Ethics regarding Instamums and huns

BurberryIsSo2000 · 24/05/2018 17:14

Homeisthecalm here, I think it's suitable to start a new ethics thread.

Since clearly, the one from yesterday isn't really about ethics but Clemmie.

Thanks all,

Keep it as nice or as stingy as you like Grin

I'll start off by saying things should be clearly marked 'ad' or 'gifted'

Although the term gifted gives me the rage

If they algorithm endlessly into your bloody feed, that will probably be because IG will take into consideration the feeds that you usually watch and follow or comment on and show you similar ones that it thinks you might be interested in.
So if you show an interest in like minded accounts, that's what you''ll get shown more of. It won't differentiate whether you're a lover watcher or a hater watcher, it'll just know that that's what you seem to like.

CadyHeron · 30/05/2018 18:07

I don't think I agree with a license actually. Even though of course things should be noted as ad etc.
I think it'd penalise smaller accounts just trying to get by and make a living, as you say it'd only be huge making money ones who would be able to take the hit.

Boredandtired · 30/05/2018 18:09

@cadyheron I don't think that's true. I was amused recently, that for some reason my entire 'explore' page was full of rupaul and various drag accounts! I'm not sure if this was related to instadad and his cross dressing but it was a whole new side of Instagram...

Finks, I just googled who in UAE is charging for the license, it's their National Media Council. It says 'Under the new regulations, those using social media to promote brands and businesses for cash will also need to get a media licence issued by the NMC'

Fivelittleduckies · 30/05/2018 18:12

Do promoters have to claim on every sponsored post? I get so confused at how this part of it all works. And our of curiosity-how much does a sponsored post pay? It’s such an intriguing area I think that up until recently has been very hidden from our view as ‘followers’

Fivelittleduckies · 30/05/2018 18:13

Claim *tax that is ☝️

sparklefluff · 30/05/2018 18:19

It's quite simple for me.

If I am following an account who are about clothes/fashion/interiors etc, it's because I'm interested in this genre and therefore may look to purchase similar items and gain inspiration.

The Parent blogs, that then start selling me stuff, aren't why I followed them in the first place. It's disingenuous and it's cashing in on popularity. If you're going to do that? Cool, rebrand yourself and be transparent then.

CadyHeron · 30/05/2018 18:20

Saint Clemmie? Then you (general you) wonder why they feel under attack with oh so witty digs like that that have nothing to do with ethic discussions.

And our of curiosity-how much does a sponsored post pay?

That'd depend on how big your reach is, engagement and follower wise, surely. Bigger ones would command bigger fees for a sponsored post than smaller ones.

nipersvest · 30/05/2018 18:22

Cady, I think it depends if that license offers anything in return or if it's just a slice of pie. If it's like being part of a professional body and allows access to advice, support and perhaps some consumer protection, then I can see a point.

Readingchair · 30/05/2018 18:23

Cady I don't wonder why they feel under attack.

CadyHeron · 30/05/2018 18:24

Parent blogs selling stuff - if they mark any posts as an ad, I don't have a problem with that. It is transparent if they say it's an ad.
Remarket themselves in what way? Genuine question. If they are a parenting blog, and for example they got children's clothes to review or feature on their Insta feed, they're still a parenting feed. There's nothing to rebrand. They haven't changed. If they say #ad, there isn't a problem.
You don't have to follow them if you feel some you follow have started to advertise too much.

MarshaBradyo · 30/05/2018 18:25

If you’re getting accounts like this as suggested, do what I do and follow other stuff entirely. You’ll appreciate it : )

CadyHeron · 30/05/2018 18:26

That should read "there's nothing to rebrand" not "thereshing" Hmm

Readingchair · 30/05/2018 18:27

I've read Finks great MLM explanation on several threads. The ethics of using children to make money has been discussed at length. The ethics of #spon #ad # gift #aff transparency was great and changed some of the accounts.

I'm here for the news. And excited for opening night for MOD. My popcorn is ready.

sparklefluff · 30/05/2018 18:30

Cady, you have once again missed the point. Or should I say, chosen to ignore it.

Fivelittleduckies · 30/05/2018 18:31

Not sure if anyone here follows BabyBoyBakery ? but she just did a blog post on how she chooses brands to work with and i felt that was very honest and informative. I like that she opened up a dialogue about it. She has recently received some criticism on a brand she’d promoted and I felt her to be very receptive to people’s input but also held her ground and explained her position. I guess at the end of the day it’s about developing a mutual respect with your followers - not making anyone feel ‘used’ as such and being clear on how you work so that people know how sincere you are being with what you promote

CadyHeron · 30/05/2018 18:34

I haven't chosen to ignore it, I answered you. It might not have been an answer you liked, but it was a genuine one.
What do they rebrand as? They're still a parenting account regardless of whether they decide to try and make a bit of money from it.
Some will try and make a bit of income, some will not.
If you feel that they are becoming too monetised, and not for you anymore, why would you watch or follow them?
Genuine question what do they rebrand as, btw. As they haven't changed in regards to their genre.

Fivelittleduckies · 30/05/2018 18:35

That’s the thing - I know you are making a joke @readinngchair but your commentary reflects exactly the kind of bullying that goes on here. You are only here to make snide remarks about mod and fod. Why? How shallow and sad.

CadyHeron · 30/05/2018 18:37

Exactly duckies - it's always like that on these threads. It doesn't matter what you're discussing, it's always dragged back to MODFOD watch/slag off.
And not by me lol

Sofialemon · 30/05/2018 18:46

There would have been far less threads if there was a ban on naming or referring to specific instagrammers.

The posters on here who do it will never admit it but imo they only follow certain "instsmuns" so they can monitor them to then post on here about them. It's all a bit pathetic.

Boredandtired · 30/05/2018 18:47

@fivelittleduckies yes I follow her and have since before Ryan died. I'd always really liked the account but just recently was thinking about unfollowing. Then she posted that she was going to be doing that so I thought that was a really good step. She's always managed her account really well and comments to so it is possible to not just have weird 'we love you' followers and decent content.

SpongeBobGrannyPants · 30/05/2018 18:48

Seen as this thread is about ethics and instamums, does anyone follow either of the Meldrum accounts? They've been heavily plugging Nielson (sp?) holidays recently but haven't noticed any #ad markers on their posts. They're just back from a Nielson resort in Italy and away to another in Greece this weekend (eldest child getting pulled out of school twice in the space of a month, but that's another issue). They (particularly Mrs Meldrum) have a heavy fan girl following though so it seems to go unchallenged and I'm sure would be met by a barrage of abuse if you did. It seems suspicious if they aren't getting paid by Nielson that they mention and tag them so often though.

SpongeBobGrannyPants · 30/05/2018 18:51

Sorry, it's Neilson holidays.

CadyHeron · 30/05/2018 18:53

Quite, sofia. Going back to privacy and human behaviour and the whole wide interesting discussion! When I mentioned to teen ds the other day that I had a couple of new followers on IG of his classmates (as I mentioned earlier on in the thread) he rolled his eyes and said they sometimes screenshot and do a FB thread if they see something funny I've posted (that'd be a random garden flower or something then Grin )it totally reminded me of on here.
So very high school. Exact same scenario, people going to IG, running back over here, screenshotting, laughing, ..... exact same teen mindset.
