To think being too cold is worse than being too hot

I'm that person who can't stand the air con or the windows open if it's not hot outside. I hate the breeze while I'm working and my hands get very cold easily.

But I always seem to work with people who want the Office about 16c. I usually grin and bare it but sometimes I'm so uncomfortable I can't work.

I'm not saying everyone should be sweating and boiling, but I feel being cold is worse than being a little warm. AIBU?

I'd take being cold over being hot any day. I feel physically ill if I'm too hot; I feel faint and nauseous. And YY to the poster upthread who mentioned feeling claustrophobic. I love a bit of fresh air and a breeze.

DuchyDuke · 23/05/2018 13:32

Being too hot makes me faint, gives me the runs, and makes my brain fog worse. I love cool / cold weather.

steff13 · 23/05/2018 13:33

I'd rather be too cold than too hot. There are only so many clothes I can take off and remain decent, but I can put on lots layers of clothes to warm up.

megletthesecond · 23/05/2018 13:33

Yanbu.
16 isn't bearable even in layers. The air would be too cold for me sitting down.
I'm comfy when it's above 24.

MrsJayy · 23/05/2018 13:33

I hate being cold I have a chronic pain condition and the cold makes it worse and my whole body nips there is a fine line between cooling a room and it being too cold I also have a cardigan near by

OhSoTotallyLost · 23/05/2018 13:33

I hate being cold. I used to have a hot water bottle and blanket at work as other people wanted the window open in winter!

adaline · 23/05/2018 13:35

I'd much rather be cold as you can always put extra clothes on, use a hot water bottle or wrap yourself in a blanket.

If you're too hot, there's not much you can do about it. I also struggle to sleep when it's warm and sticky outside!

maxthemartian · 23/05/2018 13:36

I don't think that people who run hot grasp that for cold people, putting on layers can only do so much Sad

I start to feel comfortable at around 22 degrees. I stayed with friends over winter who run hot and had their place at around 16/17 and I really suffered.

Mannix · 23/05/2018 13:37

Personally I’d rather be too cold than too hot. Nothing worse than a warm, muggy office.

maxthemartian · 23/05/2018 13:37

Oh and I would never just wear a t-shirt in the office and then complain of cold. I always have plenty of warm clothing and layers.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 23/05/2018 13:37

I’m the opposite - for me, it is easier to put on extra layers if I am too cold, but I struggle if I am too hot.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 23/05/2018 13:38

No, I faint when I get too cold. Last time I fainted for that reason I caused quite a lot of damage.

StormyLovesOdd · 23/05/2018 13:44

I'm the opposite, I'd much rather be too cold than too warm, the heat makes me feel lethargic, headachey and sick.

I can always put another layer on but there's only so much I can take off without scaring people.

Cornettoninja · 23/05/2018 13:50

I seem to run 'normal' temperature but work with people at either end.

Whilst I do have sympathy for those with conditions such as Raynaud's, heat is definitely worse to deal with in terms of what an individual can do to make themselves more comfortable. Layers, heat pads, hot water bottles, hand warmers, hot drinks etc are all options if you're cold, stripping off generally isn't an option at work and a piddly little desk fan is likely to just blow warm stale air around.

Last winter was particularly bad for me at work. It was so hot I was on the verge of panic attacks sometimes just feeling like I couldn't breathe and then my sinuses started to be affected - it felt like I was breathing pure chlorine and was intensely painful during and after work due to the hot dry air.

i think the recommended room temperature is 19 degrees and I think most people can work with that as a neutral point.

No fucker needs to be messing with the thermostat to suit there personal preference. I'd take the dial off if I was in charge.

mirime · 23/05/2018 13:55

@BlooperReel

I prefer being cold, easier to warm up with layers etc. If it is too hot its harder to get any relief from it.

I think the problem is that for those of us who feel the cold layering up can only do so much, especially if you're stuck sat at a desk all day.

In the winter at work I'll have a couple of layers on, a hot water bottle, my coat over my legs and a wool poncho on, while drinking multiple hot drinks and I'll still be cold.

