Dh weird ways with rubbish

breadsticker · 22/05/2018 13:12

My dh recycles like crazy. A good thing but we have no storage for rubbish and dh collects our average of 3 recycling bins and just chucks them in the garden until bin day. Super annoying. Now it’s summer there are 3 bin bags currently sitting in our tiny garden and flies everywhere.
Not to mention last week a fox ripped one open.
He says that because there’s ‘no food’ in the bags (he washes every recycling item) no animal would want to go near them. He is in denial about the sudden influx of flies round the bags.

Another thing he says is I shouldn’t vacuum up food from dinner because that’s disgusting. Am I weird in that?! I thought everyone vacuums up crumbs etc on their kitchen floors. Obviously if a huge lump of fish was on the floor I’d clean it up but general things like peas I’m good to go and roll over them with the dyson.
I empty the vacuum once a week.
Aibu to a. Get some kind of actual outdoor bin storage as dh says it’s really not necessary and
b. Keep up with the vacuuming after dc dinner else I apparently will be manually sweeping it up forever...
Feel so ridiculous typing this but I am beginning to question my ways and maybe even sanity!

a. YANBU

b. YABU (for reasons I can't really articulate because I do think it acceptable to vacuum up crumbs, but peas are a step too far...)

Roomba · 22/05/2018 15:15

I agree 100% with pippostrelle!

I would hoover dry crumbs up - no issues there. But anything that has any moisture in at any ie peas - no way. My ex used to do this and after a while the Dyson filter absolutely stank like vomit! Even after cleaning, every time the hoover was on it made the house smell of sick.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 22/05/2018 15:17

Do you not have recycling bin?

Hoovering up food is disgusting btw.

tealandteal · 22/05/2018 15:18

a. It clearly is necessary, ask him to open the bag after a week and take a deep breath, I am sure he will agree then.

b. I would have a quick sweep up of peas,, food etc rather than hoover but ddog eats it all here anyway.

Wildlingofthewest · 22/05/2018 15:23

If you are generating that much recycling then he needs to start taking it to your local tip rather than letting it sit in the garden. That’s just rank and if it’s already attracting flies then you will soon have rats. Even if he washes the rubbish there is still residue and food smells in it which is what attracts foxes.

Wildlingofthewest · 22/05/2018 15:24

Also - I too hoover up food bits off the floor, I empty and wash out the hoover cylinder weekly, doesn’t smell!!

NoNamesLeft86 · 22/05/2018 15:48

I don't understand how cleaned out recycling attracts flies? We don't have wheelie bins or anything here so our recycling is in bags but as it's clean it never gets smelly/flies or attracts any kind of animal? The black bin bags of non recycling is different and yes that would get gross and needs to be sealed in a bin or something.

I'm a bit confused, is it the cleaned recycling you say is attractive to flies?

NoNamesLeft86 · 22/05/2018 15:48

And yes hoovering things like peas is gross

robotcartrainhat · 22/05/2018 15:53

I hoover peas! not if there are loads of them obviously. But the odd one... and certainly food crumbs... never thought twice about it? Why is it yuck? they just go in the hoover bag same as theyd go in the bin liner.... then they go in the hoover bag into the bin liner outside... dont see what the issue is

I think YANBU about the hoovering seeing as it is you who are doing the cleaning.... how about suggesting to him that since he is so particular about how cleaning is done he should do it himself?

Curtainshopping · 22/05/2018 15:57

Is your recycling collected? What kind of bin do you have?

kezzy13 · 22/05/2018 16:09

I hoover food up frequently, just empty the hoover each time

Stephisaur · 22/05/2018 16:18

I hoover food bits up too. We have a Henry so they just go in the vacuum bag, very low maintenance.

Could you not get some kind of container for the garden to store the sacks in until recycling day?

breadsticker · 22/05/2018 19:04

Ok so I clean the filter and empty it out after it’s more a case of not going to be doing it manually. Although I haven’t realised other people don’t do it. My dyson doesn’t stink. It’s 5 years old but I posted to find out what others thought so fair enough.
I will have a look. Tip is only open when dh at work. Can’t see me doing that.
I think I shall try to get a bin I can put down the side of the house.

Re: vacuuming
I was trying to recall what I do, then the dog walked in and that answered that question!

NapQueen · 22/05/2018 20:03

Are you in the uk? Why isnt he putting the recycling into the blue bin? Also, is he flattening all the boxes/squishing down cans and plastic bottles etc?

How many of you are in the house? 3 refuse sacks full of recycling is a heck of a lot for two adults in a week.

OutingMyDog · 22/05/2018 20:06

I live in the UK and don't have a blue bin. We have see through bags for recycling.

Pastaagain78 · 22/05/2018 20:10

Can you buy a blue bin from the council?

Hoovering food is gross, sorry.

SalveGrumio · 22/05/2018 20:12

We have a green bin, not a blue one.

My hoovering tip is to leave it a while and then the peas dry out and are much easier to hoover!

breadsticker · 22/05/2018 20:13

@JustSeeingHowManyCharactersWeC perhaps that’s the way forward then! Not that we’d look after a dog if we can’t even manage our bins! We have one dc but it’s just that husband recycles everything.

We don’t have a blue bin. I don’t know what that is. We have no special bins just the rubbish collection. If we put it in a pink bag it’s deemed recycling. I do think he could possibly squash the recycling down a bit more to reduce the number of bags, it’s because the indoor bin it’s kept in is narrow so we end up wasting space in the bag once it’s taken out. We don’t have room indoors for a bigger bin.

OP posts:
MsHomeSlice · 22/05/2018 20:21

the recycling obviously is NOT clean if it's attracting flies

I am very lazy and pile mine up on a kitchen chair that no one sits on and take it out every day or so once a week

Card is flattened and shoved inside other bits russian doll stylee
Tins are dishwashed
Milk cartons are rinsed and squashed...they tend to go out every day actually, I have a very sensitive off milk sense of smell
glass also dishwashed
ditto any plastic stuff, meal containers, but we really do not use a lot of that sort of stuff.

Cannot comment on the food hoovering, also was pondering what I had to do, until I realised, like a PP we have always had dogs, no pea is allowed to sit alone and neglected under the table when you have two GSDs and a labrador. :o

Candlelight123 · 22/05/2018 20:33

The gathering of recycling in the garden sounds awful. I have probably Hoovered a pea up rather than bending down for it Hmm

halcyondays · 22/05/2018 20:35

I would blame your local council for not providing a proper wheelie bin for recycling, not your dh.

Can't you buy a large bin/storage box for the garden?

OutingMyDog · 23/05/2018 20:45

We don't live in a flat and have loads of outdoor room. We still get bags for rubbish and paper or plastic recycling. Some areas just don't have wheelie bins yet.
