To think being too cold is worse than being too hot

I'm that person who can't stand the air con or the windows open if it's not hot outside. I hate the breeze while I'm working and my hands get very cold easily.

But I always seem to work with people who want the Office about 16c. I usually grin and bare it but sometimes I'm so uncomfortable I can't work.

I'm not saying everyone should be sweating and boiling, but I feel being cold is worse than being a little warm. AIBU?

I hate being cold. I live in a rented flat with crappy storage heating and the winter months are hell. I'll take being too hot any day over that.

MistyMeena · 23/05/2018 14:41

I hate being cold, I can't think or concentrate at all. Putting an extra jumper on makes little difference. I always have cold hands and feet, even in summer. I'd much rather be too hot, although I moan about that too of course. 😀

NutellaFitzgerald · 23/05/2018 14:45

Offices need to be zoned, rather like zootropolis that has rainforest, frozen tundra, desert etc parts of the city so each animal can live in comfort.

I'm a run too cold but have lived in a tropical country without aircon too so have experienced both.

It's misery not being too hot or too cold but being unable to improve it. Telling a cold person to put another sweater on doesn't help if that fails to warm them up (And it does fail. I can wear three jumpers and still have icy fingers)

When living in a hot country I suffered from the heat but I could cool off by wetting my forearms and spraying water on my face.

Zoned offices is the way to go.

MissBax · 23/05/2018 15:04

I'm always too hot, but can't just get naked can I? You can put on more layers.

RussianBluee · 23/05/2018 15:07

I hope you dont sit by the window then because some people need it open and if youre sensitive to breeze you shouldsit further from windows

maxthemartian · 23/05/2018 15:39

Again, putting on layers doesn't really work. If the air temperature is too low then my core temperature drops and I can't generate enough heat for the layers to do anything.

RochelleGoyle · 23/05/2018 15:41

YABU in my opinion. You can always put on a jumper and jacket whereas uncomfortable heat cannot be so easily remedied in the workplace!

TheLastNigel · 23/05/2018 15:50

I'm always cold.
Fortunately for me I work in care settings which have almost always been roasting. Until my current office which is north facing and by an ill fitting outside door so an arctic wind whistles through.
I'm currently sitting at my desk in jeans, boots, a thick jumper and cotton scarf and fingerless gloves. I had to go outside at much to sit in my car and warm up (it's hot outside).
I also have arthritis and the cold at work is making me utterly miserable. My joints hurt and I can't concentrate.
I accept others feel the same about being hot but adding another layer doesnt help me at all!

LouiseCollins28 · 23/05/2018 15:50

@maxthemartian isn't "core temperature" tolerance tiny, like about 2 degrees c between normal and hypothermia?

If we are talking about an office workplace in the UK, it seems unlikely that anyone would be at risk of hypothermia if there was heating of some kind and they were appropriately clothed? Outside I'd guess hypothermia is possible but a worker would likely be active and wearing suitable clothes/PPE, no?

IrianOfW · 23/05/2018 15:52

If you are too cold you can put on layers. There is only so much you can take off if it's boiling hot!

ShatnersBassoon · 23/05/2018 15:52

I don't know really. I've don't remember ever being too hot. I'm the annoying cold person, but I wear a lot of layers to save other people having to strip off.

Katedotness1963 · 23/05/2018 15:55

I'd rather be too cold than too hot. You can always add extra layers if you're cold, there's only so much you can take off if it's hot! And being in a hot place without AC is miserable.

LemonysSnicket · 23/05/2018 15:57

I disagree. Too hot and I'll faint or throw up, too cold and I'll just shiver and be a misery.

BikeRunSki · 23/05/2018 15:59

I would far rather be too cold than too hot. Except when I was pregnant, when I was too cold the whole time, even at 8 months in August!

itallhappensforareason · 23/05/2018 16:01

I'd much rather be too cold than too warm. I love feeling "fresh" and having fresh air coming in. At least if you're cold you could put more layers on, which is easier and more appropriate to do than stripping off in the office!

EnterFunnyNameHere · 23/05/2018 16:01

We have a few "naturally cold" people in our office... It's a nightmare! If you're cold, wear a jumper/gloves etc. There's only so many layers I can get away with removing!

RedRedBluee · 23/05/2018 16:05

I prefer being cold than hot and I have raynauds
It’s easier to warm up than cool down

smileplease6 · 23/05/2018 18:42

I get what everyone is saying and wouldn't want anyone to be sweating and too hot on my account. But you're unlikely to have a situation where one person is shivering in a coat while another is in a vest and sweating are you?

I'm talking about the situations where it's about 14c outside and people are wearing long sleeves, trousers etc, so springtime. It's not 'hot' outside, but some people want the window open for a cool breeze. People like me feel the cold and find this very uncomfortable, while the hot people wouldn't burn up if the window was closed. They just like the breeze and cool air. It's a situation where those people want to feel cold, rather than wanting to cool down from hot weather.

TheGrassIsGreenerOnMySide · 23/05/2018 19:02

In that situation, you should swap desks Smile. Have them sit next to window and enjoy the fresh air while working and you sit on other side of office enjoying warmth.

megletthesecond · 23/05/2018 19:03

I'd love a zoned office. I could sit in the desert zone.
I'm basically like Garfield when he sits over the floor heating vent.

amusedbush · 23/05/2018 19:07

14 degrees is a glorious temperature and where I'm happiest Grin

I would much rather be too cold. Being too hot is awful as you can't get any relief from it and I get really angry and uncomfortable.

chestylarue52 · 23/05/2018 19:27

I like there to be air circulation, a stuffy office makes me feel really ill and tired.

Aragog · 23/05/2018 19:28

But that's also how some people with cold. And no, putting on extra layers won't help with my joint pain when it's cold!

Mousefunky · 23/05/2018 19:29

I prefer being cold. There’s a million ways to warm yourself up but very few to cool down and I hate feeling hot and sticky, it makes me agitated.

SadieHH · 23/05/2018 19:52

Much rather be too cold. After warning everyone how much I hate the heat I fainted at work a couple of weeks ago. Now they take me seriously!
