anything like it previously.... The medics thought I may have a haemorrhage... So they admitted me for 4 days.... Yup was sinus related....
