To leave work on time?!!

509 replies

skyblueeee · 22/05/2018 19:27

I find working full time (9-5:30) quite hard, I feel tired and restricted, which is why I can't wait for the clock to strike 5:30 and I can walk out the office, drive home, eat dinner and relax....

But the problem is, no one ever leaves at 5:30 Confused I look around and everyone is still working while I walk out the door, I even get a few judgemental looks from colleagues. I'm usually the first one out, if not I'm one of the first.

Does it look bad to leave work on time? Obviously if I had something urgent to do I would finish it, but I don't want to stay just to look good. I already get home about 6:20pm depending on traffic and not keen to have an even longer day....

I’m absolutely desperate to know which company @CalF123 works for so I can make sure to boycott them

ForkIt · 24/05/2018 09:22

Depends on the job.
When I worked at Tesco they docked 15min pay for being more than 3 min late (clocking in was after you’d been to the lockers, been accosted etc and entered the floor so you had to be quite early to be 3min late). I laughed like a drain if asked to stay (you were only given overtly me if over 15min AND authorised, every month they tried not to authorise any and slip hours past you or whole OT shifts)

Teaching, it’s an accepted part of the job

TomRavenscroft · 24/05/2018 09:42

I think if you haven’t got the work done by then, you’re not working hard enough.
OR management are not managing workload well enough.

HettySunshine · 24/05/2018 09:54

I think Calf works for a fantasy company of her own creation. Senior manager my arse.

CalF123 · 24/05/2018 10:11

@HettySunshine

Nope, I've just finished supervising entry to the office this morning.

siwel123 · 24/05/2018 10:13

What company @Calf.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 24/05/2018 10:15

I’d totally buy that there are companies treating their employees like Cal’s. I’s the idea that anybody working in those companies thinks that the system is good that’s implausible. Usually everybody knows that the staff are being treated like shit.

HettySunshine · 24/05/2018 10:18

You can say whatever you like Calf. I know it's nonsense.

CalF123 · 24/05/2018 10:24

@RafalsTheKingOfClay

I think there are definitely refinements we can make to our policies- I'm not saying everything we do is perfect. But overall, the company has a very unique culture and I like to think the staff, not just the senior management, enjoy being part of that.

siwel123 · 24/05/2018 10:33

@Calf. Ignoring the questions being asked!
What company do you work for?

I'm willing to share mine if you do yours

ikeepaforkinmypurse · 24/05/2018 10:44

I want to know too! I can't tell you my exact company, I have bad-mouthed a few employees on this forum and it would create an atmosphere in real life, but I can tell you that I work in recruitment in Central London for blue-chips clients. There are quite a few of us Grin

Biggreygoose · 24/05/2018 10:47

CalF. What is stopping the implementation of working conditions similar to those described by captainbrickbeard and myself? And why would you not chose to have a working environment like that?

siwel123 · 24/05/2018 10:47

I work for the ministry of justice as a project manager Smile. Come on @Calf. If you don't think the company has done any wrong then surely you can name it at least?

MummyCuddlesSolveEverything · 24/05/2018 10:48

Calf supervise entry into the office, make sure that they can't leave, then sit on Mumsnet talking about making sure people work their full hours...great management there.

Trinity66 · 24/05/2018 10:52

I'm out the door 5:30 on the dot everyday

baxterboi · 24/05/2018 10:58

In the office I manage, the exit door is locked until 5.01pm when it is opened to allow staff to leave after they have completed their contracted hours. Me and the rest of the management team also closely monitor all staff at the end of the day to ensure there is no surreptitious 'packing up' or 'washing cups'.

You are contracted to work until 5.30pm, so you should be working up until that time(which you clearly can't be if you're leaving bang on that time). I'd also have concerns about your attitude and commitment to work if I saw you doing that.*

Wow your company sounds like a lovely place to work

Ollivander84 · 24/05/2018 11:09

My manager positively encourages us to pack up, he's leaving with us at 6.01pm!

Sparklesocks · 24/05/2018 11:21

Calf I bet your staff don't chip into your birthday cards Grin

Borisdaspide · 24/05/2018 11:25

I do know someone who got a lovely fat 'confidential' payout for working at a CalF type place when senior management messed around letting her go for medical appointments and other similar things.

FluffingtonPost · 24/05/2018 11:28

**The two hour response time is for non-emergency incidents. We aim to respond within 15 minutes to family emergencies. It's been known for an employee to raise a family emergency on the system at 9.30am, and for a member of senior management to have reviewed and authorised the request and then unlocked the door before 10am.

Ooh, only half an hour to respond to an employees ‘emergency’ request...how fucking generous!

I want to know what this (mythical) amazing place is so I can quit my fully flexible, amazingly supportive workplace, come and work for you the. Sue the fucking arse off you at a tribunal when you hold me prisoner in this dungeon!!

notacooldad · 24/05/2018 11:42

Surely if you are being paid until 5.00pm you are free to go at 5.00 and 1 second
Why are door locked until 5.01?

Weezol · 24/05/2018 11:51

In the past few days I have occasionally pondered posting an AIBU stating that water is indeed wet, just to see if CalF would turn up to argue the opposite.

CoteDAzur · 24/05/2018 12:05

You are a complete twat

IVflytrap · 24/05/2018 12:12

@Calf

So how are you planning in reprimanding yourself for wasting so many minutes posting on Mumsnet during the working day?

CalF123 · 24/05/2018 12:22

@IVflytrap

The senior management don't have a "working day".