AnnabelleLecter · 23/05/2018 14:05

I'd rather be too hot. Yes it can get annoying but not soul destroying like being too cold is.
I'd happily hibernate or live somewhere warmer between Christmas and Easter.

Jozxyqk · 23/05/2018 14:08

Sorry, but YABU. Unless it's seriously cold, like unreasonable working conditions, cold is not as bad as hot. Put an extra layer on. I'm too cold most of the time - I wear long sleeves, jeans, socks & shoes in all but the warmest weather, & quite often a coat when many other people don't. I also have Raynauds. My hands & feet are frequently icy, even in summer, & my default sitting position is with my hands tucked under my knees. I wear gloves when outside unless it's summer. My DH is the opposite - he wears shorts & t-shirt from about March to October in a typical year, even outside. We currently have the window open, bedroom fan on each night, & I wear socks, pyjamas & sometimes an extra blanket over the duvet, while he sleeps with no duvet or pyjamas on at all. He can't take any more layers off but I can put them on.

BlooperReel · 23/05/2018 14:08

@mirime I do really feel the cold, I have a little heater under my desk that really helps, and keep an extra cardigan at work. But if I am too hot I find it really unbearable.

Aprilmightbemynewname · 23/05/2018 14:09

Once went to Brazil, felt like I was locked in an oven tbh.
When we lived in a cold farmhouse our oil ran out and we couldn't afford to get any, slept in clothes +fluffy dressing gown. Tiny ds wore a snowsuit +mitts /hat!! Hv would have so disapproved!!
Rather be cold for def!!

Glumglowworm · 23/05/2018 14:13

YABU

If you’re cold, you can put on extra layers. If you’re hot and already wearing thin clothes you can’t strip off anymore!

I work in an office that’s always far too hot and where only people who scammed one years ago have a medical condition are allowed fans. It’s fucking miserable from May to September!

FatBottomedGal · 23/05/2018 14:17

Completely agree!! I'd much rather be too hot than too cold. I used to work in an office which was air conditioned all year long and it drove me crazy - I'd travel in on South West Trains (boiling hot), then sit on the tube (absolutely sweltering) then get to work and have to put on tights and jumpers to sit in the freezing cold office and then remove it all again at home time.

I do get that people prefer different temperatures, doesn't mean we can't moan about it!

LouiseCollins28 · 23/05/2018 14:19

I agree with the folks saying that normally "too cold" is easier to do something about than "too hot."

I've had people in my office who want it like a sauna and that's dreadful and also experienced cold offices which can be unpleasant but at least layering up can help.

Our offices can be warm but weirdly can also be freezing, the building is so big that it can be radically different temps in different places, which is hard to deal with.

Hard when you dress for spring and summer and find that it's a much colder day than you expect and the aircon is still on full blast though, brrrrh!!

agentdaisy · 23/05/2018 14:27

I'd much rather be too cold than hot. There's nothing worse than being hot and sticky while stuck at work and there are limits to how many layers you can take off at work.

I get migraines which make sick if I'm too hot for too long and I've fainted a few times as well. I can't work if it's too hot as I can't concentrate because of a migraine or waiting for the migraine to hit.

It's a universal problem in shared work spaces as there will always be people who can't work in the heat and those who can't work in the cold. In an ideal world everyone would have their own temperature controlled workspace set to their ideal working temperature or separate workspaces for those who feel the cold and those who feel the heat.

IHeartKingThistle · 23/05/2018 14:32

Putting extra clothes on doesn't help me much, although thermals help. I feel the cold like a physical pain. I can't let myself get chilled as it takes hours and hours to warm up again. I'm better at managing it now. Under layers, not over layers!

Annoyingly, though, because I'm cold all the time and barely sweat, if I do get really hot I can't cope with that at all either!

Makegoodchoices · 23/05/2018 14:39

I’m always cold. However when pregnant I overheated and it was actually worse. I have not shared this new understanding with my colleagues though!
