To want to move to a tenement flat in the West End of Glasgow when I'm 50?

I currently live in a nice house in the suburbs of London, with a big garden. DP is from Glasgow and wants to move back there in a few years when ds has left school. I absolutely love Glasgow and have no issue with the idea of moving there - we could get so much more for our money, for one thing.

I really really, really love the idea of a big tenement flat - high-ceilings, big windows, dining kitchen, in the West End. I'd like restaurants and pubs and shops and galleries etc on my doorstep - I think. I don't really want a naice house in the suburbs anymore but I may just be having a mid-life crisis Grin

But...AIBU to think this would be a good move? Will it all be student flats and noisy neighbours? Will I miss having a glass of wine in the back garden of a summer's evening and being able to park the car without a problem?

Would you go from suburban house and garden to city-centre flat in your 50s?

I live in Hyndland and it's wonderful! You'll get a lot for your money coming from London!
I would always say west end over south side but i'm sure south siders will say different! I doubt you'll miss a garden too much with all the parks around!

SingingSands · 25/05/2018 00:14

@Mammalamb @amusedbush it was KB Wink

Pigsbum1978 · 25/05/2018 00:23

I live in a tenement on the Southside and love it! I wouldn't pay an extra £100,000 more to live in the westend.

I’ll meet you in the Chip for a drink in 2028! That’s when we hope to hear back. Moved from west end to village outside Glasgow when kids were born, missed my tenement flat, at the beginning I would drive back, sit in the Botanics and weep. But now kids are older, at school, have pals and Love where I am but one day...

KatieKittens · 25/05/2018 00:56

This is how much more you can get for your money in the southside

A house with a garden in leafy polokshields.

On that sort of budget I would be inclined to go for something like this over a flat. It’s still close enough to the whole Byers rd thing but less likely to be full of students (and noisy parties). You still get nice high ceilings and the whole Victorian vibe but with the added benefit of a house with a private garden space (albeit a smallish garden).

I’m a south side girl myself and have lived in a few different tenements over the years but would take a House like that over a tenement any day. Modern day issues in Glasgow tenements are poor insulation, subsidence, student flats, drafts, things living and dying inside the chimney shafts, and in some areas bedbugs and cockroaches are becoming a major issue. We also lived in one flat where someone would regularly take a shit in the close, couldn’t prove who it is was but had a good idea On street parking outside tenements can also be a huge problem, particularly in the west end. Realistically you have 8 households with space for 3 cars at a push.

With London capital you’ll get a nice property in g12. Imo west end better choice than South side
Hyndland and downhill are really great. Shops, vibe, near botanics,
Glasgow is a great city.walkable, safe and vibrant

Broomhill is very naice....... but it’s not THE West End.....

Mammalamb · 25/05/2018 12:51

Singing! Course it was! FB is a bit old now for that malarkey. I was at the same school as KB and everyone I know from home knows him (I don’t tho)

amusedbush · 25/05/2018 15:13

Mammalamb

You must have gone to school with my friend's husband. He was in KB's class and is mentioned by name in his autobiography Smile

Mammalamb · 25/05/2018 21:29

Amused! I’m a couple of years older! And at that age i would have ignored them as daft wee boys (of 13) while I was a wise, savvy woman of the world (age 15) lol

Jixy8731 · 25/05/2018 21:44

You should do it! Shared garden is less work as you get older and you might not even need a car. Talk to the neighbours though before you commit to somewhere though as that can be a big thing. If you fancy it then life is for living. I know several happy older people in tenements in Glasgow and Edinburgh, trying to get to know the folk in your stairwell will make a huge difference!

MissClareRemembers · 25/05/2018 21:53

Best thing ~ Botanical Gardens and Kelvingrove Park on your doorstep. Superb bars and restaurants. Great art and music scene. Subway and railway for quick transport ~ what more do you need?

DesignStatement · 25/05/2018 22:50

Know Glasgow well. Definitely the west end over the south side (better for museums, botanical, restaurants, bars, events and transport).

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 26/05/2018 19:14

KB nips aboot in G12 were he lives, folk leave him to
Apparently KB got banned from the rock which is admirable as it’s stuck up dump.rugger types

19lottie82 · 26/05/2018 19:21

The Rock is a total dump. I’m really surprised it hasn’t been demolished to make way for another block of flats yet.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 26/05/2018 19:23

The rock is a total howff, and up itself

DesignStatement · 26/05/2018 20:41

The Rock banned KB?
Can’t believe people still drink there after that!

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 26/05/2018 20:46

I know! Banned from rock, that is a serious badge of honour
Well, they might have been people in a previous life now they’re boorish twats

I once got papped out of clatty pats when I was a student, imagine the ignominy.

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 26/05/2018 20:49

I’m going to add an apparently to,this goss I’m repeating for 2reasons
1.was in the daily rangers and they make up shite

  1. In case KB has a litigious demeanour (doubt it though)
DesignStatement · 26/05/2018 21:09

Lipstick ~ I'm hoping it's true cos it would be funny. Need to do some checking 👀

LipstickHandbagCoffee · 26/05/2018 21:10

I hope it’s true too, banned from rock. That’s quite commendable
