To want to move to a tenement flat in the West End of Glasgow when I'm 50?

I currently live in a nice house in the suburbs of London, with a big garden. DP is from Glasgow and wants to move back there in a few years when ds has left school. I absolutely love Glasgow and have no issue with the idea of moving there - we could get so much more for our money, for one thing.

I really really, really love the idea of a big tenement flat - high-ceilings, big windows, dining kitchen, in the West End. I'd like restaurants and pubs and shops and galleries etc on my doorstep - I think. I don't really want a naice house in the suburbs anymore but I may just be having a mid-life crisis Grin

But...AIBU to think this would be a good move? Will it all be student flats and noisy neighbours? Will I miss having a glass of wine in the back garden of a summer's evening and being able to park the car without a problem?

Would you go from suburban house and garden to city-centre flat in your 50s?

Nah, the West End is full of those 4x4 jeep wankers. Craiglang is where it's happening noo.

lamerde · 26/05/2018 21:23

@corcaithecat

Not everyone could afford Craiglang Wink

I mean, Boaby’s patter is worth a million bucks 😂😂😂😂😂

I love KB. He's your typical 'big daft boy' Grin

Ooh, yes, it would be fab! My SIL's flat is five minutes walk from Byres Road and across the road from the Botanic. Every time we visit her (we live in London) I get flat envy!

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 26/05/2018 21:34

The botanics are superb, and Ashton lane is good
Not jintys mind. Too fake oirish

Don't know the Rock Grin

Partial to a lunchtime Bloody Mary or two in Stravaigin, or a pint in the Chip... that probably marks me out as a tourist though Wink

Have we all convinced you to move up the road?

niceproblem · 26/05/2018 21:54

Don't think I needed too much convincing really Grin. I mean, I'd need some kind of job I suppose but apart from all that...it's a done deal!

Hotfootit · 26/05/2018 23:15

I’d don it in a heartbeat if I could. Get a main door flat if you can off Byres Road. You’ll love it.

Hotfootit · 26/05/2018 23:21

I have to leave this thread. It makes me want to go home. I am jealous of your dream OP.

caoraich · 26/05/2018 23:24

Do it!
We used to live in a main door flat in Hyndland. Now a bit further out as we needed somewhere bigger as starting a family and couldn't afford a whole house in Hyndland, but I do miss it! Main door was fab as not many steps and it came with it's own little patch of garden. Enough for a table and two chairs to sit out and drink gin on the odd day it isn't raining Grin

None of our neighbours were students. Mainly young professionals, retired people and some of the bigger flats had families. It was nice being an easy walk from Byres Rd but not quite as studenty an area as some of the streets round there are.

I spent a bloody fortune in Peckhams and that bookshop though Blush

Eggzandbacon · 26/05/2018 23:25

So I have spent decades staying in PILs flat in the west end just off Byers road.
Try and pick a non students block. I have literally never had a good nights sleep there especially on a weekend. Bloody security door at the front banging until 3-4am with them coming and going.
The general noise (police cars etc) also wakes me but they live v close to Byers road, think it would be better a bit further back.

UnnecessaryFennel · 27/05/2018 08:52

I want to go now! Sadly will have to wait a few years so I should probably stay off Rightmove for the time being, as it's giving me itchy feet.

Sounds as if it's a pretty resounding YANBU though Grin

UnnecessaryFennel · 27/05/2018 08:53

Haha name change fail...bloody app!

Mammalamb · 02/06/2018 22:24

Craiglang!!! Grin

ColouringPencils · 02/06/2018 22:39

Sounds fabulous!

I was just thinking today about selling our house when the kids leave home and moving back into a flat. Could buy a 3-bed flat, so we still had room for them to come and visit, and have enough left over to give each child a deposit for their own flat. In my little fantasy we were all living in the same city anyway, but obviously that probably won’t happen.

I do get sick of all the maintenance that comes with a house.
